This is the second time I've lost items trying to send them to myself through the mail. Everything seems normal until after I hit send and the mail never arrives, taking my items to never be seen again. It was no big deal the first time, but now I've lost a greater vorpal and a lesser soulforged. I don't know what's causing it or even if anyone else has had this problem, but something is seriously wrong here.
are you just sending it to your handle or a character name PLUS handle?
you may have a handle which is 1 letter off someone elses and be accidentally sending it to them.
To make sure it goes to you, use both.
IT should come up with a list of your characters when you type in your handle

I've been replying directly to a mail from myself. The handle is my own and I always double check before hitting send. The first time this occurred I had my character name included so it's very much a case of the mail going poof than going to the wrong person.

Try sending yourself an empty message to see if it gooses the box into displaying the missing one.
And take the lesson to heart to never, ever use the mail to transfer anything valuable if you can help it. Profession assets can't go in the shared bank (ideally, get a friend to help and use trade window), but enchants can. It is much safer.

While you're right, it's mindblowing that you should even need to give this advice. Mails shouldn't go missing, period. Cryptic owns the whole shooting match end to end- it's not sending a package UPS to Gaza.
If you use Gateway your mail will send - but you can overstep the quantity limits (there is a limit to the number of mails with attachments you can receive from other players, including yourself).
Do this - check your mail on Gateway - it may show the "hidden" messages.
I had this happen to me once; I had to delete a bunch of messages before the hidden ones finally appeared.
I'm not saying this is the solution, I'm just saying this is something you can try out to see if it works.

Can't send mail with attachments from Gateway.
And I do agree with Kattefjaes. The danger inherent in the mail system is appalling, and since there's no way to prove to CS that you didn't screw up, you're SOL if something goes wrong.

They should really have a SENT email tab, so you can have a record of
what was sent to which address and what was attached.
Did you really think anyone could steal the power of the god of thieves?

I can confirm, some messages, most spammer`s messages are available only via a gateway.
If you will delete them, expect the rest to be delivered, but sometimes delayed.
Also, there is an issue with messages with attachments from ignored players, that can never be delivered to you as long as you ignore them, especially causing you to perma block your sent queue.
Strange things are definitely happening. I checked my gateway mail and I see returned to sender from 2 different people that I've never even messaged or even knew messaged me. It got me to thinking that when I reply to a mail ingame, could it possibly be redirecting to a hidden message instead of the handle I specified? Both of these return to sender messages are dealing with 2 people I never even knew messaged me.

I didn't even know mail could do that, to be honest.
What confuses me even more is I don't ever remember having 5 adventurers to even send, much less would have tried to send them to a completely random person just to have it sent back.

I know that - I mean to CHECK mail on gateway - it will usually show the hidden messages (messages that appear in gateway, but not in-game). This way you know you have to delete some so the other will appear in-game.

The whole thing is a bit alarming. I am taking becky's advice re: the shared bank to heart- and will keep a slot free for enchant swaps.

I know that one particular forumite lost enchants in the mail that likewise should have sent to self. They were (this is all anecdotal, but no reason to lie in a bug report) delivered to another player, and sadly not somebody who was inclined to return them, only to gloat.
The "return to sender" adventurers seems like the OP received mail that should have been delivered to somebody else. Like I said, I still didn't think the system could do that. I know it refuses to send mail with attachments to someone with a full mailbox, but I've only seen it generate an error and return your things directly to your inventory.
