To me, the best one is the one I want something out of at any given time. It used to be the one with the Tenser's and now it is the one with Metallic Dragonborn race. As soon as I unlock that, it will be a different one.
In general I agree wth Zeb. However, I think what the TS is looking for is the box with the best chances of getting something worth more than 20k AD. And the answer to that is simple: Only Cryptic knows. And they delight in remaining Cryptic about it. We assume they are all the same, but that's based on nothing more than blind faith. The RNG is too unpredictable in this game to be sure or even test it properly.
The boxes with Planar Idols are probably a better bet than anything else.

The other problem is that older lockboxes aren't updated, so you may get things like the non-ensorcelled mulhorand items, which stop leveling at 60, or the older coffer of enchantments, which may only contain R5's.

So you don't open anything that comes out of the lockbox and sell it for 14-20k. Same thing happens with new lockboxes but you occasionally get 40k. And the planar idols drop a lot more often than anything worth that much in newer lockboxes.

In a set of 10 boxes I usually get two to three planar idols, each are 44k AD (AD, not RAD) because I have VIP. Some of the ancient mulhorand gear sells for more than the ensorcelled mulhorand gear, I think either because of self-contained auction nuts or people wanting the skins. The only problems are dated animal companion boxes, which don't sell well. Just sell the coffers, or save them up and mass open near the end of this month during double RP for Runestones and Enchantments.
On topic: Currently I am targetting rusted boxes to see if I can coax out a rust monster. I want one for my GF.
Thank you for that. The old wiki RNG tests are mostly old ones. How old are these tests?
@magenubbie They get updated quite often. They were originally performed ages ago but you will notice the thread author updates them, making them still valid. The testing does include the crushing wave lockboxes and onwards and gives an estimated value of each box, which helps quite a bit.
Also, for general interest, there are other tools on that site like one that graphs the zax and one that tracks the prices of items on the AH. It makes informed market decisions easier to make and it also makes playing the zax easier.
Agree with other posts that say you should identify what you want from the box.
If it's a particular mount or companion - go for the box that offers that until you get it and move on.
If it's just max AD - Nightmare and Rusted (in my experience) generate the most AD consistently (from planar idols and jeweled weaponboxes).
If you want to focus on a profession - go for a lockbox that offers a profession upgrade option - Unearthed does that like crazy for Alchemy, and Frozen does that for Black Ice Forging, others do it for Leadership, Jewelcraft and Weaponsmithing.
The most recent - Howling Hatred - is best if you want to build a stockpile of GMoPs and SMoPs.
The really old ones, like Dark Forest, are mostly only good if you want the mount or companion - though they sometimes produce some pretty good artifacts (Blue or Purple LoR and WoE in particular). Everything else from those is pretty tame now - green RPs, etc. - though for some reason some of the sub level 60 weapons that drop still go for good AD prices (probably to transmute).
