And I can just share my daily experience yesterday from someone who still enjoys the game.
I have a 19k CW, a 15.5k DC, and an 11k HR that I am currently playing. I also have a GWF and a GF that are just leadership/prayer alts at this point.
1. Log in, pray, do professions, do some inventory management among my characters.
2. Check auctions, buy some cheap RP (mainly blue gear) for my artifact gear.
3. Do the CTA a couple of times on my CW. It's kinda fun, don't get any good drops, except a Cruel Rank 5. Oh well.
4. Do the DR lair on my CW. No Eye
5. Do the DR lair on my DC. Also no Eye
6. Do the dailies in WoD on my CW. Trying to get my Winter Festival companion finally to lvl 30.
7. Do the dailies in WoD on my HR. He actually fails the volatile potion quest because the mobs kill him before he can deliver the potion. This guy really needs better gear. I ponder this for a little bit.
8. Do the dragon roundabout on my HR. Nothing good, but more cheap RP for my CW/DC. I mail the blue gear to my CW and DC.
9. Do the Sharandar dailies and DR lair on my HR. He is still getting his boons so not finished with all the campaigns yet. Only 3 more days until my HR is ready for IWD.
10. Do the ToD dailies on my HR. It was the introductory quest for Rothe Valley so it took a little while. Go to Rothe Valley, kill the dragon, get the Draconic Bracers from Great Success! So that is good. I think I will go with Draconic gear for my HR. But I will have to get his GS up in order to farm Lostmauth to get the Draconic Armor. So I ponder this some more.
11. Go to Whispering Caverns, kill Vilithrax a few times trying to get the Draconic Boots to drop. Sadly they don't drop.
12. Do some more inventory management on my characters and log out.
I didn't do PVP, I didn't do Tiamat, I didn't do much with my DC, but I could have. So there was still a lot to do.
I have found that if you just focus on ONE character and ONE game mode, you'll be disappointed because there is only so much enjoyment that one single experience with one single character can bring you. If you dabble with many characters doing many different things it will retain your interest a lot more.
And as others have said, if you really really are a PVP focused guy, this game definitely isn't for you. Here, PVP is a tacked-on sideshow to the main event.

The funny thing is I was never pvp focused until I played Neverwinter. Most of the pve content is pretty stale to me. Then again I was spoiled for years on a nwn1 persistent world that had about 1,000 players, a team of professional developers who developed and maintained the mod as a hobby, and who played the game vigorously as players themselves. It was all pve.
Neverwinter lacking engaging pve content (teamwork, problem solving, challenge), but having a second to none action combat system, I was drawn naturally to pvp.
But ya, I am seeing that if a person does not enjoy the pve in neverwinter, he should spend his micro-transaction budget elsewhere because pvp is indeed a tacked-on side note and not taken very seriously by the devs.

I always have some short-term and long-term goals in mind as I play this game. Now that Tiamat has "kinda" played itself out, my goal is to save all my Astral Diamonds(AD) and Refining Stones in preparation for Module 6. Not sure what to fully expect in Module 6, but I am sure we will need tons of AD.
I am very happy that we will be increasing levels from 60 to 70 in addition to all the coming changes for Module 6. If you did not have a chance to see the dev stream from Friday, you should watch it. It mainly talks about the Paladin, but they also mention some things are on the way.
There is always a lull period between modules, but that doesn't mean there is nothing to do. Farm, professions, make AD, level alts to 60, etc.
All of this really exemplifies the inherent flaw in most MMOs, where the point is apparently to get to max level, grind until you have the best gear, all so you can... grind more repeatable content you've already repeated hundreds of times in your sleep with less effort.
Gods forbid you do dungeons after the missions that lead up to them in this game, when you've already outleveled everything the zone has to offer (if you hadn't outleveled it before you even got there). Levels are a horrible way of tracking advancement, but since they used it in the old P&N game, everything has to do the same, except for the occasional CURPS/Champions/WoD that tries to break free of that outdated nonsense that guarantees a cap on available advancement, and misaligns content. If they converted all hostiles to scaled combatants, it would at least be a first step in trying to keep some of this stuff relevant. Not enough, since even those aren't much of a challenge if you're blue'd out, or worse, purple'd.
I know, I know. If you hate this game so much, why do you play it? I ask myself that a lot. The thing is, nothing else lives up to City of Heroes either. I liked some parts of Elder Scrolls Online, but it had a lot of the same (we gotta make it just like WoW or we can't succeed) philosophy that every other MMO out there has (This, SWTOR, pretty much every Class+Level RPG in digital existence since before SWG's NGE). Even CoH did it, and that part of it sucked too. I play this because even though they do so much so horribly, nothing else does it any better. I really miss when the MMO industry was growing, and looking forward to new things, before WoW came along and made so much money that everybody was unwilling to invest in development of anything different.
I'm gonna go grind my dailies, and refine my self-loathing.
