MAN, this game is hard to play sometimes. Since I came back to the game (and honestly, even before I left over a year ago), almost every time I change maps, I have to wait for ages for it to FAIL to load, then log back in, then FINALLY load into the next map. It's REALLY tiresome.
I suppose I should be glad my traits don't keep getting reset every time I zone.
This has been a problem for a VERY long time. I've posted about it several times in the bugs section, but several years have passed and it's STILL going on, so I'm posting here again to encourage everyone who is experiencing this to post in the bugs section so they can see how many people are enduring this nonsense.
Thanks to those who do.
Once, I was simply called Mojo. Now, I'm forced into a new name, but don't be fooled, I'm the original STO Mojo!
This game needs detailed crafting, exploration and interaction systems.
Sounds like a connection issue, which most likely is on your end. That is to say, outside of Cryptic's ability to address, which is probably why it hasn't been addressed in the Bug Reports subforum. Because it's not a bug.

The game stays connected for me when changing maps, even with the new internet I have. I use to be on DSL and it wouldn't boot me even then.
@colonelmarik what kind of internet connection are you using... ISP wise? Also LAN setup: modems/routers, wired or wireless? Have you ever ran an Internet Quality/Integrity Test before to see if or how often you have any packet loss? I know a dude that this happens to and for him it's his side with no possible fix due to his area. His connection is just unstable. Any type of packet loss during play would disconnect him, mostly when changing maps and or characters.
It is always easy to say that it is usually or could be on the player's side. I've tested it on two different ISPs (my two LTS account and 1 F2P account) and each time with the same result always disconnecting when changing the game map, so it can't be on the player's side. It has even been tested with a business connection that gave the same result, each time with the latest computer hardware. So one cannot help but conclude that it must be either on Cryptic's side or on the servers. But for me at least most of the problems started with the latest new content and just today a new event starts, I'm already holding my heart.

Check that "on-demand patching" is unticked in the launcher options. Hard to believe but it still defaults to ON despite not working for many years.
Yes, it is very easy to say that it must be on the player's side. When there are so many others not experiencing any issues whatsoever. Because if it was on Cryptic's side, it would effect everyone.

It doesn't seem to be a wide-spread issue, which probably why it hasn't been tracked down and resolved yet. They're going to want a traceroute(there should be a stickied thread with instructions in the bug reporting section on how to do that,) details about the system you're running, and where in the world you are (to help find where things break down along the chain between you and Cryptic.
While I do tend to have some connection issues like rubberbanding, slow loading and weapons not firing during the Anniversary Event in partiular, failure to connect when changing maps is something I hardly ever see and haven't this Event so far.

Which would be the expected result if the problem exists with either your ISP or internet routing, assuming both your LTS account and F2P account are running on the same system (or at least from the same location).
If there was anything in the game code that would cause DCs it would be pretty much everyone who'd be getting disconnected but I've not had any DC issues during this event.
Yes, it is very easy to say that it must be on the player's side. When there are so many others not experiencing any issues whatsoever. Because if it was on Cryptic's side, it would effect everyone.
And it is very easy to say that if anyone who has the same complaints that were allowed to voice on the forum under the same topic would have it over dozens of pages and make it clear that it would NOT be on the player's side, it is always easy to blame and shift the responsibility onto the back of the player(s) while they are faced with the difficulties involved in completing a mission or tfo. Not everyone takes the trouble to report this on the forum or in the support section, and not only because they do not know whether they will receive a serious response, but also because they already know in advance that they will be told that it is always on the side of the players.

if I test, with both LTS account and 1 F2P account, on two different isps as well as via a business connection and a private connection, will I move the computer hardware from address every time? No, so that assumption is wrong, although in principle it is possible. Almost identical computer hardware is present at both addresses, although one is more business-oriented than the other because it is located at my business (and in the private part there I also have a private connection to a different ISP than at my home address , and there is the identical PC as at my home address). I just get the same result as stated in topic https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1269464/disconnected-when-switching-maps-space-ground
Yeah I've been getting disconnections for a while now.
server cannot be found
Connection to server timed out
Lost server connection whilst loading
and a few other messages when changing maps.
The one that seems to have the most issues for me is the Fleet Research Lab, although it will occur on RTFO's and maybe transferring to a Bridge.
Never have the issue entering the Dyson Zone Space/Ground (Lots of rubberbanding and latency issues in the Ground BZ which is a different issue) New Romulus, DS9, ESD as example maps.
It would be interesting to have an explanation as to why I can say do New Romulus Staging Area mission without issue, then queue for a RTFO, have the game timeout/fail to connect to server during the map transfer, log back in instantly with no delays, and play say Infected Space without connectivity issues.
The connectivity issue only rears it's head transferring me off one map to another or perhaps one server to another? Maybe there is some undetected bridging connection between changing servers as the disconnections during map transfers could will be due to the request your making to the game not being received and your getting dropped because your ISP and the game stop talking to each other.
Yes, it is very easy to say that it must be on the player's side. When there are so many others not experiencing any issues whatsoever. Because if it was on Cryptic's side, it would effect everyone.
Not necessarily. As I remember, the issues with Akamai on their hosted servers did not affect everyone.
100% not all issues with affect everyone, especially since this very issue pops up two or three times a year. So either the servers have a problem that keeps happening or they keep accidentally reintroducing a bug over and over that makes so players not be able to have a steady connection. And like others have said no other game has this issue, downloading games doesn't any issues, I even turned all settings down to lowest possible and the issue still happens.
What this all really illustrates is a problem a lot of games have, and that is what I call intolerance of brief connection interruption. I rely on very spotty internet (which I can do nothing about) that has like 5 or 10 second interruptions every few minutes, and often this is enough to get me booted to the login screen, STO just NEEDS to wait longer between such connection gaps before terminating connection and requiring a person to log back in (I use steam so thankfully I don't have to type or paste my login a billion times).
I play other games that have much greater tolerance for such connection gaps and that is fine, I might rubber band or freeze in place but its better than having to log back in every couple minutes and wait to load back in! Please pass this up the chain to whoever can increase the tolerance before terminating the logged in session, this is a problem for millions of people especially in certain places of the world who have poor quality internet.
I get this often too. Almost always it's when I'm transferring into something instanced (my bridge, a fleet holding, or a mission). Anything where there are other players seems to work fine. And I double checked, and on demand patching is off.
Ok, I ran the tests suggested (thanks for the link). Here's what I got, not sure what it all means...:

Constant disconnects every session for me for about a year, always during map transfer, fleet holdings are the worst. As well as hardware issues in the past with an 8 core amd. Like 1 core freaking out with nothing in game going on, just looking at a wall. With all the testing ive done and players ive talked to who have similar problems, oddly we are all running an amd cpu and gpu. Laptop and intel players seem unaffected by alot of bugs, lag, and disconnects. I'm not positive, but suspect for some reason the game doesn't like amd machines.

If you are on PC, go into the Launcher's Options and make sure On-demand Patching is disabled for a start. This cures most map transfer issues.
I have a laptop with AMD A8, and I don't get this issue. The most common issue I get is black-screen, and that's usually 2 or 3 times a year after a patch, and that's easy to fix with safe mode.
I think a Cryptic led investigation into which ISP's folk are with would be helpful, because I can see that ISP's maybe a factor, especially if you have your anti-virus with them, could also be flagging traffic as 'DDOS', although OP's traceroute shows no issue for him. Could still be Akamai blocking when hit with a high number of requests from map transfers at the same time.
Thing is, if only a handful are being affected and even less reporting, it's kind of hard to spot on Cryptic's end. They pretty much must get network statistics, and if it's within a tolerance, it must be 'normal'. Look at the other month when a ISP issue in Ohio was causing the problem, Cryptic said where it was.

I will try turning off on demand patching. Thx for the advice. I know this game has always been notorious for disconnects, in chat, its really an inside joke at this point. I do know my other games, like from steam, don't behave this way. It's probably old code trying to run on modern hardware. Gosh when this game was written dual cores were all the rage, now we're running 8 cores. Some of my old games do act similarly janky.

I don't know if US ISP's all run unlimited Data yet or not, but the UK's all are solely unlimited nowadays (AFAIK), bar mobile companies....so on-demand patching shouldn't be necessary anymore.
This issue has dozens of possible causes, and it's easier for folk to blame the company. I cannot explain why I don't seem to have the issues others claim, but disconnects just aren't happening to me over the pond.

They're happening to me and I'm in the UK.
I think I might have spotted something interesting today though. Almost always when I get a disconnect, the number on the loading screen stays betwen 1-3. If I minimize to desktop when I see this, then wait a few seconds and return to the game, the disconnect doesn't happen.
I need to experiment a bit more to see if this is a real thing or just random cooincidence though.
Sometimes that helps for me also, @ captainkoltar, but not every time. Ya and its not my internet, or isp, or firewalls, and really so used to it over the years its become part of the norm. I did turn off auto patch last night, and the first map transfer kicked me. lol I'm gonna leave it off for a while and see if there's any difference. All I do know is every laptop user (amd or intel) and every intel user i've talked to, their game runs smoother and more consistent. Conspiracy! LOL

There's two delay (hang) points during loading, one at <40% and the other at <96%. Obviously, they must be when the client is accessing the patch server and account server. Turning on-demand off prevents it needing to access the patch server to download, except for verifying the map version you're accessing, which it does regardless. Trust me, leave it off. The advice to turn it off came years ago from Cryptic to solve it hanging.
As for CPU conspiracies, the client really doesn't seem to like driver updates. Seems like everytime a driver is updated, around the same time of a patch, the game gives me 'black screen' at loading. It's easily fixable with safe mode though. This just highlights the beauty of consoles (I've both PC and XB), they don't have millions of possible configurations to test.

I'm not suffering from disconnects, but the lag and rubberbanding has become noticably worse the last couple of days.
Even just flying away from most ships in orbit of ESD means I'll be seeing my ship making all sorts of zigzag-movements. Same in zones like the Voth space zone and the ground battlezone.
Just a few minutes ago I was trying to upgrade a ground shield while standing near Q on ESD. Even that couldn't be done without lag.
