Neverwinter Lore - Where to Start?

Hello All,
I am completely new to the D&D scene. Being 24 years old I missed a lot of the older generation of Dungeon and Dragons Lore. The quests in Neverwinter's Beta sucked me in and for the first time in a long time, I was engrossed in the story of an mmorpg.

I would love to dig a little deeper into the characters I will come across in this game and am looking for some help =)

I have being browsing the D&D website looking at the various novels and trying to see where would be the best to get stuck in. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of lore that exists and in need of guidance as to where I should start.

If I started the R.A. Salvatore's Gauntlgrym would I be lost all together?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated,
Gav

Salvatore is always a good start. I'm a huge fan of Richard Baker novels, as well. His Blades of the Moonsea series is a great read and very easy to follow.

If you really want to go old school, find the Pool of Radiance novels.

Unfortunately, the lore is so extensive there's no easy fix for a good place to start. Think of it as a river... just jump right in, find some good stories, and keep afloat!

I'd start with the 4th Edition Forgotten Realms: Neverwinter Campaign Setting. This will not only get you up to speed on everything related to Neverwinter but will also help you in finding related books as it references novels and source material too and then you can branch off and learn more from the suggested material, novels, and supplements.

R.A. Salvatore's new Neverwinter quartet is as good a place to start as any. If you want to get some backstory for the characters involved, however, I'd really recommend starting out with his Icewind Dale Trilogy and Dark Elf Trilogy first.

We'll also have a "Recommended Reading" list up soon. :)

Thank you all for the great info,
I think ill jump in with the 4th Edition Forgotten Realms: Neverwinter Campaign Setting as suggested by Zebular and branch out from there to some of the other novels recommended.
Again thanks for the links guys, I wont be running out of reading material anytime soon =)

You could also try Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.

You could also try Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.

Yep you could but then this game (from what little I've seen of gameplay and read about it in announcements) would just pointingly glare at what isn't in this version. Other than that yes try nwn1 and 2 they are really good games. If you can find copies of them that is.
