Racial Traits and Character Customization

Okay, I'm going to suggest something crazy, but please all, no hamster throwing.

What if all the racial bonuses were removed and made into unlockables intead, like the current Mount system? So if you paid for a Dragonborn, you could still utilize Dragonborn Fury, but pick whichever race you want at the character customization. So you could play an elf or a dwarf and still gain the benefits of extra power. Since this is a roleplaying/fantasy game, why limit customization with racial traits and the incapability of Neverwintan smiths to make helmets a few sizes larger to fit Dragonborns?

Yes, it would be nice to be able to roleplay the class we want, not just the class that has the neatest, least bugged bonus.

No. No pain, no gain! You have to sacrifice looks and hats for some extra muscle.

In brief, I cannot see Wizards of the Coast agreeing to allow that much discrepancy between how racial bonuses work in P&P and Neverwinter. Each racial bonus is intended to be something that makes sense as a trait of that race.

Ah, yes. I forgot that WotC might have Cryptic on a rather short leash.

That's a pity, really. For me, the ability scores and the unique looks would be enough of a difference when some racials are... well, kind of bad. For example, how worthwhile is a wood elf's +10% resistance to slow compared to a tiefling's extra damage against enemies with half health or a dragonborn's +3% more power? Not very, especially in pve, but who knows how strict WotC is about the IP.

With the multitude of enhantments, mount bonuses, insignia bonuses, equipment, you can pretty much customize your character to *almost* any configuration you want. Races are a component of that choice system.

The ONLY way I see this being an option is if they make a 'permanent Polymorph/Illusion' token. It would let you pick any *1* race to play for looks *only* (basically, you would get to change the pallette you pick from for looks. Everything else would stay the same. Although, since some races cannot be certain classes, it might be tough to match animations.
Just checked, and I must be thinking of another game.

@litaaers Yes! I like your idea of a polymorph token. That's exactly what I would pay Zen for since I feel that appearance is a quite important part of character customization. That kind of an item is a better idea than what I was initially suggesting and I support it 100%.

We are playing an online version of Dungeons and Dragons 4.0. There are plenty of games out there that offer you the options you might want.

@myles08807 Well, maybe with character customization, but I really like Neverwinter's combat system and that's not turn-based either. Besides, we can already buy maxed-out characters, magic exists, and character creation got an update with the 5th ed., so maybe that's where we're headed.

I would love to link Alter Self: Change Appearance from the 5th ed. wiki, but my phone is suddenly allergic to copy/paste. (And, in my opinion, having Alter Self or something similar available to every class is no less reasonable than seemingly having some poor wizard living in our pockets just to summon a Tenser's Floating Disc.)

    Edit: Okay, finally.

You left out the possibility of throwing out racial bonuses altogether.

@magenubbie , I don't think they want to change stats, just looks. Ex: They want to be a Dragonborn (w/DB stats) who looks like a Dwarf and wears dwarven armor.

We already have race reroll tokens and change appearance tokens (both permanent), so it's just a matter of potentially expanding the change appearance menu.

Again, no it's not. A race reroll token comes with the newly selected race's attributes at the cost of the old ones and change appearance tokens are not able to change your attributes at all. I fail to see how "potentially expanding the change appearance menu" will be of any help if it's not in accordance with the rules of the game. But if you insist on being stubborn, so be it. Good luck with it.

If by 'rules of the game' you are referring to D&D(any ed.), then I'd just like to bring up that there are NO worlds where EVERYONE is the hero, almost everyone has EPIC gear or better, and rides around on extremely rare machines/drakes/magical creatures, all while carrying around SEVERAL of Demogorgon's Fangs.

This game is BASED on D&D, it is not locked INTO D&D. They could quite conceivably create a token that let you change race appearance, without affecting anything else. Or would you tell them they're being stubborn?
