Improved bag of holding (bound to account bug?)

xenocide#6119 xenocide Member Posts: 251 Arc User
I had a couple Improved bag of holdings in my inventory that I had purchased on the auction house a few days ago.
They were unbound yesterday.
Logging in today they have now become bound to account, while i can see that other players have the same bags still posted on the auction house.

Im wonderng why my bags have become bound while others have had their bags remain unbound?

The "account" part is in white so its not bound to account yet until you equip it (it will turn blue then). All other bags bought from the zen market/AH are bound to account so now you can transfer them between characters instead of buying new bags.

    All the best,

Nope, they were sitting in my inventory and they are very bound to account, writtin in blue
  • cooljinxcooljinx Member Posts: 79 Arc User
Their bags remain "unbound to account" most likely because they have been in the AH BEFORE the change to the bags was made. Once bought, they will probably instantly bind to the buyer's account too.

This is not a bug. This was in the patch notes. All bags bought from the zen store are now bount to account and not tradeable between players.

The binding change was not an equip change, it was a pickup one. The bags can no longer be purchased with Zen and sold/transferred to another account via the AH/trade/mail. So, if you didn't transfer/sell them before the mod dropped, you have extra bags on your account now.

If you have ever gone through the exercise of transferring items to replace a bag, you need somewhere to send all your inventory. Not many folks have lots of characters on their account with enough empty space to take the contents of 6 bags just so you can replace the second bag in your inventory. That is why folks create mini-guilds to have Stronghold banks for the storage needed - and that is usually another account.

They were a good fixed-price item (like wards) while it lasted.

For the record, I just bought a bag from the Zen Market and it was unbound, as they said it would be. It might simply be a bug.

No. The change in the patch notes is "Bind on Equip (Account)", not on pickup. The exact wording of the patch notes:

"Bags are now Bind to Account on Equip, instead of Bind to Character."

If you go to the Zen store, the bags are also labelled as "Binds on Equip (Account)"

Maybe the bags that were purchased with the 50% VIP discount are marked and they decided these bags purchased with the VIP discount should be bound on pickup to prevent user transfer or resale of a VIP benefit?

I have the same issue. I bought that bag during the 50% off sale, and kept it in my bank this entire time. I never equipped the bag too. I submitted a support ticket, and the GMs can't fix it for us. It looks like this needs to be fixed at the developer level. The GM said "Game Masters have technical limitations and cannot revert the item's bind status. If the issue was caused by the recent update, I am afraid we cannot implement or influence changes for our games."

If this bind status change was intentional, then it's very unfair without prior notification or warning.

I'm experiencing this as well. The 3 unbound bags I had prior to the Mod launching are now bound to account. However, the 4th bag I purchased today is unbound until equip as the functionality is supposed to work.
  • xenocide#6119 xenocide Member Posts: 251 Arc User
Zen market bags are being listed as bind on equip.
Bags bought off of the auction house are also bind on equip.

I'm still curious why my unbound bags have become bound if I didn't equip them?
  • regenerderegenerde Member Posts: 3,050 Arc User
Well, it looks like they slapped the "bound to account" tag on ANY bag, instead of only changing the status of the ones that were allready bound to character...

Looks like they're hoping we'll forget about this and they can sweep this under the rug (as with many other existing problems). Because this wasn't fixed or even addressed at all in the latest patch, I have doubts they can fix this easily.

Same story for mine bag sitting on inventory for future sale.
The most ironic bug is on the helping system, if you try to open a ticket on game related to an object the entire game crash sistematically at every attempt... :'(

    same for me:
    - sitting unbound (never equipped) in my inventory before patch.
    - bound to account after patch. I did never equip it.
Clearly not working as the patch notes say.
In other words not working "as intended" - under the reasonable assumption that the patch notes actually describe how its supposed to work.

Not sure how this will play out.
This game has a history for labeling an obvious bug - after people point out the bug - as "working as intended".
The patch notes that indicated otherwise are relabeled as "miscommunication" - so sorry.

We will have to see, if the new EP is happy with the above described "bug fixing" method.
I would guess no, from what I have seen so far.

    Ticket Update:
    Thanks for the reply.

As we have searched our resources and carefully reviewed your issue, I was advised by our second tier of support these changes are due to the recent patch of the game. All bags that are unbound are now converted into bound to account status. Unfortunately, we cannot change the status of the bindings of these bags as this is intended because of the recent update.

Thank you for your kind understanding regarding our limited capabilities. If you need further assistance regarding this matter, feel free to update this ticket. For other concerns, please submit a new ticket on our support site.

So, i'm now trying to explain to the GM that the Infernal Descent release patch broke that bag, and that i'd like to see it fixed or the ZEN i spend for it refunded.

Any Devs around here that would like to give us an official reply on this topic?

Unfortunately this is a known pattern.
Sidestepping the issue, pretending not to understand what the actual issue is, ...

It seems to happen for those bugs, that are difficult to reproduce, because they only affect a small part of the playerbase.
In these cases they pretend that the customers reporting the issue are lying and no bug exists.
Everything is "working as intended", even when it is blatantly obvious that this is not the case.

    The patch notes are clear:
    - items do NOT become "bound to account" automatically, they only become bound to account when equipped.
    - the above statement is consistent with the labeling of those bags in the ZEN store and the AH
    - if a bag has never been equipped, its bind status should still be: "bound to account on equip", meaning its sellable and tradable, and NOT "bound to account"
    - I cannot believe that customer service does not understand the difference between the two
    - but obviously they are pretending not to understand what is obviously (semantically, syntactically and logically) a difference.

A similar issue happened to two of my sons.
They bought some Chult campaign completion tokens (maybe I gifted one or two to them).
They applied the tokens to their main and alts.
Tokens were working as intended (giving boons etc.)
Then there was a patch 2 month later, where the campaign was completely reset on the main character (not on the alts)
This ONLY happened to their main, not to the other characters on the account, that also applied a token.

Possible reason for the reset: The patch removed a token from inventory, that "bypassed certain campaign requirements".
This is a token from the preview server, that allows people to do campaign tasks that still should be locked.
My sons never went to Chult, so they probably needed this token.
In any case, the complete reset of the entire campaign (turning the Campaign completion token into worthless stuff, as if it had never been bought and applied) happened simultaneously to the removal of this token. The removal of the token "as not actually needed" was explicitly announced in the patch notes.

I guess the programmer knew why it was required, when the functionality for the token was programmed (it seems to be necessary for certain circumstances, for instance when a player has never set a foot into chult with none of her characters). But after 2 months this knowledge obviously became forgotten, and they deemed this token as "irrelevant"

Customer service would never acknowledge the issue, ZEN was never refunded.
In the end they had to buy the same token again.
I looked into the email correspondence with customer service. The issue was described crystal clear.
Customer service pretended not to understand the issue (probably because its a spurious bug, that happened to very few)

Quite understandably they (and I) were rather upset.
It put a heavy dent into our family's willingness to spend real money.

From a business perspective, this is ridiculous.
It is easy (trivial) to verify that the bug is there.
Even if they cannot fix it (because its difficult to reproduce the circumstances where and why it happens, because it happens only to a few customers), they should acknowledge it and refund the ZEN. After all, its just a "virtual item" and giving them the ZEN (or a working item) does not cost them ANYTHING.
Very very bad business practice. Probably (among many others) one of the reasons why people on the forums are so upset and bitter.

I think the company needs to rethink its policy, with respect to spurious (difficult to reproduce) bugs, that directly affect items purchased with ZEN (e.g. with real money - either from the player itself of from some other player, via ZAX).

The current policy treats customers that are affected with such a bug in the same way as they would treat a liar or a cheat.
Customers are ignored. Their reports are turned down.

This is debasing. Most customers that go through the tedious report function, the frustrating discussions with customer service (more customer scare) are reporting a real issue. They are not making things up, EVEN IF CRYPTIC CANNOT REPRODUCE the exact circumstances and reasons of the reported malfunction of its products.

In fact, there are - very likely - a couple of reasons why Cryptic so often fails to reproduce spurious bugs, that only affect a comparatively small group of players:
    - bad or no interaction between "customer service" and the development team (that produced the erroneous code)
    - lack of resource to track down spurious bugs
    - too complicated code, so that devs have difficulties understanding their own code

Under these circumstances, it is not a good idea to treat everyone who reports such a bug as a potential cheater, who is making up some story in order to get an item from the ZEN store for free. In particular, if several customers report the same issue, you can bet that it is a genuine issue. This seems to be the case here. IMO players affected by such a bug should be refunded the ZEN for the non-working item.

Well, another update to the ticket:
    Hello,

As per your request, please be informed that I have escalated this ticket to the next tier of support for further review and investigation. Kindly be patient as they will update this ticket once their investigation is complete. Having said that and due to the volume of tickets that we are currently receiving, our escalation team that specializes in issues like these might take longer than normal to reply in your inquiry. Rest assured that your ticket is our top priority, and our escalation team will handle it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter. For other questions or concerns, feel free to send us a new ticket on our support site.

I don't get it, the GMs have access to the logs, they should be able to see that these bags were changed by that patch and not through a player equipping them, so why can't they fix this problem?

Anyway, i hope that the next steps in correcting this mess are either allowing GMs to replace the fudged up bags with "Bind on Equip" versions, or another patch that will look for those wrongly altered bags and revert their status again...

I'm unsurprised that there has been a few patches and still no official recognition of the issue by the dev team. The longer they wait to address this, the more difficult it will be to properly resolve the issue.

Well, i'd say they should give support the green light to refund us enough ZEN to buy a new bag at this point. Would be perfect timing since they also have a sale running at the moment.

@nitocris83 any official update on this matter? We're waiting for nearly a month now...

I've requested a status update on this issue. We were looking at doing a data pull to determine the players impacted by this so we can determine the best solution based on volume.

Ok so I went to place the bags that I had bought and traded for when they where on sale onto the AH, to find out that now somehow they are bound to Account even though I have never placed them in a slot on a toon. So I make a report, they look into it and say that yes it is a bug and to post on the forum. I do. To find out that this has been going on since JAN. FRACKKKING JAN. What in the hell is going on? Really if I ran a business where I let someone use real money to buy something then change the rules on them or have an issue with the item and then it take 3 months and still nothing is in site to fix it. Well they would go someone where else to spend their money. Which is what I am doing. I have over the time here playing this game seen a lot of the ppl that I play with leave the game, due to PVP, MOD 15 changes, or the some old chasing after something to have it then become Craptastic a mod or two later. Seeing how this "bug" has not been fixed after 3 months leads me to think that either they have too many other bigger bugs to worry about (that scares me), they dont know how to fix it (once again scares me that someone might be able to break something but not fix it), or they just dont care. I have come to think that I am going to log in and pray and get my key and wait for my VIP to run and and then I am going to do what others I use to play with did and leave this game of bugs and let downs. Guess I cant wait to see what Amazons New World game is going to be like or Baldur's Gate 3
  • regenerderegenerde Member Posts: 3,050 Arc User
Well, as mentioned before, the support should simply look for the bugged bag in the players inventory and remove it, then issue the same bag as unbound version, problem not really solved, but it would at least be something until this bug is fixed with a patch somewhere in the far far away future.

To be honest, when it first happened i was pretty upset because it set my character back about 5,000,000 AD
Eventualy I got tired of waiting and just bound one to each of my alts so they have some more space to save for coupons... Dont really need it but The bags were just taking up room.

Its too bad they dont have some sort of a system where people were affected by this could just put in some sort of 'ticket' saying what happened, and have the problem solved for each person affected as they are being reported.

Would be a whole lot easier than this back and forth thing on the forum for months on end.

Anyway, forget about patching the broken bags, rather pointless after today, i'd like my ZEN refunded instead, thank you.
