No matter how many times I try, I just can't play a straight up normal traditional 2-hander or sword 'n board fighter. I always end up using a dex based build or MC'ing to Rogue or splashing an arcane magic class into for some flair. I had no problem playing Barb or Warlord so it's not like I have an issue with thematically strength based characters or straight up bruisers.

It is difficult to play a certain kind of fighter if I play one. Its usually based on background story. So if my fighter is a blacksmith, he is a weaponmaster. If a peasent, then he is proficient in exotic weapon like kama - two weapons.
Only time I can make a standard fighter - sword 'n board, is when I define my fighter as a knight. Even there, two-handed broadsword fighter competes with that position.
If there was no paladin, maybe I would have used that sword and board profile more, however paladin/blackguard is too interesting to miss.
So I don't think its our fault - its the paladin class introduction to D&D that is at fault for that
I've always played two types of fighters, but I'm usually a Paladin player, though I almost never make a typical pally.
The first fighter is a glaive fighter. I've just always loved the image of a guy in breast plate spinning one of those around him in a fight.
Second is a single hand weapon fighter, no shield, no off hand weapon. Just a single weapon, usually a <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> sword or other weapon you can use both two handed or one handed, and his fist.

Not trying to be judgemental, but you do realise the reason why one handed weapon fighters keep their free hand on their hips? It is pretty easy to chop it off if you actually try to use it in a swordfight. But I have also played such a playstyle of one sword fighting - the pirates.
Maybe that is the reason most pirates have a stub for arm?

A valid point, though most of such fighters tended to use lighter armor with little protection. My guys usually waltzed around in plate, gauntlets and all.
Besides, in DnD you rarely had to worry about loss of one's limbs. And there is also magical healing. If you can raise the dead, I'm pretty sure reattaching an arm is simple matter with the right spell.
Well Met my fellow fighters, i feel that the best style a fighter is one that is willing to attack the front, hold the line allow range and casters to do there damage from behind and the thieves to do there nasty's of attack from the backs of others and as always my great axe doing his damage on foes and anyone that test my party members b:cool

i always have a hard time with fighter builds. i do enjoy being able to tank a world boss (or insane wizard DPS), but in the end i usually get bored and favor classes with more flavor and variety. that being said though, i'm torn between 2 types of fighters, the monk... oh how i love the kung-fu dps action you give me or a full on tank, give me more hp and a few aoe attacks and i can stomp baddies all day long :-)

That will be my favorite fighter build.I love to jump in to the front lines and in the middle of the fray with my two-handed sword or axe and chop down everyone in a death dealing whirlwind.Its going to be awesome to do it in Neverwinter with the new engine.
on DnD PnP 3rd ed my favorite build of a fighter is the archery build type and the mounted fighter build type.... i have created both of those two and i have enjoyed it a lot specially on outdoor environments....

I'd say a fighter specced in reach weapons is one bad@$$ dealer of death. Increased range ftw. I might be a bit biased though, since reach-weapon fighters are a tad overpowered in TOEE the PC game, and that's my favourite DnD game...
After playing D&D 4E recently (never played it before) I enjoyed being a 1h warrior with a Spiked gauntlet in my other hand. Grabbing people, throwing them off balconies, tripping them down on the floor and punching them in the face ;D was awesome.
Really doubt a grab mechanic is going to be in the game though, which is a shame. Guess I'll go 2H axe.
With much work, and some tedious tinkering over many years, I believe my "Stout" Weapon Master Dwarven THF Build was by favorite fighter to play.
The Stout One has several goals. #1 is to build a weapons master. #2 is to be an easy to build and play fighter that anyone can roll, without the need for rare loot. #3 is to make him able to outkill most melees and take top kill count on most occasions.
So my favorite fighter would have to be a dwarf, greataxe or falchion in hand (although could use a multitude of different weapon types), whose a combat tactics specialist (Trip and stun).

When I read the above post, I knew I had read about such a "build" somewhere, and now I know. He was called duelist I think in some 4e book. The description was so rankling in my mind earlier...

Not in at launch, but I do hope it and Paladin will be put in relatively quickly.
I just hope Perfect World doesn't insist we pay for them.

4e: Battlerager with an axe, or a two hand weapon fighter with feats into plate mail (which technically is just one.)

More like AD&D roots. Kensai was a fighter kit.
In 4e the Tempest Fighter is the go-to build for a dual-wield DPR fighter.
The other fighter I love is the Brawler Fighter with an insane grapple focus...
