The Server Lag Is Much Worse Than You Think

I know it's a pretty common community complaint that the servers are bad, but tonight I hit miraculous repairs three times and I wasn't healed, even though it went on cooldown, and even though I survived for 30 some seconds afterwards. I don't know if something's happened recently, but the server lag lately is worse than it's ever been before, and it's making the game much harder to play - and much harder to have fun playing. In fights, it's normal for me to have to click an ability 2-3 times at least once before the game registers the input, and sometimes things will go on cooldown but not apply its effect to me. Tonight's worst offender was CSV. There's not a reason on my end for this kind of terrible performance. My computer's specs are extremely good, my internet connection is excellent, I don't share my internet with other people, and I live in the same country as the servers. My ping right now, according to netgraph, is a reasonable 99. I'd hate to imagine what it's like for anyone over in Europe.

Do the devs know the server is failing this badly? Who are they paying to host the game right now? I don't know that this is the right place to post this, but I want this to be on their radar as a major issue seriously impacting the whole playerbase.

Trying to do elite coordinated runs is very hard as well, Npc's despawn, abilities not going off ect, more or less stated as above. Far as the Dps seen goes the server stability in this department is in the toilet. We can spend hours on a TFO trying to get that 1 perfect run and thats why most people dont think its worth it anymore and have left the game. As a lifetime sub and someone thats spent alot of money in the game can we get a month off from makeing new ships, to shift resources over to fixing server stability? also due a search for lag and it comes up with 1340 pages. Devs that should tell you something.

I am on the East coast of Australia and have been a lifetime sub member for over 10 years, and yes the server is at a all time low indeed! Getting booted off every 20 minutes is not exceptable and has been happening for months now. There is nothing wrong at my end either as this is the only game that disconnects online over and over again now. This sever certainly needs paid attention!

Although the server has been good to me so far with the current event, I did have the same issue as you did with CSV during the previous two events.

It repeatedly failed to apply itself even though it's part of my "basic offensive rotation" keybind along with Photonic Officer 2, EPtW 3, and APB 1.

At this point cryptic knows very well of server issues cause of how many people complain, they just decide to ignore it as most players don't suffer the issue cause they don't hit their abilities, don't fire that much etc. The server issue got worse when they switched to some amazon servers around last year iirc, recently they have gotten worse but that could be cause of the new content and events attracting more players, more players more stress to the super weak servers. There are probably other issues causing the lag tho, like the game is bloody ten years old and is running on spaghetti code. I think that if they fixed it would probably give them more player engagment tho, which means more players entering the game and doing things, so more matrix and more players means more money for them, so if they fix some of the issue like servers and tweak the code it would probably be very profitable for them.

I have noticed the lag with activating BOFF abilities. I recognize Cryptic doesn't own the servers, and I can only imagine the interactions they have with the IT department for an IT department, but many live in the US which has trash internet speeds and throttling sites because we prefer proxy wars in Ukraine and Taiwan rather than access to information and entertainment.

Guys, issues with server lag and connectivity are not game play bugs. You need to post issues regarding server lag under PC, NETWORK, AND OTHER TECHNICAL ISSUES. Gameplay issues are for missions ingame where for example you have doors not opening. Unable to kill specific people, character not spawning correctly etc.

I don't know, I click a boff ability, the ability doesn't go off, but does start it's cooldown. That sure seems like a gameplay bug to me. And who knows how many mission/TFO bugs with doors not opening/NPCs not spawning/mission flags not triggering are caused by the same server lag that's causing the ability mis-fires.

The game performance is abysmal, I am no longer counting when I get a misfire, I am counting now when something works for a change.

I disagree, though I see I've already been moved. As I clearly stated, and g0del so eloquently articulated, poor server performance is causing bugs. Everyone has stories of abilities misfiring, specifically that they go on cooldown without applying their intended effect. That is not WAI.

I expect that there are many more bugs caused by poor server performance, which explains why the internal testing team can't reproduce them. I suspect the recent uptick in bug reports regarding patrol and mission objectives getting "hung up," as if the server never receives the information that they've been completed, or a delay in data delivery causing objectives to get flagged as completed but in the wrong order locking all progression owe themselves to the failing server infrastructure.

And I don't think this is just a PC problem. Console players, please chime in even though this thread has been moved here.

Not sure that's right as there are three types of lag. There is lag from network and server issues. Then there is lag from gameplay and mission bugs and there is lag from UI and graphics. For example the Risa lag a few years ago was due to the mission map bug. The Kemo lag from a few years ago was due to gameplay issues. Neither of that lag was due to network or server.

Even on Xbox it's getting terrible with all forms of lag. It's to the point of giving up all together. If this doesn't get fixed its going to destroy the game.

I guess on this holiday weekend, there must be an incredible amount of server lag. As far as I'm concerned, today has pretty much confirmed that firing mode misfires are at least in significant part due to server performance issues. When I queued up for swarm today, my team was rubberbanding so hard we couldn't even leave the spawn area. We couldn't get to the jem'hadar ships to repair them or the satellites. No evacuation ships exploded, but only ten escaped because of how long it took to move from one place to another even for npcs. In all this lag, I was watching my abilities go on cooldown without applying effects all the time. About four out of the five times I hit cannon scatter volley, it didn't apply the effect to my weapons. It only went on cooldown.

Obviously it's going to be worse on a holiday weekend, but the general server performance is so bad we're seeing this kind of thing in regular play fairly frequently! There is a problem with the server infrastructure and it's been getting worse with time.

Not seen this happening on my end in the UK, however, the issue is most likely with Akamai, not the server (or Cryptic). With the extra traffic, Akamai will be being their usual hyper-sensitive selves and throttling the bandwidth think it's a DDOS. You can thank Gearbox for that.

I'm in complete agreement with your theory.
