‘This quest is a triumph, 5 out of 3 stars!’ just doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
Which is exactly why the rating system is broken. Read Apoc's thread. It needs addressed. End of story.
Everything for foundry work should be a positive experience, period. Folks who don't agree with that are folks who like to cause grief or suffering to other players... probably a level 60 griefer in Stranglethorn Vale I'm betting.
If people shouldn't give 'bad ratings' (1, 2 stars) but instead just PM feedback as you guys suggest, then 3 stars would be the new worst rating. And by that logic, we soon get to 5 stars or nothing. Come on...
In essence I agree.
But what we are desperately lacking in the Foundry is a "Beta Publish" phase - I would suggest a phase where comments could be left, but not star ratings, so that Authors can put out content that needs to be played to be tested in a way that the very, very broken "Author" build can not.
So when something is first put out if it would score lower than 3 I refrain from rating it.
If after a few reworks and the Author saying they are happy with it as it is if it still worth a 2 I'll give one.
But we need that "trouble-shooting beta phase" because the Author build is appallingly limited.
PS: For the record, that's partly why I started adding Beta to the Build Number on my Foundries, so that it was clear, especially to other Authors, that it wasn't considered "release ready".
We are authors, not reviewers. While our advice to other authors is better than the average player, our reviews can be pretty unfair. We tend to see things that the average player would miss and put a greater value on minor mistakes than a average player would.
Authors can review work. Let's take a very successful author as an example. Steven King often will review books written by other authors. He will never leave a bad review though. He has been caught saying things about other authors, and got some bad press, but that is not a review. If he doesn't like a book, he will just not review it. That is how an author reviews other authors. If you play a quest and then leave a really bad review, as an author yourself, I feel you have crossed a line, and you deserve the backlash.
Now if you truly feel you must leave your opinion, and that opinion must be your honest opinion, then stop creating quests and become a full time critic. As long as you are an author though you should respect other authors, even the ones you feel are bad authors. There are plenty of other people to rate them down. You don't need to do so as well.

Sounds like a nice guy/gal. They wished me well and offered to review more quests. The comment isn’t super helpful, but very few are because of the char limit for reviews. Hopefully they’d take the time to drop by my thread or the mail and leave more details.
What, you’d be offended by that? Seriously?

. . . . . I am always grateful for feedback and when I am editing my foundry, I usually spend a lot of time reading my reviews to see what I think I may need to change, add or remove. Unfortunately, additional installments to my Campaign are on hold while I do as I planned from the beginning, experience all the lore of the game first and then add the rest of the Campaign to fit within other parts of the world players travel to while leveling up.

I would never leave a review like that. I wouldn't bother. If it was an accurate review, than there will be others who leave a review like that. A bad review from me would only add to the authors discouragement and he would quit rather than try to improve, or he will become angry and not listen to my advice. If it was not an accurate review, than it would become apparent when others rate the quest high and I did not. Either way it would not be to my best interests or anyone's else's interests to leave a review like that. A review like that can only do harm. I would rather send an email to the author with my suggestions on how to improve it.

Let us get a couple of things straight, since political correctness and social compliance are so rampant among the Foundry community. An anonymous one star review is not feedback. Nor is a two star review with a comment like, "This quest is stupid." I really wish Foundry authors would quit acting like sheeple and thanking people for these types of reviews. Go ahead and get mad, blow up on them, express your true feelings with honesty. Otherwise you are lying to yourself, and inviting griefers to continue trolling the Foundry for the rest of their net-dwelling existences. If someone leaves me a bad review but it has useful feedback, that's great. I've gotten some really good ideas from some bad reviews. But just saying "This quest sucks." does not help someone to improve, unless they're like those emotionally masochistic body-builders who like someone to scream and curse at them while lifting weights.

I agree with you in part. A review is not a critique. Therefor, a review can be a simple "This quest sucks". A critique is more in depth. "This is not a good quest and here is why." A review is public feedback whereas a critique is more private. A review is meant more for other players rather than to help the author. That is why I prefer to go directly to the author and point things out rather than to leave a bad review. I feel a personal critique is more helpful to the author than leaving a bad review.
I do understand your point though.

I agree with you and Wuhsin here. There is a HUGE difference between helpful critique and public troll 1 star review. Those who keep saying on here that they'd be happy that someone gave a 2 star review that said "hated it, fix everything" is kidding themselves and actually being disrespectful to the other authors here. Of course we'd take offense to that, especially if you're already aware that its bull **** when you had a 5 star review directly beneath it that says "really well done, nicely thought out, great maps, very balanced". So yeh, a 2 or 1 star troll RATING that says that would be exactly that... trolling, griefing, trying to bring down someone else, etc.
Don't know why this continues to even be talked about, public rating system is dumb for this type of thing, it should all be done in a positive way instead of negative. Its not that hard.
Imo the only maps that deserve 1-2 stars are the ones you can't finish to rate anyway. OR the ones where the Author misleads the player. Example: A solo labelled map that 10 minutes in is actually tuned for a groups only. Heck, I gave 3 stars to a map I had to restart 3 times before I could finish. (Monsters were placed to close to the doorways. Was in combat so I couldn't activate the doors.)
The rating system will always be flawed. Because everyone rates the maps from their own perspective. You have people rating clearly labeled hack and slash maps poorly because they don't have a story. And others one-starring story maps because they don't have enough fighting. Some people would never give a mission a perfect 5 star rating while others would never give a 1 star. The best we can hope for is that maybe it will all balance out.
Personally I don't see how giving someone 2 stars could ever be called encouraging. No matter what you typed to go along with it. I would have been upset, but I wouldn't have bothered to respond. I would have just assumed you were either a troll or ignorant of how the system works.
There is a HUGE difference between helpful critique and public troll 1 star review.
Yes. There is. It's unfortunate many authors seem bent on widening their definition until the only one left is themselves, a lone avenger, fighting against an unjust world of jealous trolls.
I explained myself quite adequately. Why do people keep insisting on using variations of 'YOU ARE DISRESPECTING ALL THE AUTHORS!' It was funny the first time, now it's just plain absurd. Do not presume to represent other authors and tell me how they feel, they are perfectly able to do that themselves.

That makes absolutely no sense.
You begin by agreeing with ellindar that there is a HUGE difference, and then go on to say that authors are expanding their definitions of one or both of the terms. And somehow by expanding those definitions they become some lone avenger?
So if you agree that there is a huge difference between the two terms, how are they expanding the definitions of the two terms? In what way are the exaggerating? Why would they need to expand the definitions? How much expansion would they need to do to become a lone avenger?
Also, when you start by saying that many authors do this to become lone avengers, that is kind of a mystery to me. If it began as many authors, what did they do? Did they have a fight to the death to see which one would become the lone avenger? Or did you misstate yourself and mean that one author widened his definition until he was joined by the Hulk, Captain America, and Thor?
I am sorry if I just missed your point. Please expand your points a bit so I can follow you.

I don't see myself as a lone avenger. More like, I feel that I am the author the Foundry deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So I won't get plays, because I don't need them. I'll get one star reviews, because I can take them. I'm a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Dark Author.....

We are not some elitist club of gentle story-tellers who sit in a circle and hold each other's hands. We're human beings, flawed and fallible. Each of us have an ego of sorts. We thrive on positive feedback, and we all feel a tad pin prick when we see that 1-3 star rating. It's hard work to make a foundry mission. Entire weeks can drift away into just one, and to receive 2-3 stars on your first mission would be fairly brutal to a new foundry author.
He poured hours and days into his work of art, and you gave him 2 and 3 stars. That's not really 'encouragement'. That's a "Welcome to the harsh world of Foundry Authoring, ****!"
I always give 4-5 stars on new foundry author content. Why? Because who the hell cares if my single 5 star rating skews his actual rating? That 5 star encourages him and makes him feel like he's doing well, and should keep getting better. Over time, my 5 star rating will fade away and his ego will be better prepared to take a bruising down the road.
PS. This thread now has over 1k views. Does that say something about the need for foundry drama? Why don't the new foundry quests asking for review threads have 1k views?

It's normal. A lot of authors can't take constructive criticism, and this whole 'don't vote if my rating is low' is just absurd.
Frankly, I'm starting to find the author community appalling.
Feel free to run my missions and if you honestly think they rate 1 or 2 stars, go vote 1 or 2 stars.
Yes, thank you SO much for your honest opinion, your constructive criticism is SO helpful. This quest has only has two 1 star reviews, both left by foundry authors. Haters goin hate?

You wanna know how I got these 1 stars? Well....my reviewers were....trolls...and jealous fiends. And one night they go CRAZIER than usual. They see my quest in the Best list and they don't like that....not....one...bit! So, with me online editing they take the quest, messaging me "LOL" while they do it. But if it's Bill's Tavern, it must be indicative of the poor sensibilities of the mass audience and the failures of the 15 minute system, right? You can't have it both ways.
And to corn on the cob, I never once said my stuff was lore. In fact, I especially warn people like you to stay away because things like humor and including basic plot elements seem to be anathema to you.
Finally, I obviously wasn't hiding my feelings about his quest so I'm not sure how you can say that I was "busted." That is my opinion which I made known. I will say that I was fairly generous as objectively his quest is worth a zero, but I gave him an extra bonus point for trying.
