You have to have the key when it checks for the key. I don't remember when it does that for FBI but in some dungeons if you don't have the key before the last boss fight starts you can't open the chest.
There used to be a message at the start of dungeons, saying the bonus chest was unlocked. But as above said, there is a specific point in the instance that a key check is made, and if you dont have it at that time, you cant open it (even if you get the key after).
Not the greatest mechanic and I'm not sure why it matters if I have it at the start or get one at the end. Seems to me they'd sell a few keys if they allowed you to buy at the end - the lure of the available chest would be to much for many.
No reason the game can't simply check your inventory when you try and open the chest. This seems like they are trying to prevent some sort of exploit...but I cant see how.
Take out of bank, then mail it to yourself. Taking items like keys from bank dont flag it as hitting your inventory, yet taking from mailbox does.
Taking items from the bank hits some checks but not others. It will unlock a collection entry for an artifact, but not the lore entry. For the lore, you have to mail the artifact.
