A "Default" Unranked Travel Power

How about, similarily to how we have the default "block", which is a bottom line, unranked block without fancy visuals, we had a travel power called "Sprint"

Sprint would use the stage 1 animation on Athletics, as that animation specifically looks like fairly normal sprinting. Sprint would only have that one stage, adding a slight speed increase on-ground.

What would this change? You would feel less forced to grab Athletics as the superior combat TP, as Sprint would do the r1 version, allowing you to grab Flight and a Teleport, whilst keeping that Athletics combat run-speed.

Sprint would obviously be weaker than even r1 Athletics/Acrobatics, but not only would it use a pretty sweet, practically unused animation, but it would let non-athletics users do more than a brisk jog towards peril!

[EDIT] For clarification, stage 1 is when you tap your travel power. Sprint would be stage 1 rank 1 athletics.

I really like this idea, and having it weaker than max R1 Athletics would mean nothing is made redundant by it.

    Good thinking there! =)

I mentioned this to Kais and I think she tried this animation with the Mach speed...but this idea is about what I meant.

That run animation is just much more pleasing to view that crash dummy face first run.

The speed boost spec you can get from the Protector tree is actually just enough speed (with 2 pts) to be useful in combat (like vs. Eidolon).
I think it is a 10% speed boost over default.

Just uses existing non-travel power animations, sped up by 10%.

This "default sprint" should just replace the normal walk. NttG and certain alerts that need to shut out travel powers could cancel it as well, but otherwise, people almost never use the basic walk. Having a default sprint would be a pretty good QoL inrease.
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).

I am not wholly opposed to this either, although I think issues may arise if the player is granted even more default mobility than we already have.

Though I'm not a PvPer, I see that mobility is pretty insane, even with the NttGs now and then, and I think making everyone have a movement speed that basically made it "CC or bust" for players that had charged powers, would make the PvP scene even more monotone and irreparable than it already is!

Having it as a tertiary starting TP does cause 3 travel powers at level 40, excluding device travels. This may be a problem, although at the same time it does increase the value of having the "builds" function, as you now could have travel power builds separated. Optionally, the game could just give us an extended action/hotbar as other games do, which would be another QoL improvement altogether.

Loving the consideration, feedback, and support!

Yeah, it could always be completely disabled for pvp. In fact, it probably should. I mainly wanted to see it as a replacement for default movement as a QoL thing--one less thing to feel like I need to activate, like driving an automatic vs stick shift.

    Snip

So long as it doesn't impact any content negatively, or somehow impact latency, then making it a base speed could be nice, yes.
In general, I don't seek one specific means of accomplishing this, if the idea were to be taken liking to by the devs, which is to say:

The execution could be whatever optimal, and I understand the importance not to make athletics feel redundant as well.

(With having this "sprint" be rank1+stage1, saying that it makes the superiority of athletics null would be a bit silly, but whatever!)

I'm reminded of the CoH days when the Fitness tree was changed from optional to an automatic addition to character builds. While there were debates about how unbalancing the change to energy management was, no one seriously complained about the relatively minor movement upgrades.

An issue I have with this is that people who already have Athletics, or Super Speed as a travel power get nothing from this. Sure, you could say "Oh but they already have the good travel power" but that's a bit of a misleading statement. Athletics is not "the good travel power", it's one of many good travel powers, and it's not so amazing that someone who has picked it should effectively get nothing while others are getting something on the basis that they already have a superior choice. Essentially your insistence that athletics is this amazing "above the rest" power needs to be abandoned, and instead if there were to be a default travel power then players should get a choice of either mini-athletics, mini-superjump, or mini-flight. Yes, this does open up the possibility that someone won't even pick mini-athletics despite not having super speed or athletics as one of their main travel powers, but if that's what someone wants then so be it - after all, they made that choice knowing full well the situations ahead of them and may be aware that you don't actually need athletics or super speed for any content in the game. Granted that's an argument for this entire mini-tp idea being unnecessary but obviously the idea here is to prop up people who did stuff like picking two tunneling powers or whatever combinations there are that make a few situations in the game difficult or impossible to survive.

As for making this the default movement speed, I see that being pretty unlikely since we have movement-oriented content that is balanced around the current default movement speed.

PS - as for "it would let non-athletics users do more than a brisk jog towards peril" it's silly to say that after you mention someone having teleport... since they could just swiftly teleport into peril and get there before anyone using your proposed Sprint.

I understand the reasoning behind the OP's original idea. However, I do have to agree that it could open up a bunch of unforeseen complications.
