Because the devs have decided that ineffective spam blockades are more important than the experiences of new players.

I agree, the exceedingly heavy-handed restrictions on new players has done absolutely nothing to limit goldseller spam or activities... perhaps it's time to admit these new rules were in vain and should be scrapped.

Severely limiting the ability of genuine new players from communicating with other players was just a terrible idea in the first place and really has no place in an MMO.

Once you've completed enough of the starting areas you'll be able to chat and use other elements of the game. As Becky pointed out it, it has caused issues for brand new players - I cannot imagine that it would be an enjoyable experience trying to figure it all out on your own.

At level 14 you should be around the Tower district by now. You'll shortly be able to get the Plague Tower series of quests and once that is done you should be good.

I strongly suggest you join a guild that is willing to take new low level toons. Sadly both active Cloaks guilds are full, but there are several solid guilds in my alliance that will take you (PM me if you'd like an intro). Either way, many guilds have out-of-game chat or voice comms you can use. My alliance uses Discord for example.

You can't use in-game chat until you qualify (that link posted above has the details)

Except they're not. For whatever reason (probably "we won't disclose exactly how it works to try to fool those pesky spammers even more"), that won't do it and you have to complete Blackdagger Ruins, and *then* you can finally talk.

This means there are three skirmishes and two dungeons available before a totally new player is so much as allowed to say "hi" to their party. Not that the content is really hard or anything, but the idea of it leaves a foul taste.

As implied by Kvet and tested by other guild leaders, NO in-game chat is available to new players regardless of how much they wish to connect. Not party, not guild, not alliance.

Wait... not even guild chat is available? Seriously? That is just pants-on-head levels of stupid! :disappointed:

Guild recruitment is near next to impossible with the current set up. Most level 70 players can bury their head in the sand because we are grandfathered into chat. This situation is deplorable. Imagine how potential customers would feel about your new restaurant, if you told them they could not have menus until they ate five meals on a punch card? We are leaving brand new people in the dark and I can only imagine they are quitting after they get this cold shoulder treatment. I would like to know what fool invented the New Coke formula too.

Blackdagger Ruins. That's like halfway to 60, no?
My chest literally hurts a little from learning this, like someone put a huge rock on it.
Had it been like that when I started, I'd quit the game before leaving PE for the first time.

Cryptic silenced all players until they have played a few days in game and solved a lot of quests.
This solution was easier and cheaper than implementing a better spam filter, or one that the user can customize.

    Speculation:
The loss of new players (and revenue) is less than the investment into a player customizable spam filter.
10% of monthly income is generated from new players within the first few hours (horse?). Losing 50% of those players who realize they can not talk in an MMO have already spent some money. Their leaving does not hurt much.
    /Speculation

    Suggestion:
If Cryptic would filter all lines with more than 10 characters outside of [a-zA-Z ] we would see much less spam.

Now, if Cryptic themselves implement this filter server wide the spambots would certainly find a way to circumvent it, because the spambotfriend can see which spam is working and which does not.
If the filter were on my side (on the Client, no need to use server CPU time for this) the spambot would not know if his message arrives on my screen. Hence he would continue to spam with his stupid messages and NOT find another way to circumvent my filter.

This would be player friendly, that's why I am certain we will never see this kind of thing.

Yes indeed, all Cryptic really needs to do is hire someone with a modicum of RegEx experience and it would be fairly trivial to create a system to filter out all the goldseller spam. Especially as they seem to favor using punctuation to get around whatever filters are already in place.

There are also other steps they could take to limit the activities of the goldsellers, but crippling the ability of new players to even talk to other people for the first 15 levels... in a game where the whole point is to play with other people... is just crazy. The whole idea should be scrapped and focus should be on detecting the goldsellers and banning them, not punishing people who are trying to become new customers!

I think the link to the post is good, but just for an easier to decipher way of helping you to get chat (and the ability to mail items to yourself):

Follow the Benign Order of the Third Eye campaign, or follow the deeds in your campaign screen.
Keep in mind if you've outlevelled the area, the quest giver won't have any indication that they have a quest for you, so you'll need to go up and interact with the quest givers in order to accept the quest.

http://neverwinter.gamepedia.com/List_of_quests click on the area that you want to complete. Officially you have certain quests to complete in the area, but in order to get those quests, you have to go through the entire questline anyway. You need to complete three of these chains.

Chain: Return of the Crown Quests to complete: The Trail of the Crown, Cornering Karzov
Chain: The Tower District Quests to complete: Returning the Pain, Fists of the Warband, Into the Cloak Tower
Chain: The Plague Tower Quests to complete: Troubled Times, The Plague Tower
Chain: Blackdagger Ruins Quests to complete: The Sea Caves, Bloodying the Bandits, Grimstorm Keep
Chain: Neverdeath Quests to complete: Dragon Attack, Opening the Way, The Clockwork Tomb
Chain: Helm's Hold Quests to complete: The Underscar, The Being from Beyond, The Sanatorium

Basically, any three of the deeds as listed in the campaign tree. (press "]" key to open the campaign screen)

Basically when you are level mid 30's and have to start over because you didn't get the serious help you needed from the players.

    Grimstorm Keep required level 25
The Clockwork Tomb required level 30
    The Sanatorium required level 34

I received a game survey, my response is on another thread (related) here.

    EDIT: Added level requirements.

I was just trying to help answer the OP's question, definitely not saying it is right AT ALL. It's just that this poor player is wondering when and how he/she will be able to use the chat, and we kind of did a right-hand turn and started discussing how stupid the requirements are. I tried to lay out the format as easily as I can so they can proceed and know where to look for help.

I agree wholeheartedly - the whole thing is stupid, don't know any other way to put it. It does nothing to prevent scammers and botters, it is a huge hindrance on new players, and it makes for a terrible introduction to Neverwinter in general. Not to mention, the poor new player can still read TONS of scammer messages in zone chat, but can't ask for help anywhere! They can't even ask to be invited to a guild. It's shameful.

@blackjackwidow Sorry didn't mean to come off sounding like I was attacking your statement. I just wanted others to understand the bar on this is set way too high. Cryptic need to examine what they did. For the most part, I estimate the majority of spammers never leave Protector's Enclave. Why such broad sweep of all the chat channels? I tend to question, if they did it this way because, it was a heavy handed solution or just easy for them to do? As many of us have suggested a filter that we can control would be nice. Not just on or off. I would like to know who thinks the number 55 is dirty word? I typed level 55 in chat and it was filtered out just the number fifty-five. The world is made up of all types of people. I rather have a list I can edit and not something they think might offend me.

I am currently leveling my last two characters out of 8, and looked at their status. Nicholas is level 61 now in the Drowned Shore, he never went to Knox except to tell him Willy is dead. So Nicholas never did the Plague Tower as part of his run, never retrieved the crown, just went straight to grab Karzov in Blacklake for the bag. Thankfully I am grandfathered in on my account otherwise Nicholas would be stuck talking to the wall.

Now I admit, I know my way around NW and can skip some less thrilling aspects to get from A to Z. But what if others are plodding around in the game wondering where the next quest is located? I cannot see them doing that for many hours before getting depressed and leaving.

    The problem I see is:
If you happen to start NW on a 2*XP weekend you might never see the end of a quest line as you are used to - no yellow question marks as you outlevel every area before you finish it.
I don't know why the dev's decided to hide quests 5 levels below your current level, but I am sure I would not mind if they hide the quest with the tutorial to Stronghold Siege PvP.

If I'm not mistaken, Guild chat won't be availible until you actually join a guild. However, just sitting here thinking about it, they may have changed that as well. It wouldn't be too difficult to make one just for spammers. As was mentioned previously, there are guilds out there willing to take in new gammers. Ours being one of them. "Animal Attraction" We're pretty small, and mostly PvE, but we're freindly and like to help others. We do screen/interview players though. And lvl and TIL are not an issue, as we can help with both. It will get better as you lvl up, so my suggestion... if you like the game, stick with it.

Being a new player myself, I have to tell you that this is the most ridiculous 'feature' I've ever seen in an MMO.
I couldn't talk to anyone up to level what, 32?

I am a PVP player and tend to play most often than not, games where I can level solely on PVP, and I was obliged to bow to the god of carebears and do the PVE to enable my chat.

PVE is not so bad in this game, but man, this game has so much potential blewn out of it.
How am I supposed to stay in the game if I can't even chat?

I regret the day I spent 40$ on this game. Should have bought Wolcen, ESO or something else.
I am only playing in hope of finding more frequent PVP queues by end game.

Have you done the Cloak Tower and Plague Tower dungeons? You will need to queue for these (press K, click on the radio button, then click Join Queue). Be aware that super-high-level 70 characters run these dungeons really fast for daily AD. It will probably not be a fun dungeoning experience, but just run along behind the person racing through and try not to die. :( Now that you're level 29, the quest givers will not have a question mark above them to indicate they have a quest for you.
