I'm unclear on how this change will affect my characters if my sub lapses.
I have a sub now, and about 20 freeform characters.
If my sub lapses, how many will I be able to use? If I'm not allowed use any of them (normal when unsubbed), how do I regain access to them if I can't sub again?
If your sub lapses, you can still use all of them as silver ATs for free. It's not like the characters and all of their things get deleted.
To use the original FF builds for all of your characters, you would buy LTS. If you wanted to use just one or two of them as their original build you would buy FF conversion tokens from the zen store and convert each one you want to use.
Nobody in their right mind is going to spend above the cost of LTS to convert their roster. So your max cost incurred to you is always the price of LTS. The minimum cost is the price of one character conversion token.
Let's say it again.
Max cost: LTS
In-between: up to you to decide how many chars you want to be FF
Min cost: 1 char conversion
And what are the costs of those? Last I heard a LTS was something like $300 (which I'm NOT paying for a game as old as this, with as little development as this, and as little actual content as this), and freeform slots were around $50 (which I'm NOT paying for even ONE of my characters, let alone all of them).
Once, I was simply called Mojo. Now, I'm forced into a new name, but don't be fooled, I'm the original STO Mojo!

FF slots are 30 dollars, LTS currently on sale for 120.
I mean, going by the "a game as old as this, with as little development as this, and as little actual content as this" you should have no issue just saying goodbye to this game in its entirety once your sub does lapse, so I say: If that price is too high, then just don't buy, and say goodbye. o/

That may indeed be the result... and I suspect not just for me. I worry that this may be them putting a shotgun to the game's head.
Then again, I've easily spent more than $120 on subscribing over the years. The question is, would I get $120 value out of the game going forward? Does the game have another year? Two? I look at this, and I really wonder.
Once, I was simply called Mojo. Now, I'm forced into a new name, but don't be fooled, I'm the original STO Mojo!
Current development plans take the game through September for sure, and, given the money the game makes in December, it is very likley (near certainty) that the game will run through next January. That's already six months.
I'd say buy the LTS, especially if it goes on sale again. It stinks for folks that missed the $120 price.
Do the chatlogs get stored somewhere serverside? Cause like it would be really cool for Anniversary if they did an infographic like they did for "Still Standing" where they tally how many times a variation of "CO is dieing" has been said in Rencen zone chat.
And by "really cool" I mean for fucks sake stop this meme already
I would ordinarily agree with you. Doomsaying is usually premature. However, this time feels different.
Consider:
At this point there's only Lifetime, a LARGE payout for an old game, or payment for freeform slots. There's no longer going to be any kind of regular payment plan, no regular income for the company.
It feels like they're grabbing for whatever cash they can as fast as they can, with no plans for the future of the game, because there is no payment plan going forward. We pay NOW, and that's IT, no more money for them (except the little bits and pieces from the store).
That makes me think that there IS no plan for the future... because there IS no future.
I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

No it doesn't. It feels, looks, sounds, smells, and tastes like every single other time. The people crying doom all of those times thought their time was special too. And now they're all dead.

And that's why it's not a big deal. The freeform slots instantly make that capslocked LARGE look silly because LTS is just another option. Was a subscription really a better addition to those options? 15 bucks a month? Who the heck subs to an MMO that's not WoW anymore. Microtransactions are the name of the game now, and LTS is just a way to buy a bunch of micros at once for a huge discount. Everybody loves a good deal. Anyone who sees the LARGE HUGE GIGANTIC price of LTS and goes "Woooaoaoaohaoaoahoahoahaoaaah! That's too big!" and goes running without ever looking what LTS gets them is... well they're kind of a dummy, and I don't want them showing up at Cosmics.

That would be my local community of gamers. As a group, we tend to have a limited entertainment budget, and $15 a month for unlimited access to an adequately developed game environment (like WoW, LOTRO, or either Final Fantasy) is a good deal. Add the convenience of predictable, scheduled auto transactions, and the microtransaction model is even less appealing.
And as for the folks who look at the LTS price and react "That's too big!", it isn't the benefits they aren't looking at, it's the "How many months of not gaming are required to save up for that amount?" that you're not considering.

No, that's just another part of the cost-benefit analysis. Huh, I want a corvette, oh but I would have to save money and maybe give up some other luxuries for a while, is that cost worth the benefit of the corvette? Obviously not since corvettes are terrible cars. For me when I had to make the exact consideration that you're claiming I'm not considering, I decided that that cost was worth it because I looked at what I would get and I decided that tightening my budget for a while was an acceptable cost. On the other hand Subscribing to me was never acceptable because I saw that I would end up spending more and getting less than if I went the LTS route. Honestly, it was always worth it to just go without a sub for a year and save that money to get LTS.
Also, why do you have to stop gaming to save up money? Just play the games you have. Wait.. are there people who only play games that you have to sub to? I wouldn't have done that. Buy Skyrim, spend a year modding it, then use all the money you saved to buy LTS.
It's a matter of affordability. I can afford $15 this month. I can't afford $300 or even $120, all at once. That means they lose the possibility of me subscribing, and lose that revenue. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

There's a non-zero population of people like that, but I'd lay odds on the actual reasoning being "our subscription system needs major maintenance. Doing this would cost money. Do we get enough money from subscriptions to offset that cost?".
If subscriptions were still meaningful in STO or NWN, the answer would likely be yes, but subs haven't been meaningful there for ages, and the number of subscribers in CO just isn't enough.

If you can afford to subscribe for 14 months then you can afford LTS. The only question left is can you go for 14 months without your sub. I went a couple years without a sub so I'm sure it's possible.

Yeah when i first started playing I looked at the benefits of sub/lts and concluded that monthly sub was a waste of time, and that I'd be better off waiting until I'd collected the money for LTS.
