Why are armor pieces like High Vizier's set selling for so much on the AH now? Are they actually selling?

Unobtainium.

Sets with a good bonus have value for circumstantial use. Sets without a good bonus, whatever you can get for them out of a collector.

A lot of the old equipment also has a unique appearance, and may be used for transmutation.

How long did it take before people realized it was unobtainable and the prices started to rise on the AH? Thanks for the info.

Started immediately after the launch of M6 - but as supply dwindles, the price will rise.
