I would say you get about 1 success in 3 tries, on average over time. You can hit some very nasty streaks of failure though.
I've levelled Alchemy to 20 on 11 characters. I'd say it takes about a week each, and most of the time is eaten up by high level research. I also have a reserve of experimenting materials and can tap other characters to produce items I'm short on, so minimal time is wasted in running out of stuff.
The first character to level Alchemy took a couple of weeks because I had to keep stopping to make things and to hire and train workers.
If you save all those potions you get while levelling, you can take a good chunk of time off. Between gathering the materials, then refining them, then making potions, it can chew up time. I've got an alt with a stack of each potion, so when I need to level alchemy, I can just start mailing pots.
With potions and both the blue and green Aqua's on hand, a week wouldn't be a crazy estimate. Less if you're a diehard Gateway user.
I agree with Becky's assessment. One in three is what I usually count on. A week is about right if you don't have to spend a lot of time gathering resources. The Minor and Lesser potions don't really drop from mobs as far as I can tell. The only way to get them without using Alchemy tasks is by invoking low level chars. That's why they're more expensive on the AH than level 30 and 45 pots. Low level alchemy is kind of slow to level up. Mid range is faster but when you start needing Aqua Regia (and then 2 AR per experiemnt) it really slows down unless you're willing to throw AD around and buy the stuff. If you just buy the pots and vitriol, you can get by with only making Aqua Vitae and Regia and it goes pretty quickly, subject to RNG of course.

Becky is spot on. 7 days with white workers and a generous supply of reagents is reasonable. 4 purple alchemists will cut that time down to 3 days.
As for percentages, I find somewhere between 1:3 and 1:4 is average. Again, Becky nailed it.
Thanks for the responses.
Potions are like 200 AD a piece right now.

Well, Alchemy takes a long time and can be very expensive the FIRST time through, but after that, it is the cheapest, quickest, and easiest of all the Professions to level up, so take that into account when you do your math, if you plan of multiple Toons. You just need to use the first one to make your Mats and do you Gathering for the second one.

Loot skill nodes - for EVERYTHING. Skill nodes (those packs you access with Religion Kit etc) are good sources for random professions supplies, marks, and other useful items.

I notice mention of leveling alchemy on more than one char... is there any advantage to doing so?
I leveled it on one char a long time ago and never used it again.
I think it's mostly because Alchemy is probably the fastest profession to level to 20, and it takes three professions at level 20 to unlock what is most peoples' final profession slot. I've leveled it on a couple of characters, and I don't really use it much either, unless I'm running low on class dye packs.

Alchemy is also the fastest way to unlock the "Complete a task and earn the Tier 3 result" slot.
You only need to get to level 3 to have access to rare tasks (such as batches of minor potions and elixirs), and mithral Alchemy tools are pretty cheap. Prices have gone up, but I think I got 4 mithral tools for under 400k AD.
Once you max out Alchemy once it becomes the quickest and easiest profession to level up again. The first toon can make all the materials you need for the second.

The success rate is somewhere between 25% - 30%, from my experience.
