xbox controller on the pc?

I know it's possible because someone was talking about being on their controller today but how? I tried just doing plug and play and that's fail. what's the trick?

The game doesn't have controller support however there is a workaround by using a 3rd parting program. Keep in mind there is usually a purchase fee for one of these programs and they can be a little wonkey at times. I honestly wish they would just add controller support like many other games have. I'm not sure what the rules are for using such a program so I recommend following up to make sure it won't get you the ban hammer.

Looks like microsoft have a windows app to map stuff to the controller, it's called the "Xbox Accessories App" and you need to download it via windows app store.

    Though third party, like https://www.rewasd.com/
    looks more promising.

After playing with it a little I found steam has some support for it too but super wonky nothing like actual Xbox nw controls

The game engine has support for Controllers (as seen with CO and STO) but Neverwinter unfortunately has never properly enabled support for plug & play Controllers. The use of third party software would be needed to get them to function. Even then, the controls are nothing compared to the console or even with what's seen on the PC for STO and CO.

As a player, it will take a lot, and I mean a lot, of configuration and creativity to get it even remotely close to what is seen on Console and STO/CO. There was a thread on this a long time ago and have been many others too. I've been hoping that since NW is now on XBOX and PS4, some true controller support would be enabled/added to Neverwinter. Hopefully one day...

It does seem odd that the other Cryptic properties have native controller support but NWO does not... especially now that NWO is actually on gaming platforms that use controllers specifically.

Have there ever been any indication from any devs about the status of adding controller support to NWO?

I use XPAdder with a custom profile for NW, it doesn't give you enough mapping options, but it works somewhat decent...

I agree. I assumed that when NW came to XBOX, this would usher in native controller support like seen in STO and CO. Alas, I was mistaken. Back in December 2016, in regards to this thread, @nitocris83 said:

    Hi zevi,

As far as I know, there is no concrete plan at this time for this but with game development, nothing is ever set in stone :)

Other than that, I have not heard of any other mentions.

Should we start an official petition

Suggestions in the form of feedback within the Feedback Forum, sure. Actual "petitions" on the forum, no.

I use an Xbox controller for NW pc through xpadder. I have it mapped exactly like the controls on my PS4. The only issue I have is the camera toggle being a little wonky. But I think that's the controller and not the game or program. I really do think neverwinter should have native controller support.

    To each their own... but,

I would rather see keyboard and mouse added to X-Box than try to "strangle an octopus" to play this on a PC (that already has a great interface)

    Why. Just... why...?
  • thefiresidecatthefiresidecat Member Posts: 4,486 Arc User
because it is far more like strangling an octopus to play this on keyboard. my fingers end up locking up after just one dungeon run. I can play wiht zero problems on a controller. the movement keys along with the attack keys and only five fingers on one hand prove problematic as it's all expected to be done with one hand as the layout stands. other than weirdly just the two at wills on your mouse and needing to direct the camera with the mouse. frankly I don't know how anyone does it. it's very poorly laid out imo. my in game mobility is subpar on pc.

Part of the problem with any 3rd party controller software is it will be converting your analog controller movements into digital keypresses... so until there is native controller support the 3rd party software will never be able to match the smoothness one would expect from a controller! :(

Hmm, given how Neverwinter uses a mouselook toggle there may be a way using mouse emulation to get smoother camera control... do any of the 3rd party controller apps support a mouse movement toggle for the analog sticks by chance?

for those of you who are using other controller software to use the xbox one controller how do you set up keybinds for the more complex actions. here is what it looks like on xbox and how I'd like to configure my controller.

mapping teh simple things seems simple but getting the things like left bumper plus x button seems more difficult to me.
Steam is what i was trying on but if one of the other programs has a more user friendly set up I'll download that instead.

    Up d pad mount
    Click right thumb stick run
    L R and down d pad potions/scrolls
    X Y B abilities
    Left joystick wsad
    Left joystick press is dodge
    Right joystick look/camera view

    Left bumper + A jump
    Left bumper +B artifact power
    Left bumper +Y daily power
Left bumper +x 2nd daily power
Right bumper change from melee to ranged
Left bumper plus dpad up invoke
Left bumper plus dpad down chat

Left bumper in chat window changes group
Left bumper changes view of screen between menus for potions vs powers, but this is unneeded on pc I want to change to jump

View button= character options including vip options menu (don’t know if this will be mappable)
Menu button brings up menu in game. Store char items ect

Have a feeling that I’ll absolutely never be using joystick to chat so maybe change the left bumper to jump instead of the combo. That combo screws up a lot of other games lol.

I think I got all the commands

Other things like crafting and what not it probably makes more sense to go back to the keyboard and mouse because it’s not action.

I don't even have a controller, or an xbox, so can't try at all, but the program I've linked earlier has some contributed profiles, there was one for NW.

I looked at that but it was for an elite pro which has paddles that the one controller doesn't have and also it looked like an entirely different layout than what I'm going for. basically I want what I'm used to. I think that person was just a pc person who hadn't played via xbox or ps4 (they have the same control layout) so had it totally weird. lol. i'm at two or 2.5 years of play time so my reflexes are pretty trained to xbox config. it's very very very difficult for this old dog to learn that kind of new trickery.

my husband is a computer programmer so I'm sure he can help me but I was hoping for some concrete direction before dragging him in to splain it. lol. I can't be the only one here to switch over to pc from console and want to take my controller lay out with me. the link zebular linked to from a few years ago suffers from the same weird layout problem. people were using different layouts than actually ended up being rolled out to consoles and from what I can see the keybinds for some of the more complex commands look pretty complicated. (to someone with zero experience with keybinds anyway)

the steam thing has a layout that is very easy to map as long as you don't want to do complex things like left bumper plus x key. to map to what is now the 3 key. I suspect it's similar in other platforms. one of the other threads talked about having to have another folder of keybind commands for the controller. I don't know if thats just what you have to do.

I was really excited to come back to Neverwinter, I intended to make it my main game, but the lack of native controller support for a game that already has half of that work done due to console ports makes Neverwinter a no-go for me. I'd could easily play the game on my wireless mouse and keyboard, but the combat feels much better to me on a controller, which I experienced when I had an Xbox One. Please add native controller support!

Yeap I use Xpadder as well, seems to be OK.
