If I add the following Runestone to a Companion, "Training Runestone Rank 3", with the attribute "+2.5 Experience Gain", do I get the experience gain, or my companion? (My companion is a Cleric at max lvl 15)

I think it is only the companion. You could check by adding a cheap Tier 1 runestone to your companion and see if your XP bonus on your character sheet changes. If it does, just overwrite the Tier 1 (not remove) with a Tier 3.

Can't overwrite runestones, but a rank 1 training is really cheap to remove.

My understanding is the XP gain is for companions only, thus their only use is for levelling up companions you don't really use actively... which is why they're the least desirable of all runes and enchants (see market prices).

Got worried when I read this so I just checked in-game and it worked for upgrading a companion level 1 HP rune to a level 2.

Huh, well I guess I was misinformed when told you couldn't do that. Serves me right for not testing.
