Thinking of playing NW, a question on the Devoted Cleric

chispin55chispin55 Member Posts: 4 Arc User
Hi all, I'm curious to try out this game, and traditionally I prefer playing the healing/ prot/ cleric role in MMOs. My concern is that from what I've read so far is that the Devoted Cleric can only wear chain armour (i.e. heavy), which I find rather off-putting. Is there any way that this class can wear robes or some kind of light armour?
Thanks.

    No.

Each class has One type of armor. And as far i can remember the Devoted cleric wears light armor.

The "class" of armor can be very different from what you actually display, and it won't have any real impact on what your character can do. You can transmute armor to look like something else, and keep all of the base stats from your original armor. However, this can be pretty expensive to do, so it's more of a late-game thing once you've gotten your final armor put together.

That being said, the cleric "chain" armors sometimes look very robe-y.

Go here to see some views of what the cleric armors can look like (keep in mind that only the later pages are what you can really get in-game right now): http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/neverwinter/#/discussion/508783/community-show-us-your-clerics-screenshots

If you're concerned about the look of the devoted cleric-- most of our end game armor looks unaesthetic at best... (I'm looking at you elven Antler neck or Dragonflight Friar Tuck.)

I opted to transmute my armor to a +4 armor that was cheap in the AH because I didn't want to have Antler neck.

Thanks for the comments so far, people. I'll try to reiterate, I'm trying to avoid the 'paladin' connotations (it's what I found very offputting about the Guardian in Guild Wars 2 having mained as a monk in GW1). So far, in the shots what I've seen are 'heavy' looking sets. If it makes it easier for you guys to make a suggestion, allow me to present some guidelines. Imagine the character is part of an abbey, and would be equally comfortable in the armour set in the abbey library as he would be in combat (which negates heavy armour sets which would be clunky and impractical to wear all day indoors).

Yup, leaving on the fashion instead of the combat tab is likely your best bet. Heck, you even get free "rags" at the beginning that you could use until you can afford something better. They look like they'd be for your typical abbey initiate.

The only issue with this games fashions compared to any other mmo.. (and yes ive seen just as ugly) is that there is no real wardrobe feature.. which really blows ...

armor can be transmuted to have appearance of other armor.

Good healers are definitely in short supply right now.
Devoted clerics are not simply healers. Currently, they are buffers, debuffers, healers, and action point restorers.
I hate to say anything bad about Paladin healers, but I recommend you choose a devoted cleric.
A DC is often MVP in a party, for the 4 reasons I already stated.

Many of the DC's chain armors are a mixture of mesh and fabric textures, but you can acquire fashion robes like Thayan Patrician, which might be more to your liking, and just have your armor not visible.

In my opinion, armour gears are changed and upgraded all the time. One may even want to switch gear between PVE and PVP. Hence, my main character always wears the same fashion set from the beginning so that he can have the same look without keep on changing the appearance.

frankly not many actually look like real chain.

DC headgear does tend to look like chain hoods, but like I said, the armor is mixed mesh and fabric textures.

I actually wonder how the original poster would feel about the DC's guild armor (which someone described as "Friar Tuck"). It's very heavy on the fabric, with a pronounced cowl. The image below is Dragonflight, but guild armor is the same skin without the idiotic stylized dragon pauldrons. DC on the left. The guild boots and bracers don't have the heavy metal overlay either.

Well if we view it on traditional AD&D clerics were plate wearers, heavy armor. IRL of course only the military orders were frequently intentionally involved in combat, I'd say Paladin is a good analogy for them. A real life parish priest or scribe(The derivation of cleric, see clerk and clerical), would indeed have had little use for armor. I find a lot of the low level cleric armor does contain a lot of fabric, either as tabards or robes and would be appropriate for the look you want, there are also several items with a lighter look that can be obtained it the leveling quest series, the problem is the transmute cost if you want to maintain the look and increase in capability. Also look into the emperors line of undergarment transmutes(Player made) to remove the chain look from the the shirt and pants or start an alt and transfer the fabric look starter undergarments across.
Or as others have said buy a fashion set you like(There should be several that suit your vision, either in the tradebar store or..uhm in the tradebar store nowadays), dye it your tastes and set it to display, and never worry about the appearance of your armor again
