Protector or Tactician for GF PvE solo and dungeon runner ?

Hello,

Actually title says it all. I like how this class have been reworked, finally there is reason to take GF into dungeon party.
I like leveling up new toons so instead respecing my lvl 60 GF i created new toon and now im thinking what path i should chose.
For sure Protector will be more tanky, from other side tactician can offer some extra buffs for the party, i dont know if not for cost of huge drop in tankiness and survivality.
Choices choices...

There is also 3rd option - tactician/protector hybrid but it does have serious dissadvantage - most likely such char wouldnt get capstone of any from 2 paths.

Can you, fellow GF's give me some advice what path is better for PvE and dungeoning with the party ?

Both are good for solo and dungeons tbh, just depends on your playstyle.
Tacticians rely on being hit and not blocking so much for their feats so would take more damage than a protector, but then would also have a slight dps advantage. So I would say tactican is maybe more suited for the more aggressive/dps oriented player.

I personally am a protector with 10 in tactician, which is more based in reducing damage to myself and the party. I also like to think protector has slightly better threat/aggro control, which helps in dungeons if you know what you are doing. That said I probably take slightly longer to kill things in solo but then am less worried about dying and can take more on :P

If you want to go tactician I would go swordmaster simply because of the 5 seconds of immunity. Enforced threat and supremacy of steel spam to go with knight's valor to stall off the time for team mates to finish things off.

My GF was conq from release to about mod 2. I always had trouble in dungeons, however, and eventually retired him for a GWF.

With mod 4 I immediately respecced to prot and tried a couple T2s. I really didn't care for it all that much. The build worked, I just felt like a turtle. I bought another respec and went tactician. I'm enjoying this a lot more. Granted it's not worlds apart from prot as far as play style goes, it just feels better suited to me. After a couple weeks, I think this character is back to being my 'main'.

Sounds to me like tanking in general wasn't for you then :P Being a GF or tank isn't about charging in doing max damage, it actually requires you to think of more than that and focus more on keeping enemies attacking u and surviving the dmg :P

My GF is a Swordmaster Protector btw, works quite well too ;) But I can see it being just as helpful for tactician based on the amount of unblocked dmg u will be taking.

in my analysis the best specs are conqueror and tactician. conqueror because its versatile and works in every aspect of the game, and more damage always helps.

Tactician is great for groups coupled with knights valor and in certain boss encounters. for example, as a tactician spec you can easily solo kite the adds in dracolich without needing a healer or a CW. But alone doing your own things, you will feel rather pathetic.

I haven't ventured into IWD with my GF yet because there's only so many hours in the day and I wanted to get a bit better soloing gear first, but I have been doing some ToD stuff with him when time permits. I run an IV Tactician spec (feated Trample, lots of control) and my only complete armor set is Knight Captain, and while playing my GF doesn't feel like an unstoppable swathe of destruction like my characters in more DPS-oriented classes, "pathetic" is not the right word either. The biggest piece of advice I would give for playing a build like mine is to get very good at positioning yourself so that Terrifying Impact - which you can use A LOT - will prone everything. I enjoy him, and I can only see him getting better as I get him nicer goodies.

One note on Tactician is the capstone was changed so it doesn't only work from unblocked damage, so it's better than ever in that regard... though I still mostly don't block unless I have to.
