surviving Solo quests

My CW is at 60 and has some epics but I have trouble with the next quests (Dread Ring/Shanadar) so I wonder how to tweak him to survive better. I can post stats when game comes back up. Maybe a build that will help slow down the mobs and kill them. I also can't survive in the artifact quest. Did it fine with the melee classes but not Cw/DC or TR if that points to a problem.
Thanks for taking time to throw me a bone

What do you have for gear?

You need to upgrade to blues and purples (search for ancient purple items for off slots, they are really good AND cheap, like some of them are 6-10k only, they are bis slot alot of times.. so not getting them is kind of a waste of time)

Buy blue armor set, for next to nothing, couple k at most.. dont use greens.

MOST important buy a purple main hand, I just went with the most damage and most power I could get that was reasonable.. this will up your damage.

I use in PVE open world.. nothing fancy, just all aOE damage.. Chill Strike on TAB, Storm Surge, Shard and Conduit of Ice.. most of the time you will be fighting multiple enemies and this hits them all .. Chill Strike and Shard do some control effects.

Im Thaum build atm, but have been renagade, open world PVE doesnt really matter.. everything goes boom and dies with this rotation. I do have a normal Vorpal.. but just had a lesser plaguefire for a long time with mine, but you need no weapon enchant to kill in those two zones.. just get your gear score up a little and buy some better pieces.

Ways to earn AD while low gear score includes :

    Skirms 1k apiece during hour..
Run t1s (especially after gearing up just slightly more) salvage purples..
Run GG, just doing the turn in part gets you a quick k of ad, takes 5 minutes.
Run Daily DV and Daily Foundries.. DV is easy, it just takes a little knowledge to complete and foundries are all solo, you can even ask for people to run with you.

You can then invoke and build your leadership up.

Join channel Legit and ask for advice as well as poeple will be willing to run you through t1s during the GG , if they are not running anything else that is.

I would suggest not to run daily PVP/dom matches without a approx gear score of 10-12 k minimum, all you really do is hurt the team if you are too low. Not saying you need to have super high.. but too low and you just get killed quickly.. couple hits if your like 6-7k honestly.

Use dodges. Use them like they're candy. CWs get loads of them, and stamina recovers fast enough so you can pretty much cast, dodge, cast, dodge etc indefinitely.

Mobility is your friend. Also, don't be afraid to dodge-cancel casts: "start steal time WHUPS dodge" is better than "finish steal time and die".

Stack llife steal. If you don't already have epic armor, go for Blue 'of Restoration' gear that has LS on it. Also, try to get 1k in Def if at all possible and stack HP to maybe around 22-23k. Epic belts are fairly cheap and can all give HP and have a defense slot. That LS can keep you topped up on health, but not if you get one shotted by mobs.

As for encounter powers, you've got two options. The first is generally the best: blow up everything. Put COI on tab since you're Thaum. Take Shard, Steal Time and Sudden Storm. Start out an encounter by moving close but don't aggro the mobs. Summon the shard but don't push it. Then use COI and when they start to run towards you push the shard as they group up in a line. Then use ST and while they're stunned, reposition and use SS.

The other option is to use control powers. Put CS on tab, take Shard, ST and EF. Again summon the shard outside of aggro range, CS the toughest mob and then immediately push the shard. This will usually kill all the week stuff. Sometimes there are two elite mobs which complicates things. If so, concentrate on keeping one controlled and dodge the other. Learn to time the durations of CS and EF, supplemented with ROF and ST to keep the mob from ever attacking you. As a thaum, you could substitute COI for ST at a loss of control but for faster fights.

For boss fights, which is basically all the artifact quest is, always kill the weak stuff before you go after the big stuff. Not everything will always aggro on you together, so try to stay on one side of the room until you've cleared everything out. Use powers like ST, IT and SS that don't have to be aimed to avoid having trouble targeting things other than the elite mob. Once you've killed the weaker mobs, the elites really aren't a lot of trouble if you watch their attacks. Anything they can do that will really hurt you is slow and comes with a lot of warning, animations and/or red zone. Take it slow and pick them apart.

Try this stox rotation, in this order - coi, chillstrike on mastery, shard, steal time, opressive force if it's up, dodge repeat. Everything should be dead by then.

As others have said, stack 1000 defence, and try for lifesteal at about 7 or 8%. Get high vizier armor by running dungeons with the legit channel.
No idea what my toon is now.

Honestly I had no idea how to answer your question the first time I saw it.

I have never had any problems with any of the solo quests as a Wizard. I grant you I'm much higher geared nowadays. But even back then, I was able to wipe through mobs without a thought.

One hint I can give you though... and it applies to all lower level wizards is to put Chill Strike in your Tabbed key. That's your mastery slot. It is the best beginning AoE you're ever going to get at those levels. Later you get Steal Time, Shards, and if Spellstorm you get Sudden Storm. If you're an MoF you get Fanning the Flames for your Tabbed key.

All of those spells will help you rip through the lower content things.

Just remember... you're a Mage... don't mess around with your At Will powers like Magic Missile... use all your encounter powers first. Your mouse buttons are your last resort... not your first.

That is the true power of the CW in this game.

Though, if you got the storm pillar damage boost, you could setup a shard, zap em for a damage buff, then go bowling.

You know I actually tried that on Preview. With the changes they were making to Storm Pillar, and after seeing how effective Scortching Burst was, I did a quick rebuild to try to test that configuration.

But I could not determine any damage increase on other spells from that feat. It did affect Storm Pillar, but does not appear to affect other spells that I could ascertain. So its either broken or it never affected other spells cast anyway, or the damage was so slight it could not be determined without major amounts of testing.

I did change my spells but I did not put points in Sudden Storm. Anything I can use until I can afford a respec?

Edit: With the new changes, my CW is fun to play again. Can run both campaigns though without dying and have even gotten 2 purples!! Thanks to the great crew here in the Library

one question, how can I add life steal and Defense as there are no slots for defense in my gear

Well, there should be at least one (in your chest piece). Belts often come with def slots, too, and you can get def-slotted rings.

Also, a boatload of rings/belts/neck pieces come with lifesteal anyway, so you should get these.

My (fairly) scrub-geared CW has life steal on her gear from a Demonweb Wrap (cloak), Belt of Arachnid Mastery (has defense slot like all epic belts), two Surgeon's Band rings, and Lord's Talisman of the Dark. All of these were bought for under their salvage value so I can get my money back if I replace them. Shop after Dungeon Delves ends for the best deals. Under 6k is what you want for the accessories, under 8k for the off hand.

The Thayan Zealot equipment you can get in the Dread lairs all has life steal on it too, but the accessories are really bad for stacking specific stats. These are your rock-bottom budget items for main hand, torso, and head slots, since with a little luck, you can collect them all for free.

If you go tunic/trousers instead of shirt/pants, those have a little life steal too, depending on how good of items you can afford. Far better to go for the level 40 blue ones with an enchant slot (offense in top, defense in bottoms) than level 60 purple ones without.

When learning to play my CW, I am using Shield. This gives me a lot more damage mitigation to survive as I get my stats, GS and skills improved. Take the training wheels off when you are comfortable in your skills and have a rotation planned.
