I have been wondering if this is a bug or not but I guess I'll ask here. I have a Grandmaster Alchemist which is a 50% speed increase. I did transmutation research which takes 8 hours. I would have thought that the timer would have been dropped to 4 hours but instead its new timer was 5 hours and 20 minutes?

The task completes 50% faster, not in half the time. Half the time would be 100% faster.

The easiest way to explain it is through a driving example. To reach your destination 100 miles away driving at 50mph, it would take you 2 hours. Now, if you get a 50% increase in your speed, you are now traveling at 75mph. Now, it will take you 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach your destination (with the same distance). If you had a 100% speed increase (your speed doubles) you will be traveling at 100mph and now it takes 1 hour to reach your destination. If you have a 200% speed increase (your speed is tripled) you are now driving at 150mph, which would take 40 minutes to each your destination. This is the same way that encounter cooldowns work.

I see what you are saying now but still doesn't explain one thing because I'm just not seeing how 5 hours and 20 minutes is 50% faster.

    8/1.5 (50% increase) = 5.3333333333333333333 = 5 hours 20 minutes.
    8/2 (100% increase) = 4 hours.
    8/2.5 (150% increase) = 3.2 = 3 hours 12 minutes.

If you want to see the new time, you do this:
    1. Convert the % increase to a decimal
    2. Use the following formula: Initial / (1 + X) where X is the % increase in decimal form

Again, 50% does not mean the time is cut in half.
