That was not actually frozen. It takes its sweat time to 'free' its memory. However, when it is doing it, it actually acquires even more memory. In my multiple experience, it could acquires more than 1GB of RAM slowly before it actually releases the RAM it took. You can use task manager to watch it. No, not every time but when it goes nuts, it just goes nuts.
Yes, forcefully terminate the task would save time.

When the client starts lagging, I can tell this memory management problem is creeping in.
I can tell this kind of lagging is not from the server or internet speed.
Hence, I usually will just exit the client and start it up again.

The following is what happened just now.
When I exit the client, task manager indicated it was using 1.8GB.

The following were captured after the graphic display of the client already disappeared. Note that there is no networking traffic associated with the client. Hence, it was not downloading patch.

    few minutes later

    one minute later

    Another minute later

start to release RAM and the number goes down

Eventually, the program exit for real.

I had a problem the other day where the game crashed and froze (in fullscreen) and just sat there frozen in time, but doing ctrl alt del would not open the task manager to close the client, it just kept bouncing back to the frozen fullscreen view. Nothing would get me out of just having the screen full of the frozen game image and I was stuck there. So I couldn't see or access the task mngr window to close it or do anything at all to get out of it. In the end the only thing I was able to do was ctrl alt del and then switch user using the button down the bottom right and just log in again while everything was still loaded which somehow corrected the issue and enabled me to see and use the tsk mangr window and also see the cryptic crash reporter had triggered and close that as well.
Apparently pointing-out the bleeding obvious is a 'personal attack'.

I don't deny there is something wrong. I don't deny it is common. I just explained it is not actually frozen. It is doing things (most likely pointless things). The UI may look like it is frozen but if you check the task manager (if you can), you will see it is "running".

Yes, it can take many minutes for it to 'finish' what it tried to do and whatever it is trying to do properly some kind of pointless clean up. It took something like 15 minutes few times. The slower your hardware is, the longer it could take. The less RAM your PC has, the longer it will take. What it does is getting more and more memory until it reaches certain point before it starts to release them all. Yes, that could make your PC not operatible.
Yes, I watch the task manager showing what I described while watching TV.

If I have to guess, it seems they changed the memory management package in the game. It seems it uses less memory comparing with before but it seems to have many bad side effects.
