The problem with need is that some items for some classes are worth a LOT more than the best items for other classes.
What they really need (besides greed only) is pooled auctions. Instead of greed runs, let every item either be salvaged on the spot and AD split or put up for auction and tagged to be split amongst the members of the group when it sells. Everyone put in the work to get the items, why not fairly split everything if it's a "greed" run.
Wouldn't making any NEEDED item bound, non-salvageable and unsellable fix this? (Or even make them purely character-bound so you can't just NEED for an item for your companions.)

Yes, but, it doesn't help with the fact that in say 1 out of 10 runs a 700K item might drop and 1 out of the 5 team members will get it.
An automated pooled auction would be the best solution. This way all 5 members get to split it and no one is left steaming that they did a ton of work over 10 runs and 1 lucky sob in the group won the 700K item.

Try to get a regular group of people to run with and agree to do split runs on expensive items. Essentially have 1 person sell the item then do some math to figure an equal amount of profit for everyone. Have the other members put up an item in the AH for you to buy and then they get their cut that way. Sadly, this only works with people you trust and is highly, highly unlikely to work in /lfg.
As for an automated option, what if it doesn't sell? Does it disappear into the abyss or does it get sent to one of the players that most likely has no contact with the other members of that party?

It can always get posted with a starting bid of 1 and an input buyout price.
Having read through this thread, I now understand why I've never, ever won anything by rolling Greed! I also understand now why it sometimes seemed to me that one player would 'win' 99% of the rolls, although I'm not sure why nobody mentions it in /P.
Speaking as a non-guilded, 100% pugger, I long ago came to the conclusion that the Need button was - heh - unnecessary. It never occurred to me that I was being naive about everything. And I say that as a 40 year-old who's played countless mmogs of all kinds! Oh well. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable Needing on class-usable items by default though. Eh.
