Personally I think it would have much more sense, and allowed for better motivations, if the Abramsverse had been set in the future rather than the past. I'd have also said that the hero crew were simply descendants of the TOS crew, aboard a brand-new Enterprise.

That's already been done. NX class can have 2 digit registries, Daedalus class can have 3 digit registries. TOS-era vessels, or T6 counterparts with the TOS skin applied, can have 4 digit registries.

Also, slightly off-topic but the devs went to the trouble of creating TOS space & ground equipment for Marks 1 to 9, only to have them become unavailable after the time-jump. That is another reason for the TOS ESD to be re-visitable.
