Ship damage in PVE ?

Was this always a thing that could happen? Because of all the years playing I never took damage in PVE stories if I blew up a few times. Is this something new to the game? I thought it only happened in PVP.

No. Its always been a thing, specifically tied to difficulty setting. On Normal you don't take any damage debuffs on either space or ground. Advanced you start taking damage debuffs on death.

However its easy to take care of as long as you have components and regenerators. And you can use them right out of your bank even in mission so you don't even need to carry any with you.

So I have my setting set to normal but when I queue for pugs they can set difficulty to something else without me knowing?

You mean TFO's ? You set them at either Normal, Advanced, or Elite. You don't go into a queue other than the difficulty setting you are on. You get basic rewards on normal, and on advanced and elite the dil reward increases as do other rewards.

Aren't the difficulty settings for stories and TFO's found in two different places?

You can still get damage if your main game setting is Normal and you choose Adv or higher in PvE queues. The main game setting only affects story and patrol content, not PvE queues.

OK thanks all but I still think its strange that after all the years I played this is the first time I took so much damage on my ship.

I have been thrown into advanced tfo's when hitting the random tfo button with settings on normal. That can happen, shouldn't but does.

That has to be it. There is a tick box that I never notice to make sure I only get picked for normal.

It is still a good idea to have repair components in your bank just in case, sometimes the game throws you into advanced when you que up for normal even with that checkbox checked (though that is rather rare).

In fact, it also does that occasional one-step-higher bug when queuing for advanced, which caused quite a bit of outrage a little while ago when people unexpectedly ended up in elite level TFOs (which require extremely high DPS and fail if you miss any of the stuff that is optional in the lower two levels, and also have a time limit to get the scenario done), with general purpose ship builds that could not generate enough DPS (and often spent most of the time waiting to respawn on top of that). I have never heard of a two-step jump though, so going from normal to elite is probably not something to worry about.

I've never had a mis-queue (with respect to difficulty) in almost 14 years of game play so it seems good fortune has smiled upon me.

I have had it happen as often as 4 out of ten random ques. It was another factor to why i quit hitting the random button. The other factor was when there is a endeavor for a tfo, that can be up to two days for the top endeavor, i kept getting the same tfo over and over with no cool downs. Makes the random button not so random and kinda a drag to sit and do the same tfo over and over. Before that started happening i'd sit there and hit the random for a few hours at a time.

It may not feel like its random, but it actually is. Its not like you spin a roulette wheel and it sends you on whatever it lands on. In a way the Random button queues you up for everything, and whichever one fills up first is the one you go on. Which does mean that if certain TFOs are more popular at the time they will be the ones to pop most often.

I do agree that getting the same one over and over is annoying though.
