Who is Gyrion

I just finished the Cloaked Ascendancy quest and I am still not clear what the final story of Gyrion is. At one point I was under the impression that he was a being from the Far Realm that replaced the original Gyrion, now because he was in the end fighting to save Neverwinter it seems he was the original Gyrion. Or did the Far Realm change him by merging him with another Far Realm being?

I would say the evidence indicates that he made a bargain to embrace Far Realm power because he felt it was the best way to protect himself and his friends at first, and to protect Neverwinter after coming back.
