Honestly, given what happened today involving the laying off of 9 Neverwinter employees, I have to agree with Magenubbie. It seems to me as though Cryptic's current options are to release a bugged mod in two weeks, or to release a paladin class, and buy themselves some more time to finish up mod 6 content. Of course, this means they'd also have to add Paladin gear sets to our current dungeons and loot tables, but I think it'd be worth it.
This really sucks. Sorry to all those that got laid off. You really did make a fine game. (not perfect but what is)
I am not sure what this means for neverwinter going forward. The general thought was that it was already understaffed losing 9 developers is huge. And if cost was an issue that doesn't bode well for what they will be adding to the zen shop
tl;dr:
You promised me broken content and I want my broken content on time!
Apparently you didn't read the ps. I don't want broken content. Who does. Only that they deliver what they said when they said they would or stop announcing that stuff will be be ready before they can get it ready.

I don't think the ones who actually do the coding are among the ones who are let go. It seems like mainly the community and PR staff got the axe. And if PWE save money from a lower salary burden, perhaps they are not too inclined to be too aggressive with their Zen Store.
If its a money thing, buy some Zen. If every player pulled out a credit card and spent 10$ on the game, it would make quite a nice chunk of money. I plan too one of these days. I wouldn't mind paying $7.99 for Mod 6 considering how much people raved about it.

Also I've heard that PWE/Cryptic was hiring alot of people for Neverwinter. So why would they be hiring and firing unless it was to rotate out the bad apples. And I could almost believe that except....

"Rotten apple" can also mean seniority = higher pay, benefits,...
...also "working in the wrong place" or due to e.g. personal grievances...
...meh.
Good luck and good new jobs, poor sods!

Thanks for all the fish.
MMORPG fans will recall that Cryptic has pulled at least one developer from live projects to work on unannounced games. Those projects will continue: “The secret projects are unaffected,” says our source. “They’re a big focus for the company moving forward.”
You don't reward corporate greed by paying them more money when they fire people to save a bit in the short term. You reward companies that put out good content, which requires investment and sufficient employees to put that content out.
I guess you can save all your money instead of "rewarding" any company then. Blizzard, EA, Sony, etc all fired a lot of people to make their balance sheet look good.
Sorry to those that lost there jobs if they weren't goofing off. But seeing as there hiring hopefully now someone will come on and finally fix the mobile gateway that has been down for weeks.
When you're digging a whole chances are you'll end up falling in it. It didnt take long for Neverwinter to go from this cool, new game with awesome combat system and big name behind it to an imbalance-filled, pay to win mess.

Never good for folks to lose their jobs but it is 100% definitely a straightforward financial decision. Employee salaries will be their biggest fixed cost. They will have looked at the money coming in and the money going out, looked ahead to the forecasts for the coming months and made a decision. Most companies can absorb short-term fluctuations in the money side of things but not many can sustain it in the longer term.
The modern gaming industry is a very uncertain place, requiring companies to invest many millions in their latest, greatest game in the hope that when it arrives it is still relevant and that it is accepted by us, the fickle gaming community.

this. there were articles, that they have less income last decade of last year. you dont need to be finance guru to expect this trend continue, even is worse and worse. its whats we players are thinking about refinement issues, pvp thing and even pve content, when we get only tiamat last module. i would rather see they hire new people, to make game better and more profitable, players are of course ready to spend on creative things...

No, why would you think that?
The article clearly said otherwise.

No, the rumors says it's a post-apocapyltic game you may play on mobile device or something like that.
