I recently had a conversation with a new player whose only reason for not subscribing essentially boiled down to wanting an easier time with character creation. He liked the idea of cross-set builds, but didnt have the time to spend building characters. Through our conversation a frequently expressed worry was that he might ruin his character.

My thought was that since AT's are an easy introduction for Silver players, why dont we, as the community, put together some effective, "guaranteed to not suck," builds for new Golds (or even veterans who just want quick and easy access to a set theyve not played before).

So post your favorite builds here.

Edit: I'm not sure that we need to focus on the most absolutely optimal choices here. THis is about good, functional builds, not arguments over which choice is ideal at which level.

    Talents:
    Level 1: Sureshot
    Level 6: Coordinated
    Level 9: Shooter
    Level 12: Academics
    Level 15: Covert Ops Training
    Level 18: Brilliant
    Level 21: Field Ops Training

Dexterity's bonuses have heavy diminishing returns, so focus on just keeping it at the soft-cap for each level range, which is around +32% damage (200 total at level 40). Keep Intelligence at a level in which it will reach that same cap with Aucacity triple-stacked (~150 at level 40), and try to keep your Ego roughly equal to your Intelligence. Focus on putting the rest in Constitution, but Recovery can also be useful for alpha strikes as well as stronger energy building, and Presence can be useful for stronger Bountiful Chi Resurgence heals as well as lower threat in PvE teams. Endurance will always be outpaced by Intelligence for you.
Due to the reliance on Dodge this build has, it is extremely valuable to have a +Dodge/Avoidance upgrade item equipped.

The advantages Crippling Challenge and Nailed to the Ground are only necessary if you intend to PvP, but in that case they truly are necessary.

Use Two Gun Mojo to build Enrage, which will improve both Bullet Beatdown and Lead Tempest. This is typically unnecessary against weaker enemies, which you will just tear through, but can be a real help against bosses or other players.
Bullet Beatdown and Lead Tempest should each be used to tear apart groups while simultaneously defending yourself (because of Parry's Elusive Monk and Lead Tempest's Tread Softly). Bullet Beatdown is better used on tight groups if you have Enrage up, otherwise use Lead Tempest which has a fairly incredible max range. Also use Bullet Beatdown against melee targets for heavy damage + defense.
Not Without Incident is actually a superior damage boost for Bullet Beatdown than an extra rank under any circumstance, due to the fact that the AoE effect counts as an entirely separate attack and also hits the primary target. Even against a single target without Enrage it will be better.

Lock N' Load can be very good mixed with Lead Tempest to quickly wipe out a massive group of enemies, though Lock N' Load also helps greatly to take down tougher individual enemies.
The Two Smoking Barrels advantage only takes effect on each attack activation rather than each actual hit of the attack, meaning that a full Bullet Beatdown combo will only reduce the cooldown 4 times, rather than the 7 or so it would otherwise be, for a total of 8 seconds. It is still a very solid choice, and invaluable to allow Lock N' Load to be up more often against tougher enemies.

Inexorable Tides can be used to keep people off of you and disabled in melee, even tight groups of enemies, and can be a good lead-in for Bullet Beatdown. It can also be used to interrupt charged powers.

Holdout Shot is a great finisher for a Bullet Beatdown combo, since it will often leave you drained enough of energy for the extra damage and lower cost to trigger. Holdout Shot is capable of some amazing and dirt-cheap damage, so try to set it up often by blowing through energy.

Breakaway Shot can be used while Rooted to get some distance from enemies, or to escape quickly if an enemy is charging a Point-blank Area Attack (marked by the red circle over their head).
Breakaway Shot can also be a good lead-in for fights, since it does a fair amount of AoE damage and applies a nice damage reduction effect. If you start by leaping into the center of a group and activating it mid-air, you'll fly higher up rather than further away, since your targets will be beneath you.
Breakaway Shot has a high cost, and can also be effectively followed up with Holdout Shot, especially since Holdout Shot can be activated before you even hit the ground after flipping away, and looks awesome. This is especially effective if you used Breakaway Shot to open a fight, since you'll almost always be left with low enough energy to trigger Holdout Shot's extra damage.

Between Killer Instinct and Form of the Master, you'll gain a large amount of energy whenever you critical or dodge, both of which will be happening very frequently, so energy is not a large issue.
Form of the Master will also massively improve the damage of Bullet Beatdown and Inexorable Tides when you have Focus built up.

Bountiful Chi Resurgence, due to high Intelligence, can be double-stacked a little over one-third of the time by activating it whenever it's off cooldown in a fight. Double-stacking it is a massive benefit; not only will it trigger twice every second rather than once, but I believe it will trigger twice on every dodge as well.
Storm's Eye Prana may seem like a good advantage for Form of the Master to let you stack BCR even easier, but the way it works makes it only capable of at most ever cutting the cooldown in half. Super Intelligence will already allow you to maintain two stacks pretty often, and the nature of Storm's Eye Prana makes it less effective the lower the base recharge on BCR is. 3 Advantage points just isn't worth a potential reduction of perhaps 4 seconds, 6 at most.
Between Bountiful Chi Resurgence with Resurgent Reiki and Form of the Master, Masterful Dodge will give you 15 seconds of God Mode out of every minute, with nearly limitless health and energy, and almost immediately giving you a full 8-stack of Focus for massive melee damage.
Extra ranks in Masterful Dodge are complete overkill, and unnecessary.

An easy build for soloing and holds its own in instanced play. Very durable, and quick to kill with very little time spent building energy. On my character, the fire FX are colored the same as the toxic ones, so fire flight, immolation and Pyre's fire patch look just like toxic miasma emitting fumes.

This is an amazing idea. I know i can be a bit nervous with power choices myself. I think along with the build post, maybe a few instructions? You know, what to use when, playstyle recommendations, that kind of thing.

Maybe once you have quite a few, do some formatting by some sort of categories or framework. I have no clue how to do this, just a suggestion, I think a thread like this could be "Sticky" worthy.

    Level 18: Relentless
    Level 21: Amazing Stamina

This build is made to retcon into at level 40, and works very well if you plan on being the main tank to endgame lairs.

This build works amazingly well in solo situations, as well as when Tanking bosses in Lairs. However, it's weakness is in AoE aggro control, as that is more a weakness of Might than anything. For better AoE aggro management, Pyre makes for a good last power to fill in that gap. However, you still don't have Pre in the build so, it will be difficult regardless. Another option for your last power could be Howl, allowing you to keep your Enrage going permanently, even outside of combat - plus the fear decreases enemy damage, helping you survive even more.

When soloing, your job will be very easy. Against a Single Enemy, just use Uppercut to build stacks of Aggression, and use Enrage as necessary to stack Enrage. Your Single Target damage will kill most enemies in seconds. Against multiple enemies, Mighty Leap into the group, and use Roomsweeper or Havok Stomp to build some stacks of Enrage. Activate your Enrage power and Mighty Leap to any survivors, using your single-target combo to end them quickly, Mightly Leaping to each enemy in turn.

Hold aggro in Lairs will be a different story entirely. Your damage output will drop as you focus more on keeping enemies off your allies. In this case, you Shockwave to get enemies attention and draw them to you. Keep repositioning yourself so that you're hitting as many enemies as possible with Shockwave, and only occasionally use Roomsweeper or Havok Stomp as quick finishers - do not fully charge them unless you're sure they'll kill the enemies, as having your enemies spread all over the place will make your job of holding aggro difficult, but will also make DPSers job of killing things quickly more difficult.

To hold aggro against a boss, you're going to have to play around a bit to keep yourself alive and to keep all the correct buffs on you. First off, block often. Blocking with Ebon Void increases your damage resistance ,which will stack on top of your Defiance and your Inertial Dampening Field. Between Blocks, tap your Shockwave to gain the threat over time from it's Challenging Strikes, and spam Defensive Combo as much as possible to pile on the threat. Just make sure to turtle up and block at least 1 hit every 10 seconds to keep your Voracious Darkness at max stacks, and use Enrage whenever possible to add a bit of damage (along with threat) t your attacks.

For keeping alive, you should be using Conviction liberally, keeping yourself topped off with it. When low, just use Resurgence, and don't ever be afraid to turtle up behind your block. Voracious Darkness does have a chance heal you a bit every time you block damage, so between the mitigation that Defiance, Voracious Darkness and Inertial Dampening Field are giving you and the healing from Conviction and Voracious Darkness, death will be rare to come by.

    Level 18: Boundless Reserves
    Level 21: Amazing Stamina

This build is a level 40 retcon build. It can be used to solo, but many powers will need to be moved around, most notably Resurgence.

There's alot to this build, but it's all pretty simple once you gt the hang of it. You'll want to use your End Builder and Bite to apply bleeds to your enemies, then use Massacre to tear them apart. Massacre does ALOT of extra damage against bleeding enemies, and with continuous damage the Bleeds deal, the damage can quickly get out of hand.

Aspect of the Bestial, Howl, Enrage and Dragon's Bite will all help to improve your Sustained Damage. Aspect of the Bestial will keep itself going as long as you have it toggled. It will give you a stack of extra slashing damage every time you put a bleed on an enemy - something that your End Builer and Bite will have no problems doing. Make sure you're using Enrage and Howl whenever they are available to add even more to your damage, and the damage of your bleeds, and use Dragon's Bite against big enemies and bosses, to keep your bleeds going indefinitely.

Retaliation and Imbue are both added to the build so you can perform better Spike Damage. Make sure that when you want to use Massacre, to block an attack first to gain Retaliation's buff. This should get you well on your way to 4-5k Massacre-spams, and make sure to Imbue and Retaliate a Massacre every time you can once you've got all 5 stacks of Aspect of the Bestial and 8 Stacks of Enrage. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the DPS you're able to put out, even without the use of an Offensive Passive.

The Obsidian Pharaoh build - this superhero is designed to get agro, keep agro and survive it. He's also designed to make use of the growth mechanic from Engrage, just 'cos.

You'll be making extensive use of the Force Shield advantage, Force Sheath; tap block and release it, then rejoice as you carry on blocking for the next few seconds even while you attack. A healthy dose of crushing wave while the sheath is active will do decent damage while protecting the more fragile members of your group.

Enrage will improve your damage and help you stand out from the crowd and howl will fear nearby enemies while enraging all nearby allies. Protection field is great for both personal and team mate protection, so get generous with those bubbles.

Here are some thoughts on what is working for me, but remember, I don't build brawlers, I build shooters.

As soon as you finish the tutorial and go to the PowerHouse remove your charged attack and see what your alternatives are. You want something charged with extra abilities such as Taser Arrow which paralyzes, or a maintain, perhaps with a toggle option like Sparkstorm. Not every power set can do this, but usually there is something.

Avoid Acrobatics or Tunneling as your first movement unless you are very familiar with the game. When you are new flight gives you a height advantage that makes finding objectives much easier.

Early power additions should include a ranged area of effect circle, a close area of effect circle (possibly with knockback), a passive slot power that works in the mode you intend to use the most: attack, defense, support, or balanced, and preferably another ranged AoE, possibly a line attack to use as the mobs rush you. If you are going to melee a lot this should be a close power instead.

As soon as you know you like how each power works level it to rank 2 or add a modifier to make it stronger. Don't level a second time until you have three or four advantage points spare, then start to go back through and raise your most useful powers again. This means that from about level 15 to 25 every power you use will be ranked up once. If you are doing something unusual like a Healer or Pet Master you might trade a ranged or close AoE for a special heal or a pet summons.

By this point you have established your core character and any theme. You can branch out into support powers such as a heal, a pet, an energy form, a buff, or a crowd control power. You might want to add one tier three attack power for the big hit but your core attacks should already be enough for nearly every occasion.

By level 35 or so you can add any whimsy powers you have an interest in and retcon it back out if it isn't working well enough.

Any power you intend to use should be tested in the dummy rooms, especially the team training room, to see whether you like the feel of the power and how it works with your other powers. If this isn't possible, make sure it is on top where it can be removed with a minimum of cost and go out to try it some.

In the team room try to solo groups where the team setting is on two or three players. This will give you a much better feel for how your build handles being mobbed. From level 30 to 40 you should be able to progress from soloing the three player setting up to the five player setting. This is the proof that you have an effective combat build, at least for leveling and instance combat, it's not so much a measure for how you handle the big bosses but it helps.

I'm leaving a fair amount of this indistinct because it is hard to really ruin most characters if you catch and reverse out mistakes as soon as possible. If you reach 35 or so and it still isn't synergizing it's powers, then its time for the full retcon or delete and restart. I tried to show that there is a point in the mid 20's where you need to be very confidant of your core build before you start to add support powers that might not work so well together. Ideally by that time you are augmenting your character to strengthen general weaknesses not glaring problems.

    Emerald Streak - Power Suit 40, Storm Cloud - Force/Lightning 40, Seraphic - Celestial 29, Starshot - Archery 32

    The Hawk - mixed Archery/MA
Broad-stat build. SS DEX, you'll want points in STR, EGO and probably CON, and still some in REC, PRE and END.
Swinging + Flippin is a good travel power to stack more dodge/avoidance.

Generally, the build is in/out like a boxer - build your Focus, go in with TBL, strike with the Dragon's Claws, Evasive back out if necessary. Use Retaliation to build energy and set up nasty charged Torrent off Arrows or Dragon's Claws attacks. Remember you can move backwards while charging Torrent of Arrows.

    Explosive Arrow/WtK is optional.
Invuln+Form of the Tempest could be replaced by Defiance+Enrage for more ranged damage.
Could be a dual build with Quarry.

    The Sapper

    STR/INT/CON
    Tunneling
    Defiance
    Enrage
    Imbue
    Arcane Sigils

Tunnel -> turn off energy builder -> Enrage -> Imbue -> move to target -> pop out of ground -> Arcane Sigils

I really like it with Supernatural Power and Vicious Cyclone+adv, but the core is just those four powers.

This build requires a retcon at level 8 to get Dragon Kick in as soon as possible.

Slot a piece of + Dodge/Avoidance gear in your primary defense slot.

Use Evasive maneuvers to boost your dodge chance and Thunderbolt Lunge to get right back into melee.

Use Inexorable Tides and Dragon Kick to keep groups of foes controlled (and to get the Rush advantage from Dragons Kick) to reduce their damage output.

Burning Chi Fist for single target burst damage.

Remember to use Bountiful Chi Resurgence w/Resurgent Reikki whenever necessary (dont use when no t needed since this will reduce your damage output).

The Flippin' advantage on swinging comes into play when the TP is toggled on, you dont actually have to be in the air.

Overall this build will have tons of health, good energy management through Focus stacking and Rush, great control, and decent damage. On top of this your dodge stacking plus fast activating self heals will make you tough as nails.

At level 26, the question is to Gigabolt or not to Gigabolt. If you do, it's probably with Ionic Reverb.

Other areas to dabble - Various Electric attacks, Invocation of Storm Calling, Primal Sigils, Archery (two energy-damage attacks), Experimental Blaster.

This build draws primarily form Telekinesis and requires a quick RetCon once you first hit the powerhouse to swap Ego Weaponry for Ego Blade Frenzy. It's a bit interactive at later levels going between Evasive Maneuvers, Bountiful Chi Resurgence and Thunderbolt Lunge but overall the power management should not be overwhelming.

That's up to you. The build there uses Ego Blade mostly for theme reasons but it also helps since it works well as a Brawler. Running with Kinetic Darts gives you some minor damage at range but doesn't really buy you much else I think.

    Level 9: Sniper Training
    Level 12: Martial Training
    Level 15: Covert Ops Training
    Level 18: Shooter
    Level 21: Command Training

Right now I'm using Arms/Ordnance since Dexterity and Ego are the key stats for Munitions and the Solider Archetype. However, this seems to be about as good as Arms/Fighting Styles so far. If I don't see some good Dexterity and Ego gear popping up soon I may try switching again to Alien Metabolism.

Right now I'm working on Dexterity, and Ego gear with an eye towards Intelligence, Recovery and Presence in that order. Some of the best gear I've found outside of farming Serpent Lantern is from the Hero Games Store. While I'm not a fan of PVP I enjoy the Zombie Apocalypse and most of the gear is not that costly.

Any chance I could request a solo-power armor build? Really enjoying the survivability of my Infernal Supernatural's Devour Essence Pre/Dex build, but alt-itis is acting up!

    Cheers!

Edit: Am hoping for a survivable DPS-type, not really a tank... mostly solo so far, unfortunately.

This is what Puslewave recommends. His full guide to Power Armor and a number of builds can be found here: http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?p=1365953#post1365953

Thanks for the reply, Will, I actually found that post on my own and found it very helpful. Sifting through the guides has been nearly as rewarding as the game itself. :)

I find Darkness builds hard to find in here. I was wondering if anyone has an updated Darkness build they would like to share.

I second that; the frameworks and synergies sticky says it's up to date for f2p, but I don't think it is up to date with the darkness pass. I could be mistaken as I don't really stay abreast of the trends in the darkness power set.

Everything is up to date as of F2P. Darkness however has changed since then. I'm only human and can only test so much at a given time, so give me some time to update the new Darkness setup.

No problem Will, I was just looking for clarification. I thought it might not have caught up with the Darkness update since there is no mention of the new power or how Spirit Reverb now works.

Thank you for the prompt response, and I will look forward to the update.

Spirit reverb is good with a decent constitution, ebon ruin w\ adv is handy for any paranormal set (telepathy, sorcery, (celestial i assume aswell)) and especially good with the darkness pets. Ebon Ruin itself is ofc a great single target attack.

Fatal allure is less useful overall but still has a place as a bread n butter power

umm lifedrain obviously isn't quite as good as a self heal as it used to be thanks to the vampiric sympathy change. It is however surprisingly useful as an aoe heal for dark\telepathy hybrid dps\heal builds, or to help keep pets topped up.

Other than that F2P update still applies imo

My first attempts followed the guide pretty closely and I found darkness to be an energy hog; Spirit Reverb doesn't proc when you kill feared enemies anymore, and for it to proc you must do dimensional damage to feared enemies. I just couldn't find a lot of cheap dimensional damage to work as a substitute energy builder. I didn't have near enough energy to throw around the new darkness-defile power, so I was forced to re-evaluate my build and chose Con/End instead; it works ok but it is not easy to fill up that energy bar. Hence my question because it just seems like Dex/Con has to be very finely balanced to work, which is sad because that is one of my favorite stat combos.

I posted this in another thread, but it's relevant here as well. I tried to post something similar here earlier this morning but it timed out while typing and I was too tired to do it again! So here's my Darkness Houndmaster. Swap out the two wolf pets for Ritual of Ebon Summoning and Imbue, or some other buff, to go full Demonmaster. I didn't lay this out in a leveling format. Going down the shadow tree quickly starting with Shadow Embrace and Spirit Reverb. will help a lot early on. Get Void Horror and Summon Shadows quickly as well.

Respec as needed to flush out the build. For the new folks, remember its affordable to respec prior to level 23. You can easily have enough money from questing to respec several times. After 23 the price ramps up.

I run ss Con/Int, the support passive Aura of Primal Majesty r3, in sentinel role. This build easily solos elite difficulty pve content and melts bosses. In all Serpent Lantern(Very Hard) gear, it has over 10k hp and zero energy problems with 3 controlled pets out. I love it. It's way more action oriented than I thought a "support" toon would be.

PETS: I chose lots of black dogs. I took the Void Horror as well. It fit the theme and was in the shadow tree. Command Animals r3 and Ritual of Primal Summoning r3 were the wolf pets. I colored them all black. I chose r3 on the ritual pet because I only bring it out for bosses. I didn't find the big circle restraint to be a problem. If it is for you, go r2 with the unbound adv. Lastly I took summon shadows r3 with room to respec them to r2with the heal adv. when they get fixed. Command animals dot and debuff the target. The ritual wolf fears and enrages party with howl. The fear on the target buffs the void horror.

POWERS: I stayed primarily in the sorcery framework. I start with Ebon Ruin r1 with the debuff adv. I only use it for the debuff. I took Skarn's Bane r3 and Drain Life r3 as my main attacks. In sentinel, Drain Life r3 heals for 250-300 a tick. The summon shadows and drain life heals are the only two I have. I haven't found a need for more or an active defense. I picked up Circle of Arcane Power r1 for a little extra oomph during boss fights. Inertial Dampening Field rank 3 with stupid big super stats makes this build quite sturdy.

EXTRAS: As discussed in this thread, with AoPM r3 you can do fun stuff by changing a few pieces of gear. With a dex off. primary, you can have a 20% crit rate or higher with a 50% or higher severity. The crits at the end of Skarn's Bane maintain hit between 900-1000. That's pretty fun in sentinel role. You can also go with a big recovery item and be able to fully charge gigabolt or force cascade at will. Throw in imbue and that's also some big boom boom for a "support" toon. All in all, I love this set up. I hope others find it helpful as well! :D
