There's a handy one at the right-hand side of the main actionbar/powertray as well, which does the same job.
CRUD! I completely overlooked that switch on the powertray! Now I'm gonna have to go back to that stage and test it for myself to see if it works or not.

After returning to the same stage to test it out, I can confirm that the BOFFs WILL NOT SWITCH OVER (using all-caps and in bold for the devs to noticed this) when attempting to use the "hooked" toggle/switch on the Command Tray when attempting to enter the EV area of The Power Source/Secrets Of The Ancients, IF they don't have an EV suit equipped in their EV slot, so this means the "phantom EV suit" doesn't "activate" here.
Try equipping an EV suit into the Armor slot?
I seem to recall having to do that for A Step Between Stars...
I should have clarified that I removed any EV suits I did collect from the Nukara dailies from my BOFFs's EV slots as a troubleshooting method to see if they would switch over to the "phantom EV suit" on The Power Source/Secrets of the Ancients using that switch/toggle on the command tray, but to no avail.
This just goes back to my earlier point that skipping the mission and going out of the continuity of the story arcs just to obtain EV suits shouldn't be the norm here, if THIS mission was the first mission you would canonically obtain EV suits.
I've had a go at playing the mission myself and as soon as I hit the part of the mission that required me entering the lava caves, my character and bridge officer all automagically equipped their EV-suits.
I had removed any equipped EV-suits, so these were the miniaturised ones that are the default ones nowadays.
Entering the caves caused no issues for me either. I can only suggest OP tries again...

I removed the EV suits from the BOFFs's EV suit slots as troubleshooting, to see if the "phantom EV suit" will activate when entering the lava cave after I click on the looping icon on the command tray as directed (I acquired Nukara EV suits some time in between yesterday and initially skipping the mission last week). Unfortunately, the only way the BOFFs will activate EV suits is when they have one equipped in the EV suit slot, but will not use the default "phantom EV suit."
A really weird and definitely related issue I've found with this EV revamp is that Kal Dano now always wears an EV suit when you encounter him during 'Echoes of Light'. He is so far the only NPC I've run into that wears an EV suit when he shouldn't

Thank you for reminding me; I completely forgot about that one, but I definitely remember that he previously wore a custom EV suit radically different from the ones I have worn prior to the EV suit revamp.

He isn't in "Echoes of Light", but he is in Sunrise and Stormbound, wearing an EV suit inside his own ship, and to protect himself from the rain on Risa!
Something else I need to add to this issue:
TOS Fed BOFFs don't seem to switch over to their (era-appropriate) EV suits when beaming over into the Tholian ship in the mission Tangled Webs. Also, the Na'Kuhl that are present in that episode are wearing the 25th Century standard EV suits.
Strangely, the BOFFs don't seem to be taking any damage while they're inside the Tholian ship.
well) klingon recruits probably will skip those two missions for later. just tried to go Power Source and no ev suits for boffs. box that was useful b4 "ev rewamp" - "pointless action that did nothing good", no not working but still there for unknown reason~!?
and i think it will be very long time b4 they fix this, as they add a lot new stuff that needs fixing too)
well at least they finally fixed light in this place, not sure when)))) because it was still eyeblowing well past after so called "fix"

I recently started 3 characters (1 straight Fed, 1 TOS Fed, and 1 KDF-allied Rom), and I bet I will be encountering this issue with these newbies as well. I'll have no choice but to skip this mission and acquire either the Nukara EV suits via Nukara dailies (once they reach Lv 50) or go through A Step Between Stars 3 times (I tend to get 5 Solanae EV suits out of those 3 runs). The reason why I don't purchase the EV suits with dilithium is because I'd rather focus my dil on purchasing Phoenix upgrade tokens for leveling up the new characters' gear.
