It's not like it's even a long TFO really, mind the rifts nuke everything on the way to other rifts. Then take out the shield generators and get Killy to clear off.
Done inside 10 minutes on normal and fun too, as it keeps going. Beats Infected 75 times in a row.
What's the point of playing the game if you aren't going to play the game? Are you going to get the ship and AFK in that instead guys?
Cthulu weeps.

As much as any of us might like to... it won't solve anything.
And as much as we might like a vote kick... we all know it will be abused all to hell without the proper safeguards.
Sounds like bad luck on PUGs. Hopefully they got tagged as AFK by the system and didn't get any reward. Honestly times like that make me wish we could somehow draw enemies over to them.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

We used to have a 'share your worst PvE queue experience'-thread (or something like that).
IIRC, there was little naming and shaming there, despite it being a very long thread. People generally observed that rule well, but it still allowed them to share their experiences.
I still don't know why so many people haven't happened upon the simplest strategy for clearing Iupiter Irratus. Just post one big ship on each holoprojector, preferably a carrier or something else with good supporting vessels (I find the Jarok-class to be quite useful in this regard), and the other two can flit about between the station and any holoprojector that seems to be in trouble. The ships at the projectors need to stay in place to close rifts and keep the good guys in control. Then they announce lockdown of the holoprojectors, and it's time for everybody to close on Beta and start taking down Killy and her shield-ships.
I think the stations can be regenerated with protomater consoles, i know it increases its shields with the undine shield ability from the reputation, I know they are not solutions, but yeah, the AFKers are a problem.. i try to play private every time i can..
I've been wrongly flagged as AFK exactly once; if memory serves, I was in a Tholian Red Alert when the bloody thing completely locked up on me. By the time I was able to so much as move, it was too late.

well, one of them died fairly early on and stayed dead, so he/she/it probably got the afk penalty.

I've had players give me TRIBBLE in chat because I would do exactly that. I camped Alpha or Gamma. My GW Intrepid and the tact fliers are more than enough to keep it free. my response was, if you need help, ask but don't give me TRIBBLE
Every once in a while, such people "name and shame" themselves, by complaining about being "wrongly" hit by the AFK penalty, on the reasoning that they were not actually "AFK".
Except that they WERE falsely flagged because they didn't hit the minimum mandated metrics for the event in question.
It happens because the did less than 2% of the teams damage which is surprisingly easy to achieve. This amount can often be achieved by simply firing one's weapons just a couple of times during the course of an entire TFO.
The fact that this can happen, as in a player being thrown in with a group that is so far out of his or her league, is a sign of poor game design.
Usually players can choose their difficulty level (normal, advanced, elite). With events this isn't always possible but more often than not events are more timer based (i.e. close 15 rifts) so opportunities for players to do much in the way of damage is minimal.
And if this means that some players cannot experience an event untill they are adequately geared for it, then so be it.
It's not perfect, throwing end game players in with new players, but for the vast majority of the time it works. You can check this in-game yourself. I have.
Now on the flipside, one of the reasons why AFKers may find themselves in an event is because of the Queu system. As I understand it, the event launches as soon as the queue fills up. Depending on how long someone was waiting to get into an event, it could mean the difference between being first to start moving and firing and sitting at spawn doing nothing.
When a queue fills up you get hailed and then click to confirm. Everybody starts the queue on an equal footing as players aren't transferred into a TFO until all 5 players have confirmed they're ready.
There's an additional pause build in at the start of a TFO so all players can read the objectives, launch pets, etc.
What needs to happen is that when queuing for an event, and the line actually moves, the player waiting needs to get an alert that gives them 30 seconds to acknowledge.
This is in place but pretty sure players are given closer to a full minute to acknowledge.
This way, if someone is AFK going into an event, they willfully would have to choose to be so AFTER declaring themselves ready. Penalty applies.
Anybody that accepts a TFO by acknowledging the hail has declared themselves ready.
Personally, these multi-player events should be the actual fleet mechanics, allowing fleets, which should be about like-minded players finding each other and playing together to come together, chose the event they wish to participate in, and then engage together.
Players have the option of queuing as a team whether they're in a fleet or not. Apparently there's some that can also be be queued as a single player.
even if you accept, then go to the fridge for a coke, you still have plenty of time. there is simply NO EXCUSE for what Anne experienced. if you have to fo AFK, then sign out.
well, one of them died fairly early on and stayed dead, so he/she/it probably got the afk penalty.
At least there was some poetic justice.
Still... deliberate AFKing soemthing like that is just... IMO a form of trolling in itself as they expect others to carry them so they can reap the rewards while putting in no effort to earn it. Almost feels like they're saying "Go forth my minions, bring me back cheezburger" as if they're royalty or something and couldn't be bothered to even fire a single shot themselves.
Now I'm not saying ALL AFK behavior is that bad. There are legit reasons to AFK, such as unexpected RL stuff getting in the way, but the deliberate AFK... yea that's a problem. God I remember some of the old queues where people would just OPENLY say they're gonna AFK it, like the old Mirror Invasion or some other event queues.
I do not sign up for a run to do the work of two ships... pull your own weight if you want the shiny.

I think if the game were to tag the afkers as enemy combatants it could go a long way to target this behavior. I mean it really IS a form of trolling and who wouldn't want to shoot a troll even though here in a forum most probably wouldn't want to admit to having such feelings.
Is this sort of behavior really any different than when players fill all the Fleet marks in a project but don't contribute any energy credits, doffs, or Dilithium? They both want somebody else to pay for their cheezburger as if they're royalty and couldn't otherwise be bothered.
Now I'm not saying ALL AFK behavior is that bad.
Exactly. When 2-3 people afk a Borg ground or other advanced queue it can often result in the remaining players having more fun due to the increase in hit points and enemies available.

If I recall players correctly determined that when playing the old Mirror Invasion nothing they did really mattered... no weight to be pulled OR work to be done.
So perhaps what's happening now that Cryptic has added consequences for afking to some of these queues BUT otherwise forgot to add any meaningful gameplay to them is players are just being left confused?
Being inspired to afk but compelled to do otherwise would certainly be a strange combination.
to be fair...Cryptic has a fairly convenient solution to that problem...NO FAIL CONDITIONS. No matter what, you can't fail the mission. Takes longer, but it will eventually be a success.
Go pro or go home

Timegates to pad out playing time will cause AFK behavior. And I do not blame the players for it. Let good teams clear the TFO faster, it encourages playing as a team. Simple as that.
But metrics top actual game experience it seems.

I mean if "playing the game" is a time gate to someone then why are they playing at all?
Is jupiter even time gated? seems to me that if you promptly close the rifts down it goes MUCH faster. I don't think it's a time gate as much as you have to close X amount of gates before they get locked down

15 rifts, if the team closes that many the final phase starts no matter what. It’s only a soft time gate if you will as the rifts don’t appear all at once.

Exposing them as pathetic pre-maders.
Real warriors don't shy away from PUGs, real Starfleet officers enjoy unexplored teams!

Counterpoint: We've seen just how EASY fail conditions can be weaponized by Trolls deliberately sabotaging TFO runs.
