Hello and welcome to everyone from "The City of" (and all you CO peeps as well!). I played CoX for a number of years, built up a large Supergroup on Protector called the "Knights of Tomorrow" and had 20+ characters with 12 making it to level 50 and about 5 of those were pretty loaded with purples and incarnate stuff.
My main toon was called Big'Red (SS/Invuln - remade in CO), also had Juicy'Fruit (elec/shield - remade in CO), Obsidia NIH (Warshade), EL Fuego Dama(Fire/fire - remade in CO as Blazing Barbie), and Deianera (broadsword/shield - remade in CO).
So I think I can fairly say that I know from where you come. CoX had the best group of people - so many people helped me get over my newb-ness and I learned from so many great people. I ran with a great crowd - fun, funny, yet able to tear through +8 +4 mobs solo in many cases. We'd have leveling parties just to help people get their toons through the awkward first levels before the AT's "flavor" would kick in mid-game.
Champions Online is not "City of". But it has a similar soul. Different, but similar. You won't find as much teaming (but that could change with enough CoX'ers here), but most people are still friendly and helpful. There are quite a few costume contests, and the costumes choices are ALMOST as limitless as CoX's were. There aren't as many giant Monsters here, but the ones that are here seem a little more purposeful. There are no city walls, so it feels a bit more natural; and the buildings are more realistic.
Silver players get to choose from several different Archetypes, whereas Gold (subscription) players can freeform their character. Freeform is really nice if you want to mix and match powersets (such as Super Strength, Heat vision and Freezing Breath). Freeform allows you to make a fully customized toon, which is really a great thing IMO.
The 'feel' of the character is very realistic: Tanks seem indestructible, magic characters seem otherworldly, melee dps type toons seem frenzied - just as I would expect them to. To me this makes the character more immersive, and all my toons feel 'heroic'.
CO is still relatively young, and has a lot of growing to do, but that maturity will come. And with all the CoX people coming over, it's my hope that the community will become a bit more CoX like in it's feel. Also, I hope that developers will now be able to do some of the things we've yet to see. Perhaps a new zone (a CO version of Croatoa would be awesome!), more Giant Monsters, more special events. Oh, and more Task forces (called Adventure Packs here I believe). There's only 3, maybe 4 of them, we definitely need more.
In the year and a half since my migration to CO, I've amassed about 25 characters with 5 hitting level 40and about 10 near the level 30 mark. I've learned a lot - and I'm still learning! If anyone needs anything from me, feel free to find me most evenings in-game: @borg1of9 is my global handle.
First: I'm fresh from City of Heroes.
Second: Not to denigrate this game or its marvelous community..CO is filler only until something else comes along for me. IF something else comes along. This game is too much like a pale copy of my very first MMORPG.
Third: To -really- give the game a chance, I purchased three month's sub time. I'm pleasantly surprised at what subbing opened up. Bonus there.
To justify the second...my main gripe is the graphics. Can't stand the style. Besides the grindy grindfest that is WoW's gameplay....it was the overly unrealistic graphics that made me not want to play it. I'm dealing with the graphics now because....I feel that yes, CoX is indeed out of time. It's going to end up like all the other NCSoft dead games, despite the heroic efforts on everyone's parts, including mine.
Other gripes include the totally non-intuitive way contacts are done. Names are given, but no location on map. You're left to wander the city trying to find this person.....often into areas with mobs capable of one shotting your character. At least, that's what's happened to me three times so far.
I will say...the times I've piped up and asked questions, -usually- they've been answered quickly and politely....but not concisely. I'm unfamiliar with terminology of the game and nuances of mechanics, but mechanics matter little to me as long as I can punch/blast/shoot/slice the bad guys.
Equally, I've been denigrated for not having the optimal build/powerset/gear when doing the flash/alert mission things.
So...to sum it up...it's like any other MMORPG in the fact it's got ups and downs. I can live with the downs for a season.
I do sincerely hope that what happened to City of Heroes never happens here, to you.
EVERYbody says this first. Yes, I do. Yes, I know the game defaults to half resolution. I've corrected both things.
And yes, the graphics still bug me. Personal preference. I don't like the style of art. Cars....dear god. Let's not even go -there-. Characters....yeah. Barely tolerable. But....it -is- tolerable, so....home for now.
wow. all the negaitivity.... seriously, how do you expect to welcome new players and encourage them to stay with an attitude like that.
before the influx of coh players we had a nice steady population. it may not have exactly broken any records but it was steady.
with what is going on with coh i KNOW a lot of those players will probably stay here once all the dust settles... they were the FIRST generation of super hero RPG?rs, and since i to was of this stellar generation (back in my day lol) i can tell you that once you are hooked on the genre, you have to pry it out of cold/dead fingers. and of the options there's here... and there's dc....
Nice steady population? The population of this game has been dwindling since on alert went live and all the cool loot got removed from the game, i'm talking about the Teleiosaurus pheremones, Qwyjibo action figure, pirated override codes, gadroon mercenary contract etc. These were the things that gave people a reason to log in and do the relative dungeon/cosmic/open mission to get the thing's they wanted.
The biggest mistake ever made was the removal of these things and also the small problem of no new content being added ( I dont count these alerts as content) which has basically turned this game into nothing more than somewhere you can pay $15 a month to play dress up.

It's the easiest fix to the most common graphics complaint, that is why it comes up first in the problem solving tree.
If it is personal preference that's ok. I cannot fathom how one would come from CoH and not think it is an improvement, but art is subjective.

Can i suggest you put your opinion on CO's graphics in your sig?
That way you don't have to manually repeat yourself (differently each time) every time you post

Well...it's literally my only gripe so far. Otherwise, it's a good copy of a game I've come to love.

I agree and I disagree.
The population seems to bounce up and down depending upon seasons, holidays, time, and day of the week. And just going by the number of instances there seems to be more action in MC than in the weeks before Alert. But everything past Westside seems to be empty. It's like everyone either quits after that or just levels via alerts.
It's also possible that the population is 99% old timers who are just sitting around shooting the breeze in zone chat.
But yeah, the removal of the "phat lewt" was a bad idea. Raiding and doing lairs for the uber gear is pretty much the main reason long term MMO players become long term MMO players. And while it's not for me, giving people a reason to stick it out after the third or fourth alt is something the game is bad at now.
I would say that it also has to do with newer players as well. I have one lvl 20 and a lvl 17 (or 18) and I actually have no idea how to travel to the other places. I just tend to run arund picking up missions as I go (and do alerts) If the travel places were easier to find in game, then you might have more refugees in the other zones (something that can be learned from COH is the transit system).

You get both "other area" missions from Defender, or SOCRATES, and the transport is the giant blue jet thats clearly marked on the over world map. (or helicopter right next to the blue jet)
In fact, if you completed the Westside arc, when you returned to Surhoff after shutting down the Death Dragon, he should have offered you missions to Project Greenskin in the Desert, and Force Station Steelhead in Canada. (Don't recall the name of the Desert intro mission, but the invite to Steelhead is called "Canadian Conundrum".) Take the mission, then go to the Helicopter (NOT the Superjet, but the 'copter nearby), and you'll go to the Crisis for the zone you chose. Then you get a whole sequence of missions that should take you to around 18 or so, when you'll be given the choice to go deeper into this zone, or return to MC. Also, when you're at least 20, go to Canada (if you haven't done the Crisis, you can go ahead and use the Superjet anyway at this point), go down to the main building in Steelhead, and talk to Mark Derringer out front - he'll give you a mission to go visit Black Mask in Vibora Bay (this is the storied "Queen City" arc, that takes place well before the Vibora Bay Apocalypse). "Queen City" is labeled as a lvl-22 mission, but I've run it with characters as low as 20 without a problem. As a side benefit, if your bags are getting full, Vibora Bay in "Queen City" even has a bank, an AH, and vendors to sell your stuff to!
I didn't even hunt around for this stuff - it's all presented to you in a quite linear fashion by your mission contacts...

I couldn't disagree more. I'd say.....85% of CoX's population were longtime subscribers. Over 3 years is what I mean by longtime. Of that 85%, perhaps....60% were simply there to interact with their friends. Most everyone I knew didn't grind. Time was taken for RP, basebuilding, RP mishing(ogod, if that ever takes off here....) and the like.
So...no. "Lewtless" is good. In my humble opinion, anyway.

Wouldn't know about 85% since CoH went from 250k at launch to down about 125k by the time the third year rolled around.

How does the lack of loot for the grinders improve the enjoyment of the game for the folks just hanging out?
Comments

kinda fitting how the MMO's about superHEROES have the best communities huh?
but anyways, this is a great thread, so +1
yay! highfive! *waits patiently with metaphorical hand held high*
I've a stalker who uses a quarterstaff in CoX. I know there isn't a power set for this in Champions, is there at least a costume set for quarterstaff?

Yep, sorry, I meant a weapon skin. I did see the wizard's staff. Oh well. I'll figure something out with that character.
