Cloak Tower etiquette

I'm not here to judge you.

I'm not here to criticize behavior or suggest anything time-consuming or difficult.

Everyone who queues for the Cloak Tower dungeon one or more times a day wants a fast run. I understand that. I'm here to suggest that the fastest possible way to run a pug through there is also, frankly, the most polite:

KILL EVERYTHING AS YOU GO.

It won't slow down an overpowered group, and it saves a mixed group enormous amounts of time in the long run. For example: Huey (level 70), Zeppo (level 50) and Shemp (level 20) find themselves together at the start of CT. All three run, killing whatever orcs and ogres get in their direct path; they also must clear out certain areas in order to move past doorways. Poor Shemp is going to be challenged by whatever creatures the others run past, since almost by definition gaining levels means gaining speed, even if only by killing low-level creatures faster. Now, Huey is at the end, tapping the axe, and everyone else sees "Your Party is Waiting For You." Zeppo isn't far behind, but oh dear, poor Shemp has been killed by that pesky Eye of Gruumsh. Now he has to run from the respawn site, and he's alone, and that Eye of Gruumsh and whatever detritus the other two have outrun are waiting for him along the way. Two players are wasting time waiting, and one is facing some pretty steep odds...

...unless you KILL EVERYTHING AS YOU GO.

I mouse over my pug party before I start a CT run, and if we're all unstoppable, I'll run with everyone and only slow down long enough along the way to take a shot at a random R5 drop. If we have levels in the party not likely to survive a solo run against the stuff we could outrun, then I'll make sure that they won't have to outrun anything. In the end, it will speed things up for everyone.

Instead of inspecting individually, I open the social menu (hotkey O), tab over to "my party". If members are all 70 or fairly high level, I book it. If members are lower level, I babysit, because I'm not in that much of a rush, and spoiling their dungeon leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Sometimes lower level party members also book it, in which case my escort runs at their speed.

I hadn't thought of doing that, I have been inspecting individually like the OP. Nice tip, although inspecting individually also shows if they have artifacts from level 70 alts.

I'll admit to sometimes forgetting that not everyone hops over the tilted bookcase though.

I wait at the bookcase. Either that shows them how to do it if they didn't know, or shows me which way they're going to go.

When I run a dungeon I make sure that I have line-of-sight to whoever is in the back. If the speedrunner ahead has to wait, so be it.

I don't typically wait around, but I also kill as I go. In CT, if I'm waaay ahead at the bookshelf, often I go the "long" way round just in case. There aren't any other gotchas in CT, so lower level folks usually just have to run the length, sometimes completing the whole run with 0 damage since I usually 1-hit the bosses. I even wait around to kill the drudges that come out of the wall... Probably not much fun for a someone doing CT at lvl 12 legit - but.... Well... Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat... AD doesn't farm itself!

My main sports the Leaves No One Behind tag and i play like it says. I approach each lv dungeon with a speed run in mind, but i always wait for a slow player and bypass shortcuts if the slowpoke does too.

What gets me is when the speed demon of the group doesn't feel the NEED to fight the mobs along the way. Yet somehow they NEED th r5s that drop when we stragglers do fight the mobs.

Level your alts to temple of spider range and never look back. You run all the other non epic dungeons 1 time for the experience of the content. This game is purely a time crunch since its currency is time based. The faster you get things done the more currencies you will get. Nobody runs CT other than a few idiots who are too lazy to level to ToS level range, or new players who don't realize this games broken currency system. The sooner you learn to train to the end of lairs and dungeon progression blockers, the sooner you will unlock content and gear and then realize this games horrendous currency system.

I would suggest anyone at 70, just do temple, if you are doing the 3 man stuff.. that way the lowest they are at 50 .

Avoid CT, that would be the best thing to do.

I also suggest that frankly at 70, with minimal investment and correct builds, you could also just pug queue kr instead.. but whatever.

I ask pardon in advance for using your quote. I am not trying to target you personally. I apologize if it comes off that way.

What about those who play for fun instead of currency? There are players like that and telling them, "You must be this tall and play it this way, then leaving them in the dust does not lead to a fun experience for everyone, especially those who only have time to play once or twice a week for an hour or so and are not in a guild and would like to try these dungeons. Not everybody play speed run for AD. They deserve to have fun playing their style too.

Besides, if you kill absolutely everything in the dungeon and you have Dragon Hoard Enchantments and/or Wanderer's Fortune you can get more refinement stone drops. =] Every good adventurer knows you have to kill everything and remove the nails from the stuff nailed down and take it. Dungeons must be barren corridors and rooms in the wake of an adventuring party. It's the rules!

How about mr. Moron the Bot, who always run into walls and do not respond to any chat?

I also encountered someone who definitely was running 2 avas through TOS, almost the same handle and one of them was put on follow. Probably on two computers, main stopping from time to time so the "shadow" could follow suit if it died or needed to jump.

Get their info and report them.

I run through Cloak Tower every now and then on all my toons when I need a quick 80k AD. Takes about an hour to get them all through twice, but I don't always pay attention to the time required, I just roll through. For the last few weeks/months, I've run a little ways, AOE blast, run a little ways, AOE blast, until I get to the end. I noticed a trend lately where TR and SW players especially, but others do as well, just run through everything and wait for it to arrive at the door, then kill everything really quick. I actually had one scold me for killing things as I ran. So I tried it on my SW. I ran to the door, dropped a POP, then fired a dreadtheft towards the group running toward me. Things dropped super quick and I never had to push another button. The other two players weren't far behind, but one got mad at me and had something to say at the end. So, darned if you do, darned if you don't. I'm just going to play the game the way I want, and help out the obvious lowbies. Anyone else can fly a kite.

If you so wish to explore these things you could A. form your own groups (this seems like a foreighn concept to many) or B. wait until after its run, then go back and look at every nook and cranny)

once you do it like 2 times, are you telling us that you again have to explore the same area over and over? I dont get that..

  • venuslightheartvenuslightheart Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 50 Arc User
Most low-level player or Item Level players are Alts with the main toon at level 70. They want to get through as fast as the level 70 toon. Shemp (level 20) might want to enjoy the scenery and role-play but Curly (Level 20) want to get through as fast as possible too.

There is a public channel dedicated to CT runs for serious players grinding through all the toons as quickly as possible, speed run. The channel is recent. You can PM me in the game.

Out of curiosity, why CT and not ToS? To accommodate even lowbie alts?

Because I can one/two-shot everything in CT, including the bosses. I don't need to train & nuke, I just hold down the LMB and run. If I get the same amount of AD out of it, I'll go for what seems (to me, anyway) to be the lowest hurdle.

    Ah, Cloak tower.

I remember my first time attempting to do that dungeon (of course, it was like last week, so not surprising). Apparently I had logged into a group already in progress, (no idea if they had been trying to do it with only 2 people and found out near the end they didn't have enough, or if somebody had bailed on them, or what. IIRC there was no wait whatsoever, I hit join queue and got the prompt), so I finish the load, and get a message something to the effect "hurry up and sprint to the end, we're waiting".

Ok, so I start following the little glowing line. I'm pretty much ignoring all the monsters, though some are taking a chunk out of me. (most seemed to be dead though, so I wasn't getting particularly low on health running along), and AFAIK there is no sprint button, but I'm a Trickster rogue, and from my own tests I'm fairly positive that my little dodge roll is faster than normal movement, so I'm using that whenever I have enough stamina, and I'm finally getting to where I think I'm getting reasonably close, (and experience since then tells me I *was* close), when bang. Loading screen out of the dungeon.

Now, I'm not sure if they got tired of waiting and kicked me, or if the dungeon somehow timed out, or whatever. But I'm pretty sure that is *not* the way to run the dungeon. (I didn't notice any sort of kick in the chat, but I was sort of concentrating on running)

Anyways, I now have a collection of items I keep around in inventory purely to maximize my movement speed for if/when that ever happens again.
  • greywyndgreywynd Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 7,155 Arc User
If you get kicked it goes to the load screen, sending you back to where you came from.

Well, then I guess I hope they enjoyed waiting for the next sucker in the queue to run almost the entire path all over again. Assuming they weren't just getting their jollies by kicking people when they got close.

    Dumb topic.

I have done at least 900 runs (sometimes things go wrong and need to do more per day) in the past 90 days and I kill the mobs and run to the end and these slow party members pm me with insults as if I did something wrong. We are forced to do things like cloak tower runs because of the dumb limit of 36k on our main of AD per day. There's no way we're going to get gear in a timely manner with that restriction.

It's the first dungeon and it's incredibly easy. Who cares, really if someone speed runs it?

And yes, the people who needlessly and/or randomly boot you from cloak are idiots. I like to contact their alliance and/or guild leader and make complaints. The last time someone did this to me they actually got kicked out of the alliance they were in. They were the leaders of the guild and wearing the alliance tag so nobody in their guild could do anything about their behavior but the leader of their alliance just decided to remove them from it.

I recommend getting Shadowplay set up so you can record the last X minutes of gameplay AFTER the fact. That way if someone does boot you wrongly from the dungeon you can hit a hotkey and grab the recent gameplay via video file then prove they did you wrong.

if some random pug PM'd me with insults for running to fast or too slow, I'd tell them to kiss my <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font>, put them on ignore. if they kick me, whatever, these runs are only like 10m or so. No reason to screw around taking abuse from some jerkwad.

The same, again and again. Ppl complain about poor leveling players sucked into speedruns, when in reality 90% of the ppl running them are lvl 70 or low level alts grinding RAD. And another 5% bots and cheats.

I get complains, if I run to fast, I get complains, if I kill all mobs, I get complains, if I dont kill all mobs, I get complains, if I dont run fast enough (seldom).

Ppl insult you, if you dont play the way they deem to be proper, saying 'this ins a MMO' do as the other player says. Well, this is a MMO, I am one of the other players and I play it the way I want, you can do the same. I dont assume, that the other players are obligated to carry me, I contribute to every run I join.

I have a few 3k+ chars and a multitude of LS alts with class artifacts etc at 2-2.5k. 4 of them even have the twisted weapon set as a result of EDemo farming on my mains. I DONT run TOS and POM with them, bc I dont want to make other players help me grind ADs.

If you dont like my style, ASK me to change it, give me a valid reason and I will do. If you insult me, you will get the same in response.

Ppl fail in FBI or CN and blame the tank, the heal or the DDs, but they fail to see, that they lack the proper build or gear to contribute. Some are just greedy, some lack the basic understanding of the games mechnic, but most ppl complaining should look into the mirror, before they blame other ppl.

gnatb, most likely they were capable of duoing the boss and decided not to wait. As soon as you got kicked the countdown to enter the arena would have started allowing them their RAD faster than if they continued to wait. Not defending this, just saying that they

I think it's plain rude to run through everything, leaving the party behind, and quickly slaughtering the bosses when others are too far away to get the seals bonus from it. When you don't have good gear yet, the seals can be handy. I'm not saying let everyone do some damage...but at least stay near the group.

If everyone wants to run, that's fine...if you're one that wants to do that, I suggest asking in party if everyone is ok with that first, or if you want to group them up to blast them with AoE, let everyone know that's your plan so they can help out with the strategy.
