Is it too late to start out at level one in Neverwinter? A few questions

Hello players of Neverwinter,

A couple of years ago I dipped into NW to give the game a try for a very short time. Back then I was kinda on an MMO break and didn't get into the game. Lately I've been looking at which MMO's seem popular and have noticed that NW pops up a few times. I'm a big fan of the D&D series and spent many of my younger years playing the board game HeroQuest with friends. My main question is, is it too late to start out anew without any other characters?

Another thing I've noticed is that there are a number of packs available for purchase on the official website. Is the player affected if they choose not to purchase these right away? Do these packs ever go on sale offering a discounted price?

Client wise I'm downloading the game through the Arc launcher and not going through Steam? Is there some kind of system on Steam to link an Arc account? Or does this not matter? Can the packs be purchased through Steam and then added to my Arc account?

On the subject of classes. Are any of the classes in game "easy" to pick and play? My choice of class in an MMO is normally ranged with a companion/demon/pet. Is there anything close to this in NW? I also wouldn't mind picking up a melee class if I enjoy the game.

If anyone would be willing to give this a quick reply that will be great!

Thanks for reading

    Hello players of Neverwinter,

I'm not sure if it's a forum bug, but I posted this about half an hour ago and it appears the post has vanished into thin air! I hope there's no forum rule that I've broken by asking a few questions! Anyway, I'll post my questions again.

1: Am I too late for starting out as a new character? I tried NW a couple of years ago, but was kinda on an MMO break so didn't put much time into the game. I'm a big fan of D&D and also played a lot of the board game HeroQuest with friends when I was younger.

2: I've noticed on the official website that there are a few packs available to purchase. Are these packs a must to fully enjoy the game? Would I be missing out on any content by not purchasing them right away? Do these packs ever go on sale at a discounted price?

3: Classes? In the MMO's that I have played, my chosen class is normally a ranged one with a companion/demon/pet. Does NW offer anything close to this? If I enjoy the game I might try out a melee class? Is there a class that might be described as easy to play?

4: I'm downloading the game without Steam? Is this a bad idea? Can packs etc still be purchased through Steam and added to my Arc account?

    Any answers are much appreciated

    Thank you

    1. No, you are not too late.
    2. No, not a must have. Yes, VIP is recommended to have. No, you will not miss out anything. Yes, there are coupon, sales and deeper sales.
    3. There are range character. There are camponions. GWF, a melee class, is easy to play.
    4. Don't use Steam. Steam gives more problem. Don't buy through steam neither. It gives you problem.

Fixed for you. Spam Queue was hungry. I took your post away from it's dinner table and told it to leave you alone. Merged your new thread with the original.

People are starting anew in NW all the time, in fact I am fairly certain the majority of the players are of the 'new' type :)
If you look at the boards etc you will see a lot of 'old' players bitching on this and that, but that is not representative for the game. It is normal that old players are a lot more active on the boards than newer players.

Basically NW got a fairly stable group of 'old' players, and then there is a whole lot of 'new' players joining and leaving the game all the time. Not everyone want to embark on the long journey to be BiS, but leave once they are level 70 and have seen all the zones etc.

2: I've noticed on the official website that there are a few packs available to purchase. Are these packs a must to fully enjoy the game? Would I be missing out on any content by not purchasing them right away? Do these packs ever go on sale at a discounted price?

NW is a 'pay to accelerate' game. You can get everything in game by playing it without spending any real money. Getting to BiS without spending real money could easily take you 2-3 years though.

You will need to buy a few things from the Zen(==real money) store, but there is an AD to Zen exchange that let you obtain Zen for in-game currency for those.

No content is blocked behind paywalls.

NW usually have Zen store discount events at regular intervals. The big ones are usually mid-summer and just before xmas where the entire store is at 40-50% discount for 1-2 days. The 'normal' discount events usually have 15-20% or so off.

3: Classes? In the MMO's that I have played, my chosen class is normally a ranged one with a companion/demon/pet. Does NW offer anything close to this? If I enjoy the game I might try out a melee class? Is there a class that might be described as easy to play?

To handle pets first, we all run with a pet. Scourge Warlocks can even run with two.

NW got a class for most playstyles, so you should not have a problem finding a class that matches what you want.

You get two free character slots with the account. Buying more character slots is one of the few things you need to do in Zen store, see comment above. There seems not to be any practical limit to the number of characters you can have, you will just have to buy the slots. Notice that getting more character slots by creating more accounts is a bad idea, there are some major advantages to having all characters on the same account.

4: I'm downloading the game without Steam? Is this a bad idea? Can packs etc still be purchased through Steam and added to my Arc account?

I would suggest staying away from Steam for buying Zen for NW. They have a rather complicated value chain from Steam into NW which means you will get some (temporary) locks on the account etc.

Best to buy Zen directly in Arc.

Just play the game from Arc, no need to mess with Steam for this. Also note: You can get free Zen from the Arc quests, see the scroll icon at lower right corner of Arc window.

    One remark regarding ranged classes.

Almost all classes can give buffs to your team our players near you. Apart from a few exceptions, these buffs have a limited, and in many cases rather short, range.

Because of this, the concept of "ranged classes" has a special meaning in Neverwinter. Most ranged classes will get better results by staying in close range of their targets and staying away from your group is, in most cases, a bad idea.

One advice regarding the zen shop.

Don't buy anything on the zen shop without some serious discount. Outside of events you can get coupons that offer 15-20% on different categories by doing your prayers (you'll get to know what this means once you reach the required level) each day. Make several characters and pray each day with each of them.

If you are going to play on PC - use the Arc Client - skip Steam. An added advantage for using the Arc Client is the "Arc Quest" - a simple activity that takes maybe 2 -3 minutes per day, but allows you to slowly earn Zen over time. The one drawback is that you do have to download a bunch of games to your system.

But once done, you only need to open a game for a few brief seconds for it to be recognized and counted by the reward system. Over time I've earned well over 5000 Zen doing this.

i am going to agree with the other 300 people who said never to late.

Why my GF just started her first toon two weeks ago. no vip or anything like that.

She did buy the moon elf pack because she liked the look of the race and the dress. After deciding she liked the game she got a vip token.

As for an easy mode class. that discussion will probably never end, I always say play what you like. Now there are min / maxers who say you got to have X, class / X race / X stats / X gear but if you don't listen to them you have allot more fun doing content but it will likely take you an extra 5 min to get done.

For me, when I started fresh on the XBOX and PS4, the Paladin seemed like the easiest to level to 70 and run all content, whether it is solo content or group. I normally do not like melee classes in RPGs (or even D&D for that matter), usually sticking to Druids, Wizards, Sorcerers, or Clerics. I have found though that I really enjoy playing a paladin in Neverwinter. Before they came, the TR was my "favorite melee class."

  • @mentinmindmaker - How many hours a day and days a year would it take for a new player to get BIS gear in 2-3 years without paying any money? I don't know, 2-3 years sounds highly optimistic to me.

One thing, among others, that NW does well is that it is relatively easy to get geared, with each new mod it brings new gear that is prety easily attainable even if yu are new.

It's not all roses and sunshine but nothing ever is.

The expensive part whether it's your time or your $$$ is the enchantments, which will help you considerably.

Best advice I can give any new player is find yourself a guild, it will save you time, money and hair replacement therapy costs.

"Best in Slot" - Typically refers to the best item or ability a character can equip or use. I.E. "That skill is BIS!" or "That artifact is BIS!" It can also refer to players who strive to achieve a goal of having their character as a whole be considered as using the best things that it can in the game. I.E. "He's a BIS player." The nature of "BIS" is often quite objective and is most usually an adjective or opinion with wide ranging and varying factors on its relevance.

Grind your 36k AD each day and do leadership profession on 5-6 characters for RP.

How much time you need for that will depend on your class, social context etc.

And that is BiS without a legendary mount. If the RNG does not give you a legendary mount from lockboxes, add another year to grind for that ;)

I've been playing on and off for 3 years, but, now, that I think about it, the total months I've been active are probably around twenty-one or so, less than two years. Have spent some money, around $170-180 and my main character is 13.7k (with Guild Boons from a rank 14 guild). I suppose I could get close to BIS in less than another year. I may eventually have rank 12s, but I really don't think I want to try for rank 13s or rank 14s. Or even Pure or Transcendent weapon and armor enchantnments. And whatever the next higher rank is going to be. I have more than 5-6 characters with leadership.

As far as grinding 36k AD every day, I would burn out doing that. I have before.

There's players talking about grinding 36k AD per day...I am quite new here, have a TR lvl 55 now and I can run a dungeon twice (the spider one) and get maybe 10k and after that its finished, i get 200 per next run or so.
How do I get those amounts?
Oh and I like to spend as little real $ as possible

Oh, one xtra question: I play through Steam which seems to give problems now and then. Can I easily switch or do I have to do the whole download again ?

You can just use the game client to open the game. You don't need to use arc or steam to play. Launching the game from the exe file is what I do since the launchers aren't necessary.

@citoijen - You will be able to make 36k AD a day at level 70 in a variety of ways.

    2 Dungeons
    2 Skirmishes
    2 PvP matches (not recommended)

Epic Dungeons give you piece of gear you can salvage for AD if you don't need to use it. If you have the special key made to open the 2nd chest, you get more. Some skirmishes give you things like rings or companion gear that you can salvage if you don't need to use them. You can also get rings to salvage from Demonic Heroic Encounters if you don't need to use them. Demogorgon and Tiamat may also provide salvage, again more if you have the required special key. However, you most likely won't be running Demo or Tiamat for awhile.

Steam doesn't give me any problems, though I would buy Zen through Arc if you choose to buy Zen. You can purchase Zen for your account on the Arc website without downloading anything. In order to play through Arc, you must download the Arc installer and download Neverwinter again. (I think, but I'm not 100% sure about that.)

At level 70, 2 skirmishes and 2 epic dungeons each day will bring you close to 36k/day. The AD comes from the direct run rewards as well as salvages. Best salvages are in the harder dungeons where you get purple drops.

You also get protectors seals from dungeon runs that you can use to buy salvageable purple rings.

You can also run the weekly quests for 4500 AD per run once a week, there are 6 of them, so those by themselves will close to fill one day.

Note that the daily skirmish/dungeon rules will change with Mod 12b that comes on Oct 24th, likely it will be harder to reach the 36k AD cap then.

In addition to salvage, the dungeon runs also drop sellable items. If you are lucky you can get drops worth a few 100k AD from dungeons, but even lesser drop worth a few k AD's are worth selling on the AH.

Also note you get a 10% AD bonus for being VIP, and a limited 50% AD bonus from invoking. It all helps ;)

VIP is worth the money, mostly funding itself - you can buy Zen for it from ZAX.
