Masterworks quests consume protected items

I just turned in jewelcrafting items for unlocking mw1. I had two sets so I protected one and left the other unprotected. The quest completed using the *protected* items rather than the unprotected ones.
I think professions doesn't correcrly respect item protection, which is a little scary. But this also seems to show the protected items (were in bag 2) are preferred over the non protected ones (which were in bag 1).
I also had an issue where leatherworking would only recognize an item in inventory when I protected it.
It's almost like the software is reading the protection the wrong way around.
