So, I'm a pretty casual player, meaning I don't have much gold or astral diamonds on my account.
I'm currently interested on acquiring an Augment Companion, ideally a bound to account one so that I could use on many characters. I really hate AI NPCs walking around me, and augment seems the way to go.
Question is simple: What's the easiest/cheapest way to get one (without having to spend real money, or at least spending as few as possible)?

If you play on PC and used Gateway within the last year, then you'll be getting a single-use augment as a gift soon.
Goats were really cheap. I haven't been looking at prices on them, but they'll have gone up since the key pack they dropped from was replaced with another promotion. But maybe not have gone up that much. Worth a look.
You can fake an augment by taking any companion with all defense slots and putting Eldritch runestones on it. This tool allows you to compare companions. A number of free or cheap companions (from events) have 3 defensive rune slots.

Because you identify as a casual player with a low budget, there's really no point in anyone yammering on about bonded companions being better. This simply is not realistic for everyone.

First things first, there are no account bound companions. If you equip a companion, he is bound to the character. There are account wide companions in certain Zen market packages, but no augment, as far as I know.
The cheapest augment companion goes for a few hundred thousand ADs. If you want to spent big and go for BIS, you need an active companion with bounding runestones. To make this viable, you should calculate a few million ADs.
Grind ADs with dailies and weeklies, join a guild, let the help you in CN hope for a good drop, sell it or farm HEs for lanolin and sell that. Thats my advice.
