I bought a Varanus, and am still using it. This is because Science, never enough Science. Also the repair platform is kind of neat. Saving up for the fleet version... if that could be qualified as a new ship.

Just like cruisers, they have too much turn rate too. While we're at it, their weapon and shield power should be lowered, by like... -20. All that science equipment draws power, and they are meant to be shooting science, not tanking or dealing damage.
