This is probably the most amusing thread I have ever read in my entire life. I'd like to thank every single one of you for your participation in the 2013 annual redundant argument convention.

Why?
WHY is the Foundry down?
A brief summary of what the problem is would quench our thirst for knowledge and probably allow us to commiserate with you.

Alas! My sadness is expansive- the foundry is still down.

But Sadness is weak to Hope Damage, and my hope that this will be resolved quickly is strong.

Thank you all so much for bearing with us while we work on this issue, and thank you as well for the awesome feedback.

We'll keep you posted as new information becomes available.

In the mean time, I'm writing out my next foundry mission on paper- including stick figure fight scenes!

It's such a comfort to us regular Foundry authors to know an administrator is working on another quest to compete with ours.. In case you couldn't tell, that last sentence was intended to be a bit sarcastic. I'm sorry, but if a local gas station had a name drawing contest for a hundred dollars worth of gas, and the girl who worked at the register won, it would probably cause that gas station to lose the business of everyone who paid a dollar to put their name in the hat, whether she paid for her entry and won fairly or not. That's my opinion on the Foundry. If the community mods/admins/devs all want to make quests, that's understandable. Making quests is freaking awesome. But having us regular authors compete against them for a spotlight or place in the Best list is just a bad idea. Regardless of whether it's really fair, skeptical people such as myself will have their doubts. Especially when every employee seems to be successful, and very few regular players are. If it's so important to the employees that their quests get played before ours, let them make a new tab for employees to feature their quests, instead of having them win a spotlight every other week, or placing them in the Best list. Then us regular Foundry authors can be ensured that our competition is more fair. I can't necessarily prove the system is rigged, but you can't prove it isn't right now either. It's all about speculation, so lets make sure things at least LOOK fair, whether they are or not.

Take your time fixing this, please. I would rather have you guys thoroughly review this issue than do a quick-fix only for it to break down again later. Thanks for all of your hard work.

What he said. While you're at it, add some REAL bosses (DRAGONS!) and some gelatinous cubes (for dzogen!) and fix the Goldilocks reward system (for great justice!) because the only way now you can justify the Foundry being offline as long as it has is if you're doing more than simply slapping a band-aid on it.

I can't agree. The first thing you see/hear when coming into the Neverwinter web site is a video that's first line is Neverwinter is a game designed by D&D fans for D&D fans. Now I've never really been a D&D fan but that explains why they would want to do just this. Just because someone works for a company dose not mean they should not enjoy what the company dose, in this case a game.
If anything there should just be a star or symbol to show that it is an employee, the only problem with this is people may assume they will be better than others which may not be the case and could be misleading.
This is not a competition and given time the people that stand out will be recognised wether they are employees or just gamers, and as a gamer that can only be a good thing as the rated content will be better.

I love me some Master Yoda. This isn't about me hating Cryptic/PWE employees though. Did you ever watch cartoons on Saturday morning as a kid? If so, you might remember one of the thousands of sweepstakes they used to have. In every single one of those thousands of sweepstakes, at the end they had a disclaimer saying that employees of the tv company weren't eligible. Know why? Because if a company has a contest, and an employee of that company wins it, people will say the contest was rigged, regardless of whether it was or not. The same goes for the lottery, gas drawing contests which local gas stations here have often, and most other contests. If they're gonna have contests for the Foundry, then have their employees of theirs win about half the contests, sooner or later people will begin to scream "FIXED!" and believe me, I'm not the first in this case.

This is why I had the idea for them getting a special tab of their own to feature their quests. They do certainly deserve it. But I just don't agree with them competing with us for spots in the Best/Spotlight sections. Just, no. Even if it is somehow fair, most people won't be able to believe it. Let their quest sit at the top of the New list a while at least instead of just having it go straight from For Review to Featured overnight...

But this is why there is a voting system. If an employee makes one and it's rubbish and people vote honestly then it may be that some get more views but why dose that matter? They will also get more low ratings and over time it will balance. If you place barriers then you divide them, people may only look at the ones done by developers. I don't really understand why it is so important to have views. I'm just happy I can do it at all. It is a nice concept that has not been done well before in my opinion. At least not that I have seen. As long as I can play mine and share them with my friends I'm happy. If people like them and they get popular then that's a bonus.

My main concern is that the voting system isn't the only thing driving their success. Maybe I'm being too paranoid, but seriously, I've never heard of a company that has contests then lets their employees win those contests repeatedly. A gas station couldn't pull that off. One here did that a couple of years ago, had a gas drawing, and gave the prize to their cashier. That place went out of business.

Your not paranoid your probably correct but it will balance over time. It is just the nature of business.
An example is the Wii, when it was first launched they didn't make enough this was not unintentional they did it so it would cause more hype and people would talk about it. The first people to get them were Nintendo employees then all the people that worked in the distrabution distribution lastly the people that worked in the shops, these would buy more than one and then sell them on places like ebay this left none for retail. It may not be fair but it is business and like it or not Neverwinter is a business. Why shouldn't the people that work here have first bragging rights. That's all it is.

There are Foundry quests by PWE employees that are not identified as such ingame, I identified one such earlier in this thread. Even if the top quests are squeaky clean (and I have no reason to believe otherwise), the fact that PWE employees quests are not identified as such is an inherent problem.

As far as what can happen, people can look to the history of games like Eve Online where a guild that turned out to be led by Eve devs , and the dev gave the guild the equivalent of billions of AD.

I think the fact they are employees gives them enough bragging rights. They're probably living their child-hood dream by doing this. One positive thing I can say is it at least shows their interest in the Foundry, and increases our chances of getting more content for it. What eats me though is they basically are trumping lots of great authors like Vaelic and Zahinder every time they nab one of those spots. I can't say it's unfair, but it doesn't look fair from a regular player's perspective, and people will always be looking for a conspiracy, so it makes the devs look sort of shady to cynical, paranoid people such as myself... Which goes back to why lotteries/sweepstakes/contests usually disqualify employees from winning them in their disclaimers.

Here's my big concern.

3.5 days in and they still:

1) Haven't told us anything at all about what is wrong.

2) Haven't told us what they are doing to fix it.

3) Haven't come close to even thinking about mentioning an ETA for the restoration of the Foundry.

Taken together these three facts lend credence to the claims they shut it down to prevent exploitative content being made during the bonus loot event.

The sum total of what they have told us so far is "We're sorry we are bad at our jobs, but hey, we are bad at our jobs".

There is no sustainable business model anywhere in the world that would class this as acceptable customer service.

We are being treated like mushrooms - kept in the dark and fed on HAMSTER.

This isn't good enough.

You treat your playerbase with this kind of contempt at your peril.

I was really enjoying the Foundry. I was just about ready to buy some extra character slots so I could run my Foundry content with more different classes and see how things play out, and so I could offer reviews of other's Foundry content from different perspectives. About the only money I could justify spending on this game was for those slots. Not now, I'd honestly rather spend that money on a month's sub for WoW, at least that game works.

That is indeed a very big concern. I was about ready to splurge on a mount and maybe a bag. Not now. Besides, the mounts they are currently offering aren't that great. Different variations of wargs and bears. Meh.

I was in process of doing my first foundry quest, this makes me sad :( Its meant to be a long one and I'm still in process of understanding foundry functions. Do hope it comes back on soon, though also I would just like to know what the problem is, like what was even going wrong that prompted it being shut off...you know, just for knowings sake, I've no dreams of helping with solutions. :p

I guess I'm in the minority but I really don't mind it being down for a few days right now to avoid any other possible exploits which could lead to another rollback. I would rather a careful go ahead at this point. Whatever is wrong they've been kind enough to come in and let us know they are still working on it. I would be happier if they were a bit more up front about the issue, but possibly its one they'd rather not have public as it could be exploited still. In which case I completely understand. (but would rather they just said that too lol)

Wouldn't it make more sense to just not have the double loot thing if they have to punish the whole Foundry community to do it?

That's funny.

I'd have to admit that wow was truly a great game but it lost the plot long ago and it's so old. If not this then Age of Wushu, SWTOR, Chivelry and many more games are better than wow imo.

However, remember that This is only Beta. Blizzard have had there own problems too in the past.

If this problem or others are there when the game is out properly then I would agree but do you not think it is not worth waiting? Is it not only four days?
