....wow. So there isn't any useful way to search bridge officers. Searching by species doesn't actually provide you a useful filter, other than just getting 400 human results. Erm, yes, I had forgotten to speak to the admiral, so I did get a ship token, so, uh, disregard that part. I evidently had a brain TRIBBLE! I went directly to the ship yard, and when I didn't have a ship token, I automatically assumed that was because my sub had run out. Doh!
