This idea may already be implemented. But just in case not, I figured I'd bring it up. This idea with the extra drow background. They should run with this. And steal a page right out of league of legends hand book. Continue to sell skin... *coughs* backgrounds for all the races. Releases as many as you can come up with. So long as they are not to gaudy.
Just fyi a top hat and monocle is not gaudy!

If they allow pre-leveled toons, it better be a hell of a lot more than 5,000 zen. I think we all know how easy it is from past games to gear up a toon just having friends farm content with you in the party.
I would expect at least 7,500 zen. Still won't deter leveling service companies from just dropping their price to compete though. Instant gratification is one thing, but we are still in a recession for something you could 'eventually' attain on your own at your leisure.

What I plan to spend a bunch of money on is Foundry items though. Like new tilesets, items etc. I assume they'll be selling premium ones as microtransactions and if they aren't, they should. Keep making new Foundry content and people will keep buying it. And it leads to more/varied playable content.
This is the biggest P2W idea I've ever seen or heard of. Level skip in an mmo *facepalm* It's bad enough when Its in a solo game, but in an mmo absolutely not.
So your idea of winning the game is making to max level? I disagree that paying for level advancement is pay to win. In my opinion pay to win is paying for a weapon that is more powerful than one you can get through normal play. A damage boost potion that makes you do significantly more damage that you can't get in the game through normal play. I think people throw around the pay to win phrase to try to shoot down things they don't like that cost money.

Not only that, but it fills the game with people that don't know how to play their class and will be a drag on any group. Letting people skip questing or playing the game is contrary to the fundamentals of any single player or multiplayer game and letting them pay for it is letting them pay for a cheat code. I don't care if they have to grind for gear... it goes against RPGs and games in general. To top it off there's no good reason to do it in this game. The Foundry lets you play new content without having to repeat a quest twice... ever, so it wouldn't be the same grind.

I don't inspect people before letting them in groups with me, but that is mostly because I either rarely in any game make a group with random people I mostly play MMOs with people I am either in a guild with or know in real life. I would imagine if i was making a group with random people I would probably inspect their gear

So I'm thinking maybe my idea about running with the race backgrounds wasn't specific enough. So let's give an example.
People keep requesting undead stuff. So make them an undead background. They have to pay x amount of dollars and they can make their character "appear" undead, like a vampire or a lich. Also you can give them an undead companion. Any one would do really. You could even sell multiple undead companions. One for every class, and make them pay each time!

$1000+ to design a mob or item for upcoming content like in POE. Except that it has to cannon. Not sure if this would sale here though with the foundry and all. I know you can't actually design your own mob or item in foundry but it's fills that desire a little bit.
Also donation funding options for potential future content. Say Cryptic is interested in creating several different content updates. Let them "pitch" them to players who can then choose to donate towards specific projects. This helps developers see what players want and helps them to continue support for the game without sacrificing their creative vision. Cryptic would probably never work that close to the player community though but it's a nice thought.

This is where the Community and Game Staff come in to report and handle such violations. To not implement something because it "may be abused" is not a notion that sits well with me, for on that note, all MMOs and everything in Real Life should be removed from existence, for everything has the potential for abuse.
That's not the problem. The problem is Turbine doesn't consider it an abuse. It's not flagrantly offensive. It is however completely immersion breaking. It could be renamed to "Dan the Man's smasher-stick" and not be abusive but still be absolutely stupid and out of place in Middle-Earth.
Long of it short, people are dumb, say no to engraving.
