I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, or it is intended, but it seems crafting training (except leadership) is very slow due to lack of resources.
For both of my toons, both have 10+ leadership, while only lvl4 for the other crafting skill (mailsmith for GWF, and leatherwork for TR). I simply don't have enough resources to train them fast enough. I don't have enough simple leather to train leatherworking, nor do I have enough charcoal or ore to train mailsmithing.
Did I miss something, or was this intended? How do you people train these crafting skills?

Charcoal can be purchased at the trade supply vendors I think. I worked on other skills than leadership but supplies were limited. I was spending more time on the low lvl projects to make this skin, make that skin etc than it was worth. Looking at the rewards nothing thrilled me either. All out leadership for all of my toons until I really get bored Can't seem to give up a profession slot for lw etc when I can come out far better on leadership

Well, charcoal, like rock salt/thread/etc, is just bought from the profession vendor.
Meanwhile, the basic resources (ore, hides, cloth scraps) are gathered via a very short project and then processed (ore -> rings & plates, hides -> leather) by another one. So, to build up a supply of that stuff, run those projects while you're playing (so you can refresh them as they finish), and then do the longer projects (actually making things) when you're logging off.

I generally buy raw mats like ore hides and scraps on the AH. Generally there is a listing for a reasonable price. I also use the mail system to transfer mats from alts to crafting pc's.

Did you not notice the 2 tasks "Gather simple pelts" and "Cure simple pelts"?
You can gather and refine the resources that way.
All non-leadership trades have similar tasks. They are all much faster to level to 20 than leadership is.
You have to gather your own resources or you can buy them at the auction house. Took me 41 days of daily 8-12 hours of "working" to level up Mailsmithing to rank 20 (current max).

Yeah I know about those lower gather tasks too, but what I miss are the other resources needed to make the bigger components like chests and arms, etc. Things like the green items. I don't see these dropping very often from nodes when I can find a node of late. Just doing the gather stuff over and over again resultes in only about 5 xp. As you get higher those greens and blues are needed more and more for decent experience gains.

I'm sure you have an equivalent of the mithral ornate pants that platesmithing & mailsmithing have, they are 500xp/hour. Granted you need to collect the ore & make plates or rings and scales first (and whatever stuff for the other two paths), but they need no green stuff to make - nice & cheap.

That's because they want you to buy and spend zen on profession packs. It will help if you buy pelts or whatever, and do the mass crafting. Forget anything using residuum or the other mats.
TL : DR? Then don't waste my time responding.

you can get some of that green stuff from skill nodes, some occasionally from leadership chests
but to XP you really only need to make shirts/pants which require no residuum or other uncommon stuff, only mats you can gather and refine with the tradeskill
coal and charcoal are purchased at the tradeskill merchant
going through the crafting progression for some +1 +2 etc pieces can certainly give you a nice boost in XP, but it costs residuum. If you don't have any or don't want to AH any, then just don't make that stuff, it isn't strictly necessary.

I just took a look at the pants that'll use the third-tier crafting materials, and... ouch... using resources that are worth 5 silvers to make an item that'll sell for a grand 54 coppers? Ouch ouch. And not very logical or balanced, designers.
Not as painful as seeing people AHing their crafted magic items for less than it would have cost them to acquire the resources to make them though....

Besides, I think that's what leadership is for (intended or not): If you got no ressources, you just do leadership tasks.
