I heard an interview with Scott where he talked about their parsing for how long people spent on CN runs... 1.5-2 hour averages, which they considered unacceptably long.
They don't seen to have considered that the majority of players loved it that way. For all that there are a few voices saying, "well, I never went in there because I can't get two uninterrupted hours"... most players seem to have *enjoyed* having the option to engage in a LONG dungeon crawl, not always short skirmish-length groups.

I certainly wouldn't mind spending 2 hours or so in an area exploring all the nooks and crannies either solo or with some friends that wanted to explore also, but personally 2 hours does seem like a very long amount of time for something you had to do over and over and over and over for the chance to get whatever specific loot you wanted that only dropped there.

It was BoE loot. People who ran it a lot sold those items to people who never ran it at all. There was undoubtedly sometimes drama over loot rolls (regulars arranged profit splits), but it was viewed as both a fun and profitable way to spend your time.
Changes in NW's itemization and equipment systems really undermined all that, with a variety of consequences. And the devs are floating the idea of bringing back more BoE stuff (but not yet), for the good of the game.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I kind of like the direction the game is headed.
I've been playing for over two years. I've didn't get my T2 armor till they started dropping like candy in Tiamat. Getting the T2 armor by pugging was hard because the low chances of a successful run. And you had to avoid groups with same guild members because of rampant loot-kicking.
I've never done a CN run. My GS was too low to be accepted into a pre-made, and pugging it was nearly impossible. Also stories of people spending three, four, or more hour in CN and sometimes walking away with nothing was a turn-off.
Now I have four toons all with near-BiS gear because they can be obtained in a more predictable manner. Like it or not, the devs are catering to a silent majority who prefer a more predictable grind and have only half-hour or one hour at a time to game. Most of these people don't post on the forum
