Request: Make the Ioun Stone capable of...

... TRANSMUTATION!

First of all, the stone's looks are very underwhelming - and we all know that is it the best companion in the game for "serious" players. Nobody is looking for people with any other companion than an Augment pet when they are looking for players to form a party to do dungeons or anything that requires efficiency.

The stone looks like a magical thing, and it would make sense that it can change its form. If not at-will (let's say, make it its ability with its level 30 rank upgrade), make it cost some money like every other transmutation process. The idea would be that if you own a different pet, the Stone can assume its form.

In the first case, it would only make people much happier about leveling their stone to an Epic. 750k AD for some 100 stats (which are hitting DR for most good players anyway) is really bad; it is completely pointless to level it. But the main reason is obviously to add some much needed companion variety to the game. When you do these new events and allow people to get new companions, most people won't ever use them because they have invested a lot on their Augment companion which is much stronger than any other pet. By implementing this idea, all these new event companions would be seen a lot more. Remember the last time you saw one of those blue-flames Skeleton Dog when doing content? Yeah, me neither. I'm afraid it is going to be exactly the same with the new Pig. Honestly, almost 100% of the time I see either a Cleric companion, a Stone, or a Cat. This must not be very rewarding for the devs who put effort into designing other companions either.

Please support this idea!

The way it has been going, I can bet that Cryptic will wait for everyone to get their stone enchanted with the best enchantments, ancient items fully slotted, then nerfed their stats to render them completely useless (like they did with the Stalwart Bulwark set for example)...

HAMSTER everyone who invested millions AD to equip them in the process...

There indeed are notes by Cryptic saying that they'll try to make the non-augment pets more attractive. Most of us understood that the devs would give them either better stats or some IA. But yes, just nerfing good and hard the cat and ioun will make everyone happy about pet balance.

You're wrong about that. I have the Cat on my CW and Stone on other characters. There is no way for the Cat to be better simply because the belt slot offers less stats than the Icon slot on the Stone. Some people also say the Cat can die sometimes (though this has never happened to me). They could do it with the Cat too, but they would have to change the Cat to a magical sort. With the Stone, it makes much more sense.

Actually, my idea is that the companion the Stone is transmuted into becomes full-sized, except it has the Stone turning around its head instead of yours. Otherwise, they are the exact same replica as the pet you are assuming the visuals from. This way you'd know if someone really has a Pig or it's a Stone assuming the Pig's looks, for instance.

Everyone? You mean those people who couldn't afford to get Augment pets? Yes, maybe. This is a god-awful idea, though. These pets are unique, useful, and deserve to remain powerful.

I don't know where you got that terrible idea from. Nerfing my Ioun Stone would make me VERY unhappy. The other companions need a buff to make them more attractive... tbh I think that they are fine as they are. Non-combat companions are about the only companions worth using during boss fights since the others just die. This should be intended.

Whoosh... that is not just the sound of an ioun stone, but also of a joke about pet nerfs flying right over people's heads.

(For those who need it spelled out - because "balancing" is always addressed by nerfing something, right?)

So far, that's been the experience with everything they "balanced"? TR, GWF, GF stalwart bulwark, etc...

Wait...The nerfing of stones to make other companions more "attractive" is coming!!! Mark my words.

But I would rather have a tiny flaming blue dog floating around my head ;)

Actually you can itemize better with a cat. The belt provides better stats for optimization (At least for CW)

Yeah I'm satisfied with the Cat on my CW. But elsewhere I think it's always better to have the Stone. Anyway, that's not what this thread is about! Would love if the Cat also could do this as a level 30 ability, though.

They dont need to offer a transmute for the stone just to add the cosmetic variation that companions get as they level up.

Ioun stone goes from small blue orbital to small blue orbital to small blue orbital regardless of how fancy it's name is.

If they want to make other companions attractive they could give them an ai that works to move them out of aoe or have a basic attack, retreat command. Biggest reason not to use a minion that isnt the stone or cat is that they are generally a liability.

I found it sad and funny when they fixed (or tried to fix, cant remember if it worked) that the stone cast a humanoid shadow. I thought that was the coolest (even spookiest) thing. I had this little blue stone circling around me, and it somehow cast the shadow of a man. I don't think they should have tried to fix that. I think they should have made it an option that it casts the shadow of whatever you choose as your totem spirit, or whatever. I also don't like that it circles my head.. reminds me of the cartoon animations sometimes used to make people look woozy or drunk. I'd like it better if it worked more like a magic user's orb.. (which I don't understand anyway. Guess it's a 4th edition thing..

And just weighing in.. I have the stone each on a GF, a DC, and my TR. My CW has the cat. My CW is very sad not to have chosen a stone. And my GWF is quite annoyed that his owner won't buy him a stone and is making him do with an Orcish Wolf. XD
