I'm not sure what DDO did so wrong in regards to "being D&D" that Neverwinter is going to get right. Is it the Foundry? Because aside from that, I'm not seeing a whole lot of difference, at least on the "being D&D" front. DDO is even a pretty faithful implementation of an actual, specific edition of D&D (my least favorite edition, grouping 3E/3.5 together, but it certainly is D&D), moreso than Neverwinter appears to be of 4E.
I'm also not sure what you mean be 15+ year old game engine. DDO is 6 years old, and features pretty radically different game play than the Everquest era. The ruleset it's based on isn't even 15 years old.
I said potentially. To me D&D is all about the immersion and story and feel, NW still has to prove itself but if these lore trailers are any indication then I think I won't be disappointed. None of that I felt in DDO no matter how hard I tried, the mechanics of the game eventually drove me away disgusted.
Caution rant...
With DDO how they handled PrEs and Epic Destinies (Epic Destinies are no not even remotely D&D, show me where one can do 10d100 or 3k dmg in the books), more of the grind grind grind till your eyes bleed, people just completely bum rush through quests, very shallow feats (feats are very cookie cutter, i.e. any melee class will follow a toughness, imp crit, thf or twf, cleaves, power attack at a minimum) and that there is no immersion whatsoever all contribute to how DDO doesn't have that D&D feel at all. New quest you plow through within a few hours and then starts the grind and people just bum rush through if they could.
/end rant
The 15+ year engine was in reference to the NWN/NWN2 engine. I dabbled in the NWN2 PWs (Persistent Worlds) of Dalelands Beyond and Baulder's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast and it just astonishes me how fans can recreate wonderful environments and really apply many feats and PrEs (thanks to the hard work of Kaedrin) and yet big companies like Turbine cannot. Those PWs really do a great job at the immersion with what they got. Granted these are RPing specific immersion but the class and feat system is there and what Turbine should have done. I mean all the feats and classes are there.... just incorporate it.
I just truly hope that Cryptic will allow players to create PWs, that will be truely amazing feature in a modern MMO.
Why don't we all wait to see what they announce in January and determine the game's future on that instead of saying how the release dates are going to fail or what quarter they must be in?
And look, they have set an announcement date, that's a big step! This means a lot of things are going to happen that month and the floodgates WILL open.
Just like SS classical "Soon..." phrase? Or how the "big news" was just the PWI acquisition than many followers could give a rats HAMSTER about?
Numerous occasions we have said "Ohhh just wait the floodgates WILL open" and yet almost every time we were left high and dry. I'll have faith when I actually see and read tangible and quality info about the game, until then call me skeptic. One can only handle so many disappointments.

Unlike before we have a specific month named even if one were to say it is indirectly named. That's a first.
All (digital, newsstand, and subscriber) copies of the issue include a key to randomly receive one of two exclusive Neverwinter horse mounts. Check page 98 for redemption instructions"
The Black Horse Mount — Feisty. Rugged. Mysterious. The medieval equivalent of a muscle car. It hates demons, but loves oats.
The White Horse Mount — Noble. Reliable. Slightly fussy. The high school quarterback of horses, and a sure friend against Neverwinter’s enemies
things are heating up....
The way this is written no wonder some are confused "modern successor to BioWare"

Gee, offering mounts with no game makes no sense. Makes you wonder if they want people to start begin playing in January perhaps?
Sort of like putting the "horse before the game..." vs. the "cart before the horse..."

Well the awesome part about this news is the long rumored mount question has been answered....the down side of that is you just know they are going to start selling copies of Andahar on the C store.

You think Plaguescarred is scary? That song is the worst of all drugs! It literally corrupts your mind and body into unspeakable things! Don't believe me? Look what they used to look like! By the time we found out, he clearly was losing his mind already.
I mean sure, we were able to get him basic work, but how his talents have fallen....or is that blown up?
We need help, fast! Fortunately, I know just the psychiatrist!
