New patch (25/07/ crashes on startup!

phalanx01phalanx01 Member Posts: 360 Arc User
Seems like the new "patch" screwed up more then it's fixing. Everytime I run the game, it goes to the ingame loading screen with Cryptic on it, crashes and displays a bogus message (Fatal Error) that sais:

Fatal Error: Unable to find default animation for sequencer Sto_Elachi_Drone_Overlay. You must add the flag "DefaultSequence" to one (and only one) Sequence!

-> Ticket number is 20286080

Ok... this is a very, VERY stupid scripting error then. Must be more people out there with the same crash. I'll attempt a full reinstall but I can tell you here and now that I am NOT a happy camper! Cryptic, FIX your mess, don't make it worse!

yes I too am having this problem... and restarting the computer did not help. it has now been almost an hour since the server went back up and the game crashes on the criptic loading screen with the same error message. It seems for every one thing they fix during a patch, another two things go wrong. get it together criptic!

Small update: It's got something to do with disabling on-demand patching. I tried it again from a clean install (disable the patching) and during it's download process it halted twice. I launched the game and got the very same error displayed.

I just finished downloading the game again and not disabled on demand patching and it works. Looks like some piece of code was badly compiled or something like that...

And do you wanna know the big surprise? After you're finished patching, GAME WILL NOT WORK.

Ops, maybe I should have put *spoilers*....

At this point, I will suggest to fire even who was in charge to select them in first place.

Well at least I got the game working for me again, but it just doesn't bode well for the future... I am NOT going to fix Cryptic's mess up every time there's a patch...

I too am beginning to suspect that it's simply beyond their ability to code a damn thing well.

It's incredible how a team who crafts such beautiful stories, art, gameplay, simply fail epically on the technical side AND do not possess the balls to answer.

However things are, this must end now, the game is simply broken. Fire and assume whoever you need if necessary, but fix this damn bag of TRIBBLE.

Yesterday, I started getting the game crash every time after pressing Engage on the launcher.

Here's what seemed to fix my specific problem, hopefully this will help some others.

    ---

    1. If the launcher crashes after pressing Engage, you will probably have two programs still running in the background: GameClient.exe and possibly crypticError.exe. If you try to run the launcher again it will now be stuck at "Patching" instead of getting you to the Engage button.

Solution: If you're not comfortable with using Task Manager to stop these two programs, a simple reboot will get rid of them. But they will show up on each launcher crash so keep an eye out for them if the launcher crashes on you.

    ---

    2. With the launcher started and logged in, I clicked Options and selected Safe mode and Force Verify. The first Force Verify gave me an error message on a file in use (not sure if it was because I didn't follow my own step #1 above), so I tried it second time and it now works.

Solution: Click Options, click Safe mode, click Force verify and Engage.

After this, I exited the game completely, started launcher again and clicked Engage with no Options change and I seem to be back in business.

    ---

    3. If you can't even get the launcher to run, there's another thread that has the official link to download Star Trek Online.exe and some tips that might help sort it. I didn't have this problem, so I can't confirm. I did download Star Trek Online.exe from the official site originally, but I don't think that was my original problem.

    ---

    Good luck!

Oh, one extra thing I just noticed, Safe Mode must reset much of your video settings to lower quality to help you log in. Go to Risa and notice how ugly it may look now, then go under Options and re-tweak your Video settings back to where you want them.

The patch is doing things to my computer, too. Every time I try to start the launcher, the patch causes my computer to BSOD and shut down. I don't know if I should uninstall it or not.

Thanks for the kind answer, haikyo808. ;)

However, I have no launcher crash: it's the game that crashes, just a few seconds after showing the Cryptic logo.

Also the launcher is "invisible" (infamous issue, see topic) ie minimized.

Using Arc it will automatically login and I can patch, stop or engage by hitting the enter key.

But I am unable to click around options such as Force-Verify, I already thought of it and unluckily cannot even try.

And no, the workaround suggested by a user

    - and still the only one in existence, with no official solution from the devs that only rely on this -

didn't work for me, even after many tries.

SO I'm still stuck in a await for a fix that likely will not come if more people get to report the issue. :(

Hey, if the launcher can actually run but is minimized or invisible, I'm puzzled that solution of using Task Manager doesn't make it visible for you?

    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showpost.php?p=10865461&postcount=11

There's Maximize and Bring To Front (also Switch To) on the Task Manager Applications tab for each program listed and the launcher will be "Star Trek Online". Cuz, otherwise it must be doing some other dumb thing for you. Sorry to scratch your old wounds if you've tried all those. :)

I remember a long-standing rare problem with Windows where if something is off the screen or not drawing, you just have to poke it a bit with Task Manager or another program to get it to reset. Some a window gets persisted in a weird state and uninstalling doesn't always clean the settings out of Windows desktop configuration.

What version of Windows are you using? I would say if you're getting BSOD that would be more a problem with your graphics card going bad or the drivers need to be updated. XP but especially Win7 do a much better job of not BSOD'ing on random junk but it tends to go back to a hardware issue like graphics or the memory chips.

You can check your memory with a program called Memtest, but I would look first at your graphics card, see if it's full of dust and overheating and whatnot. Not saying Cryptic is faultless, but that's the first thing I would look at. Cryptic stuff should just crash without BSOD.

Also, I think the launcher is using Internet Explorer browser widgets, so even if you don't use I.E. you should always let Windows Update fix all the security holes and whatnot.

As I said I already tried that workaround various times with no results.

What really pisses me off is NOT the issue itself - you know, problems happen - but the lack of any response from the staff, even when solicited.

That's not serious on their part.

C'mon, there's a time-limited prize and in the final days people cannot play at all, and you keep silent?!?

Sorry it isn't working, man. I think we're all resigned to not getting any timely answers from Cryptic or PWE, sadly.

The only other thing to try if you feel adventurous and want to spend the time: Uninstall Internet Explorer and then install the current version from Microsoft. If it's not directly visible in Uninstall in Add/Remove Programs, go to View installed updates and find the item under Microsoft Windows category, Windows Internet Explorer xx. (I have IE 10 under Win 7 right now).

Don't enable any addons in IE and see if STO launcher works. If that doesn't do it, one last check in Windows Update for IE updates and another STO launcher try would be my last ditch attempt at it.

    Buena suerte!

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. And my grahpics card shouldn't be going bad and my drivers shouldn't need to be updated because it's new, very new. But I'll try that, thanks.

And hey, not to be rude, but Cryptic's first priority just might be solving the problem, not talking with everyone about it.

I'm having this issue with my desktop, too.
Laptop however works "fine". Well, as fine as it can with like 3x3cm of actual game window left from all thew UI blocking my view on the tiny screen.. xD

Workarounds so far didn't do a thing.

I had this issue as well, after a complete reformatting....here's what I did:

-Right clicked on the Star Trek Online Icon, selected properties

-Clicked on the compatability tab, checked off "Disable visual themes", "Disable desktop composition", "Disable display scaling on high DPI values"

That basically turns off windows Aero for STO, and aside from some slightly flatter colors, really doesn't impact the overall look at all. Also I haven't had a BSOD since.

I just get randomly dc'd alot more than I did before the patch, which I suppose is an improvment...

I will surely not been formatting my whole PC after a fresh one to counter a problem THEY caused and they don't give a damn to care of.

They broke the game with the latest update, they should have been released a fix by days.

The last time they did, now people is getting accustomed to their incompetence/indifference.

That's why they don't give a damn to take care of what they broken.

CRYPTIC fix the game you have broken for so many!

IF we will will lose the first prize because YOUR BAD WORK impeded us to partecipate, you'll see!

You think you can get away with this too, but ^THIS^ will make you into BIG TROUBLE! Way bigger than acting NOW.

You'll better trust me and listen to my words.

How do you think people would get losing a top-soughted prize
only because YOU impeded them to partecipate with NO reason beside of YOUR error?
