Why in the name of all the D&D gods does the NEVERWINTER home page continue to freeze my browswer every time I try to open it? No other website does this. I can sit here all day long and do nothing but browse other websites (Including every single one of Perfect Worlds other games) and have zero issues. Yet every single time I try to open NW homepage it locks up my browser.
Obviously I can use the forum w/o issue. I can also use all the above links News, The Game, Community. Media, ets w/o issue. It doesn't matter what route I take either. Wether it be a direct link from a google search, or a link from PWE or any other scource, the same thing happens to me.
Yes I scan for virus and mal ware. It doesn't make any sense that it is ONLY this website that I cannot access. It totally freezes the browser and sometimes it eventually crashes on its own, but usualy I have to go into device manager and shut it down. Even then sometimes it doesn't work and I have to reboot. I pre ordered TL2 and am looking forward to being a beta tester, so obviously I would like access to the website homepage.
Please if anyone has ideas why this is happening let me know. Keep in mind like I have said above that its ONLY this website. I can open thousands of others w/o issue.
My guess is one of the scripts and or video is bamboozling your browswer.
Here's what I recommend.
1. Use Firefox.
2. Download AdBlockPlus addon.
3. Download Element Hiding Helper AdBlockPlus addon.
4. Close browser completely and reload.
5. Load the page, you might get right in.
6. If not, click your ABP stop sign and click on OPEN BLOCKABLE ITEMS. Right click delete on each script until you find the culprit.
7. Instead of step 6, you can click your ABP stop sign and click on SELECT AN ELEMENT TO HIDE.
These 2 free addons give you an INSANE amount of control on any website. It sounds hard but its pathetically simple. Whats great is it will remember choices you make on the fly so once its fixed its fixed forever.
Seriously. I don't see why anyone anywhere would not use firefox with adblock. Combine that with whatever flash blocker you might like and use spybot s&d to immunize and you have a pretty bad <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> solution against malware and numerous internet dickery.

Well, although I have all the browsers, I always use opera. Its a matter of preference I guess, but with everyone copying the UI of opera bit by bit, there would be a day when I would be able to make the transition to something else seamlessly

Yikes! Sorry to hear this! I know it's going to sound obvious, but we must try the easiest solutions first before we dive into any more detailed troubleshooting.
First: Is your computer plugged- I'm kidding.
1)clear your cache and cookies
2)If you're not using firefox, try firefox- this isn't because we prefer firefox, but sometimes there are minor things in chrome that might conflict with a design that was made for use in Firefox and IE.
2 a) If you ARE using firefox, try disabling any addons you have, or try it out in Chrome.

I was under the impression he's tried #1, since it was recommended to him before when he first mentioned it... so I didnt include it.
#3 is a not good advice. I know you are biased a bit in your new company's good ethics (PW), which I have no problem accepting. However if I ever felt the need to put a game's website into my firewall or antivirus' exception list, I would walk away and NEVER play that game. In other words, if I cant trust your company in my computer, why would I trust it in my wallet with my credit card?

Adding something to your firewall/antivirus list doesn't mean that it's inherently bad. It might be that there is a setting in your current firewall/antivirus software that is having an issue with the website. This is actually a fairly common suggestion, especially since this software isn't designed with gaming websites in mind, and sometimes that stuff blocks things arbitrarily. Since it's not something that is being blocked by everyone, it's fairly logical to conclude that if this is what's blocking their access, it's not because the site is infected.

I mentioned this from the beginning in another post since it simply be incorrectly blocking and redirecting until it crashes. If permitting the address still doesn't work, then removing it from the exception list is simple enough.
Adding something to your firewall/antivirus list doesn't mean that it's inherently bad.
Of course, but I stand by my assertion that if a website demands I grant it immune to my software protection - I either find better software or tell website to take a hike. Thats just me. He probably just needs to clean out his cache, run a good spyware scan software like Malwarebytes and/or SuperAntiSpyware, update/clean install his java software and/or use adblock ... or he's got more problems under the hood than he currently believes.
When did the website demand anything? It's an issue that one or two people are having. This happens to people periodically to people on various websites throughout the internet. Hell, after clearing my cache and cookies, some of the sites I use for work ask me if I'm sure I want to go there. Do I freak out? No- because that's an unreasonable reaction.
If the site were infected, we'd all be feeling it.
I never said the site was infected. But he might be. After 25+ years as a tech trust me there's nothing you can teach me about malware removal. I am well aware the site doesnt "demand" anything. However dropping firewall or antivirus protection, albiet not sound advice in my opi, on this site may be necessary on his PC in his situation, for a few reasons. But he needs to try what Melanderi recommended.
I will backstep as Melanderi has graciously stepped forward. Tinypyro should only listen to ONE person at a time. (He can always add adblockplus to Firefox after this is resolved...) So lets keep it on the lowdown and let them talk...
I'm assuming so since you were able to post on the forum. I know it's annoying, but why not just avoid using that page entirely? I believe you can get to basically any subsection of that page from the menu at the very top of the forum (News, The Game, Community, Media, Charge Zen). You'll miss out on a couple of links to social media sites and the button for beta access, but for present time I don't think that constitutes much of a loss.
Having designed a few webpages myself I've found that web design is basically powered by chaos theory mechanics, which is to say, there's little to no predicting just how many things can go wrong between what you designed and what the end user sees.
Hope that gives you a work around in the meantime.

Look, until he tries the steps listed by the official tech and support of this board, including sending a ticket if needed, I feel as Aandre suggested, we need to take a step back and let those attached to the site guide him. I can go over my tier 3 support and Aandre mentioned his quarter-century plus experience. All that written, we don't have the specifics (and schematics) of their setup, and we need to defer to those working here that somebody has taken the time to do so. Having a suggestion of bypassing the site from a third party observation is not prudent while there are people who can research and solve this problem (or escalate to people in a higher tier of support like Aandre and I did but working for PWE/Cryptic.)
Adblock Plus is still in beta on Chrome isnt it? If its "ready to fly" it would be the best thing to happen to Chrome.
Well, it still automatically blocks every single advert in every single website I go in without me actually doing anything - I don't even have to block things myself unless I'm in some obscure website that doesn't get much traffic... It also never borked out, except for one time, which was quickly fixed by a re-install of Chrome.
So, for all intents and purposes, it is ready to fly...
Well, although I have all the browsers, I always use opera. Its a matter of preference I guess, but with everyone copying the UI of opera bit by bit, there would be a day when I would be able to make the transition to something else seamlessly
I jumped off the Opera wagon when the performance speed got real bad some years ago. Just haven't tried it again since.
Because they can use Chrome with adblock instead. Same adblock as firefox, but 3 times faster...
b:laugh
I have a few issues with chrome though. Some small issues with bookmarks and it doesn't give me a scrolling bar when I open a massive amount of tabs. I do use it as a backup though.
Ok everyone thanks for the info. I am working 12 hr midnight shifts for the next week and likely will have very little time to address this issue, but as soon as I have the time I will try some of the various ideas and suggestions listed. Of course I have done all the basic things as I mentioned in the OP. Cookies, malware scans etc. I am using Internet explorer for my browser though and the one thing all of you seem to agree on is that Internet explorer is garbage.
So I will start there. I will try firefox with all of the recomended firefox programs then get back to you when I have done so with the results.
Thank you all so much for the advice!

Tada! Installed Firefox and it works like a charm. I hate these dam bears but this is worth a big fat b:laugh Such a simple solution. I guess IE is indeed garbage. Thanks guys for all the advice.

Awesome!!! Glad to hear.
And if you install the two adblock plus addons you'll really be surfin' in style...
Oh, and what do I think of IE? It's one of the most amazing tools for downloading Firefox.

LOL
Oh, I didn't think of that besides virtual bookend and a secondary browser that I bring up sometimes for a quick STO wiki DOFF mission/Tour the Galaxy map confirmation when playing online.
I usually check PcMag to see which browser is on top. But as Melandri(hope I spelled right) suggested, many a times the add-ons, the toolbars installed over years etc etc can cause problem. So if it doesn't work on one browser, you should try another.
I think right now(2012) chrome is going as most compatible one while firefox is the least resource hungry. But it all fluctuates depending on updates and requirements.
EDIT: Even though I always use opera because of integrated mail and stuff... but if a site doen't opens on it, I try some other browser.
I don't think IE9 is garbage at all. It's insanely fast and stable. Of my three installed browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and IE) it's the least crashy. But not having a real adblocker is a deal breaker for me. So I use Chrome with Adblock Plus and Firefox as my backup. I use often IE for surfing Microsoft sites when I'm downloading MSDN subscription stuff or using other MS services, but that's about it.

Does the problem only happen on the specific URL "http://nw.perfectworld.com/"?
