This one drove me nuts. Press E to accelerate (check your keybinds if you changed them for the key to use).

What version of Windows are you using? I would say if you're getting BSOD that would be more a problem with your graphics card going bad or the drivers need to be updated. XP but especially Win7 do a much better job of not BSOD'ing on random junk but it tends to go back to a hardware issue like graphics or the memory…

Oh, one extra thing I just noticed, Safe Mode must reset much of your video settings to lower quality to help you log in. Go to Risa and notice how ugly it may look now, then go under Options and re-tweak your Video settings back to where you want them.
