Scammers

Hi all,
I was just happily trading keys for gold a few minutes ago and got scammed for the first time by a "certain player."

He was doing some sort of weird thing where when you click accept, nothing happens- it usually says "you accept" or something, but in this case it didn't. He would "click accept" as well and the money would leave and the trade finished. Obviously, he was doing something dodgy as I would still have my key and he would still have my money. He was pretty convincing with it, but then he asked me to click accept first, so I did. But then I lagged out for a second or so, he took his money out AFTER i had clicked accept and he ran off, ignoring me straight after. Of course, I followed him around after preventing him from doing around 4 further trades in which he would again scam someone and I told a few traders I knew to ignore him.

From the responses, it looks like we are completely powerless in doing anything against these people, so I want to offer some friendly advice to anyone who finds themselves in a situation like mine. If you are trading with someone, and it takes longer than usual, or you think they are doing something dodgy, say something on zone chat or at least keep an eye on what people are saying (apparently someone else was already trying to warn others but I didn't see his message) there!

Happy playing :)

You should completely remove the name from your post. Naming and Shaming isn't allowed.

There could be any number of people using the same character name and without their @handle you're basically bashing them all at once.

It could be worse. In zone chat, we was giving out the scammers phone number (or at least what he claimed was the guy's phone number).

Anything I did was in the spur of the moment- I was getting messages from around 8+ people who had also been scammed and they had been doing research on where this guy is from. Turns out he has been on several other MMOs scamming people, and apparently scammed $3000 worth of stuff from players on WoW and was boasting about it on his guild's website... Pretty sickening if you ask me.

Trading keys for Gold with a anon and you're pretty much setting yourself up for a scam.

Other than giving an object directly to a player - I'd stick to "official" means of trade for *EVERY* transaction with other players, such as the Auction House or in-game email. Any other method is too high a risk for scamming or even innocent "accidents" to screw stuff up.

Especially with anyone you don;t intimately know very well.

Just my own too sense, your own mileage may vary. :)

Rule #1: if someone tells you to hit accept first, immediately cancel the trade

Rule#2: if you even think something is off, immediately cancel the trade

The trade system on MMOs is set up so that you really have to go out of your way to be a victim. Whether it's being too trusting or just not paying attention.

The trade box is way safer that in game email, where you have to trust that the person will send you payment. The trade box is perfectly safe if you don't let your guard down. Just treat all people you trade with as if they might be scammers and you'll never get scammed.

Sorry to hear that some1 took advantage of you, that scam is one of the oldest runescape scam from my experience, people used to swap items and tricking you into accept an empty box or iron platebody instead of runeplatebody :D.. good times...
Just be careful, and if you are the seller dont accept first.

that is what I usually do, except in this case, there really was something weird happening with the trade box itself. He would click accept and so would I, but the box would not say "you accept" for me. The box usually goes green then says "you accept" except in this case, only the outlining box around the items you put in went green. Also, he clicked accept and so did I- it said he accepted the trade- then AFTER i clicked accept, I lagged excessively and he somehow took back his money and the key. To be honest, I'm glad it was only 1 key that got scammed off me since I haven't actually put any funds into this game, my main concern is that this person has found a way to make off with both parties items in the trade.

Pretty much this. Hit cancel, put them on your ignore list, Press H, go to Request GM Help, and Report Behavior.

That's pretty funny. So the logical conclusion of this would be two players that want to trade set it up in the trade window, then neither one will click accept first.

You know, I bet that's what all the companions in PE are doing.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

Trade window scams are pretty basic, was a big deal in diablo and a number of other games as well.

Unless there is an actual exploit, its kind of like street magic. They make you think you lagged but actually used a program or macro keyboard or something to swap the items or remove the items before accept, and the victim ends up hitting accept twice (thinking it lagged) then realizes he got taken..... Sometimes they swap in a similar icon but junk item. Sometimes they remove it entirely.

It would be good to know if there is an exploit or not, but until then, I have to guess its just the classic swindle and the answer is "never hit accept twice, close the window and start over every time it seems to act odd". And the captain obvious: anyone that insists you hit accept before them is up to something.

Just got scammed as well :( Is there some thread where scammers can get reported? Anyone knows what the action of a GM will be - I have no clue how deeply they can look into the whole thing to prove me right. Can they see if he took the item out super quick and then pressed accept again and got my items?
I hope this players account will get banned forever... and all accounts that he sent mail to that are recorded at the same IP.

Contact a GM using this method if this happens again to anybody.

    http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?306422-Reporting-Exploits-The-Right-Way&highlight=report+exploits

    TO CONTACT AN IN-GAME GM:

To alert the Cryptic team of a cheater or an exploiter, press H key or the ? on the menu bar to contact a GM. Then press the BEHAVIOR button.
