Woot, w00t or whoot?
Hello my fellow gamers. I am currently doing research for my sociolinguistics class this semester on gaming language and I hope you will be able to help me out by answer the below questions.
I am studying the word woot, whoot, w00t.
What does woot mean to you?
Do you use it outside of gaming world? If so in casual speech or on a more professional level?
How often do you play the game?
20 hours or more a week
15 - 20 hours a week
10-15 hours a week
0-10 hours a week
Is there another word out there that you use that can replace woot? IF so what is it and what does it mean? and is it used outside of he gaming world?
Are you male or female?
Age group (optional)
15-20
20-30
30-40
40 and beyond.
My main is Emmaline a cleric. I was an alpha tester... I love this game...just wish school didn't interfere with game time...sigh! Oh well...
Thanks!
Emmaline

1- To me it is like a celebration word. Goes in the same category as "Horay!"
2- Yes I use it outside of the game, but only around other nerds xD
3- PLay over 20 hours a week. A LOT over lol
4- See #1 for word replacement
5- Male and age 20-30
Hope this helps

1. Celebratory word, both as an expression of pleasure at individual accomplishment or congratulations to someone else.
2. I do use this word casually outside gaming. I would also say it to a colleague, but not a client, except the younger ones I know fairly well (I work with nerdy people).
3. Over 20 hours a week, if I can get away with it.
4. Any "cheer" type word will do here. Hooray, yay, yes! Many of these terms are in wider use outside of gaming.
5. Female, 30-40.
1. Wow i never knew the true meaning of WOOT until this topic I thought it is some warped form of the word "what" lol. I don't use it
2. Therefore i don't use it outside the game.
3. I play over 20 hours a week.
4. -/ Outside gaming world i just use some generic words everyone knows.
5. I am female, age group 20-30

1) w00t! = " yes ! Epic loot!/ I just killed a guy in PvP from Lemonade stand"
2) never. It would be socially isolating, like actually saying "LoL" in a conversation. Even amongst fellow geeks it should only ever be considered with extreme sarcasm. It makes me cringe when I hear it!
3) 15-20 hours per week
4) usually a plain "Yess!" Sometimes punching the air, although my work with substance misusers and prisoners rarely affords me any epic loot...
5) Male 30-40

1) Synonym for "hooray," "yay," "whee," "huzzah," "good job/awesome" when used as a response to what someone has done, etc.
2) No. Mostly I use "woo" instead anyway, which I do use IRL occasionally but not often.
3) 0-10 hours a week, school and work also interfere with my game time.
4) The things for #1 pretty much cover this, and yes, they're used IRL.
5) Female.
6) 20-30.
1. Celebratory word
2. I have used it outside of gaming in the past but generally in a very superficial way. Lately...no.
3. play time varies, can be as low as 10 hours to as much as 40 hours a week
4. There are so many other words that can replace woot, so...
5. male, 30-40.
