Armor Enchants and fashion

shiani1shiani1 Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 318 Arc User
I know this has been brought up before, but now that all the fashion sets and dyes are in the t-bar store, people are playing more with fashion. It's really annoying to put a little thought and time into getting a look you want for a character and then getting out of the character window to see that nothing you did can actually even be seen because the armor enchant is covering it all. It would be awesome if the fashion tab was excluded from the armor enchant effects.

+1. I totally agree. If they can hide the Doohickey while wearing fashion, I don't see why they can't hide the armor enchant effects.

Interestingly since last mod (I think) now if you have the enchant effect and you activate the mount the enchant effect will be disabled. But if the enchant effect is timed to be enabled after you on the mount the effect will be enabled, for example is SF procced and then you mounted you will became a black cloud after the SF CD.

It means that somewhere there when mounting there is something that deactivates the enchant shader if it's enabled.

What they should do is to remove armor and weapon enchantment slots from gear, and add them to your character itself, on the character sheet. Give those slots a drop-down that allows you to "disable visual". For balance purposes, retain the cost to unslot these enchantments if you no longer wish to use them and remove them intact, and perhaps add a disable/enable function for gear below a certain level, quality, or total item level, if balance becomes an issue.

Trouble is, and I can't remember from where exactly I got the numbers: 90% of MMO customers are while males aged 15-25. These favour visuals over anything. Like their attidude towards femals. At 15 the looks are all it takes. At 18 some begin to think, that the looks might be not all that important. At 20 some come to conclude that beauty may deceiving. Now, some need get 50 years old so as to get the insight they should have had at the age of 18. And looking at the legacy intellectual property that the Forgotten Realms has become to, I'm not sure about the age of average customer. Maybe it is all sufficient to say, that the graphical designers are in their twens, and they want to make sure, that their average customer can show off what he, 15-25 years old, has accomplished. So we get phantasy disturbing blimblim graphics for effects and avatars.

I'm all for toning the effects down. At least as an option. I don't care for visual "I have it" signs. Or as Unrepentant has had it: Changing items and stuff is easy, changing people is not. All I care for is friendly and respectfull teaming up, which I am happy to report most of the times is as I wished for. And I'd be happy, if peops would could consider the idea, that roleplaying as in MMORPG does not end in DPS and DSP and some more DPS, so as to get items to do more DPS, but is about fictional characters in some strange world and their story therein. The underdark story campaign did shift focus back to story mode, and I appreciate it. It is my believe, that a MMO cannot breath with story going short, whereas for MOBA some "Urrgh" "Ahhh" "Hhhh" "I feel pretty, oh so..." is sufficient for 15 min battle arena.

completely disabling the armor enchantment won't probably never happen cuz there's some real reasons for.

But here's an idea which could be implement:

    - So when your character are "out of combat" is your armor enchant disabled / no visuality.
    - When you "enter combat" is your armor enchantment " activated and visible" till you are out of combat again.

So basically when you are doing social things/ hanging out on PE or something like that
you can enjoy your characters look.

While I do not entirely understand the mechanics for it, I have seen answers in an AMA or an interview or *somewhere* that indicate that altering/disabling these enchantment visuals is actually not simple at all, which makes me think that the visual effect and the enchantment's actual power are bundled into some kind of package of code, and they can't just shut off the animation without completely shutting off the enchant, at least not without redoing them.

I would love this, but it's been asked so many times during the years that it seems unlikely to happen. I would even prefer not having any weapon/armor enchantment effects at all in the game over Negation's 90s glitter lava lamp look, even if Bronzewood and the Frost enchants look nice to me.

I wasn't talking about the effects of the actual armor. I was talking about the armor enchant effects that spill over to the fashion gear. Just clarifying :)

Thanks for the info. So it looks like changing the visuals is an easier way because they wouldn't need to worry about the bundled code issue (if that's the issue).

The strange thing is, they are disabled when mounted up, so the package (that the skeleton crew inherited from a previous developer) is probably accepting *on mount* as *disable visual* while ooc.

I like the idea of "turnng down" the enchant visual while in fashion gear.
  • silvergryphsilvergryph Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 740 Arc User
I definitely want a way to tone down or turn off these effects. I have enchants sitting in my bank unused simply because I can't turn off their effects. I use enchantments that are less suited to my builds because they don't look horrid. I have characters that run with no weapon or armor enchant at all because I spent a great deal of time customizing their appearance and can't find one that works visually. If we can't get a toggle, then I would even prefer that the enchant only turns on in combat, even if that meant a few seconds where they didn't work at all.
  • silvergryphsilvergryph Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 740 Arc User
And/or give us some new enchants with no visuals.

You could make 6 right off the bat that add to each ability score. For example, a Strength Enchantment. Make 12 just by making each available as both armor and weapon enchants. Make even more that give a bonus to 2 or 3 ability scores.

Further, give us the option to use an armor enchantment slot as a defensive slot and a weapon enchantment slot as an offensive slot. If I want to see my armor, I'll just stick another Radiant in there.

The other thing I'd really like to see, regarding fashion, is the ugly ace bandage bra dealt with. I love some of the elemental armor looks as transmutes, but so often an armor piece looks great till you try it on and see that bra sticking out all over. My suggestion would be to either design sets so they actually cover the bra (limiting) or at least have the bra take on the color of the armor when it's equipped. Or maybe even have the bra disappear when clothes are on and only appear when they aren't on. It seems like such a picky little thing, but I know that the artists had to put a lot of time and creativity into all the sets of clothing, and not only is it "sub-optimal" for players who are interested in attaining certain looks, but it's not fair to the artists when the end result is so unattractive.

I believe that when mounted your custom dyes are also disabled. I noticed that it is more than just the enchant visuals that are different. This, though, could give them some easy workaround if the other possibility is too involved, but I don't know.

In my opinion, the bandage underwear is appropriate for the medivial themed NWO. But then, I confess, it is only very rarely I get jealous at somebody. Funny I'm jealous at NPCs.

That could be it, there is certainly something different about it but I am partially color blind so sometimes trying to figure out just what it is and also trying to describe it is problematic. It can be so frustrating at times as to drive me to "seeing red", but then again I can't see red so...

Another solution - let them make 2 versions of the same enchant - one with the original effects and one that has alpha channel on 0 or transparency on 255 or whatever and let players change their enchants with that

We know they can add enchants to the game (Dread/Shadowclad) so simply add for example "Of invisible negation" - with transparency 255 as color - i know i would like that.

So, do I get spaghetti bras for my seductive warlock? Like M’tari Prin’tal has? From some very talented clothing wizards? Without it all being disturbed by disco effects? Preeetty please!
    Oh well, just kidding.

Maybe something like chosing the appearance for companions could fit in here? Like, tone down the visuals of an enchantment to personal preferences? Hmm, yes, it also could tone down the greed spreading from aiming towards empowerments. If I'd have to choose from power or visuals, I'd choose visuals. I, we, spend quite a lot of time looking at it.

Transmuting the shirt and pants to the "invisible" look still leaves the bra and underpants on. I haven't noticed any problem with the bottom half in terms of that "showing", but the bra is a constant issue.

Use nude mod for fix this. Perhaps similarly will replace animation of enchantment if someone makes a similar mod.
